Traumatic loss involves the loss of loved ones in the context of potentially traumatizing circumstances and is a commonly reported traumatic event. It may give rise to disturbed grief, called prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in ICD-11 and persistent complex bereavement disorder (PCBD) in DSM-5, combined with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. The recent inclusion of grief disorders in both DSM-5 and ICD-11 have spurred research on grief-related psychopathology. This special issue on traumatic loss includes 10 articles and two letters. Topics addressed include diagnostic criteri

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to present and synthesize recent research on grief and bereavement in people with intellectual disabilities, incorporating relevant studies with the general population.
RECENT FINDINGS: Work in the general population is currently focusing on achieving greater clarity in our understanding of typical and atypical reactions to grief. Although much of this research is relevant to people with intellectual disabilities, this group also presents unique challenges. These include variation in understanding of death, a continuum of grief reactions including

Grief is a complex and multifaceted process. While there is no reason to think that the grieving process would be dissimilar if an LGBTQ+ individual loses a partner than the grief of a heterosexual individual, they often receive and perceive less practical and emotional support, empathy and are treated unequally legally post loss. To date no studies have investigated whether this experience (disenfranchised loss) more likely leads to prolonged grief disorder or other mental health sequelae. This article describes aspects of disenfranchised grief, loneliness, and artificial intelligence for emo

The death of a child is a devastating experience for most parents. Consequently, bereaved parents are at risk to develop physical and mental health problems, including prolonged grief disorder. Nevertheless, there is a lack of evaluated psychosocial interventions for bereaved parents. The primary aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of the My Grief app for bereaved parents. The secondary aim was to evaluate the potential reduction of symptoms of prolonged grief, depression and post-traumatic stress, and cognitive-behavioral processes proposed to prolong grief reactions. The study w

BACKGROUND: Bereavement is a common and inevitable part of life. However, it is also difficult and disruptive. Prolonged grief disorder has recently been added to the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision, and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition). Grief is a deeply cultural experience; however, most research about grief and grief intervention is conducted in Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) countries. Support for grief is often limited and difficult to access. We propose that ecological momentary intervention

The loss of a significant other may shatter positive or neutral cognitions about the self, life, and the future, confirm preexisting negative cognitions in these areas, or lead to threatening misinterpretations about one's own grieving. Negative cognitions are a risk factor for the development of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Using latent trait-state occasion (TSO) modeling, the aim of this study was to examine the longitudinal structure of negative loss-related cognitions over time, and to examine the associations between time-invariant (TI; trait) and time-variant (TV; occasional) componen

Aversive mental images occur across psychological disorders. Images related to the deceased and the loss can also develop after the death of a close person and seem related to prolonged grief. The present study investigated the content and characteristics of grief-related mental images and tested hypotheses regarding their associations with prolonged grief symptoms (PGS) and negative grief cognitions. Bereaved participants (N = 261) completed an online mental images questionnaire and measures of PGS and negative grief cognitions. Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression analyses and gr

Prolonged grief disorder, characterized by severe, persistent, and disabling grief, has recently been included in the International Classification of Diseases-11 (ICD-11). Emotional disturbances are central to such complicated grief responses. Accordingly, emotion regulation is assumed critical in the development, persistence, and treatment of complicated grief. Yet, a comprehensive review on this topic is lacking. We conducted a systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42017076061) searching PsycInfo, Web of Science, and PubMed to identify quantitative research examining relationships between emotion

BACKGROUND: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a neurodegenerative disease with a sudden onset, a rapid progression, a profile of complex disabilities and fatal consequences. Caring for a person with MND is an unremitting commitment, yet little research has examined the experiences and needs of carers for palliative care and bereavement care.
AIM: This study explored the experiences of MND family carers, both during their time as carers and following bereavement. Particular attention was paid to the carers' prolonged grief status and to the implications for service delivery, including palliative

When the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) was published in 2013, there was a firestorm of controversy about the elimination of the bereavement exclusion. Proponents of this change and of the proposed "complicated grief" designation believed that this change would help clinicians recognise major depression in the context of recent bereavement. Other researchers and clinicians have raised concerns about medicalising grief. In 2022 "prolonged grief disorder" (PGD) was officially included in the DSM-5-TR in the trauma- and stressor-related disorder

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Following bereavement, a minority experiences severe, persistent, and disabling grief, termed prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Establishing individual differences in how grief develops over time can guide clinical decision-making, yet has only recently received empirical scrutiny. The present review synthesizes results from grief trajectory studies.
DESIGN: Systematic review (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42024601883).
METHOD: We included peer-reviewed, longitudinal, quantitative studies that identify grief trajectories in bereaved adults. Searches of Web of Scie

AIM: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) rarely occurs in isolation; over 80% of individuals present with comorbid conditions such as depression, anxiety, or substance use disorders. The polythetic DSM-5 structure creates substantial diagnostic heterogeneity, producing thousands of possible symptom combinations. This theoretical paper seeks to demonstrate how trauma-related symptoms transcend diagnostic categories and proposes a mechanism-based framework for improving differential diagnosis and treatment planning.
METHODS: We review symptom overlap between PTSD and major depressive disorder

This study explored how "inhibiting factors" associated with military-bereavement impact combatants' psychological sequelae following comrade loss. One hundred six eligible Israeli combat male-soldiers completed the Texas-Revised-Inventory of Grief, the post-traumatic-stress-disorder symptoms scale (PSS), the Male Role Norms Scale, the Social Acknowledgment Questionnaire, and a scale assessing Military Encouragement to Grieve (MEG-8). Time since loss had no impact on soldiers' levels of PSS or prolonged grief. Regression analysis indicated that higher masculinity-perception and disapproval fro

Grief reactions among relatives of palliative care patients are often overlooked, with most interventions targeting Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) rather than its prevention. Few interventions have been developed for individuals at risk. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Empower-Grief, a selective intervention designed to address early problematic grief reactions and to explore predictors of its effectiveness. This exploratory randomized controlled trial (RCT) compared Empower-Grief with Treatment as Usual (TAU) among relatives or caregivers of palliative and oncological patients at

BACKGROUND: Survivors of suicide loss (SLSs) represent a unique group that faces a heightened risk of developing complications related to grief, often characterized by ruminating on the reasons behind their loved one's suicide, which can affect their supportive social networks. Grief rumination is considered a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental health diseases, including prolonged grief. We evaluated the psychometric and reliability of the Iranian Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS) among SLSs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted between 2023 and 2024, investiga

Prolonged grief disorder, also known as post-loss grief, was officially recognized in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) after years of debate within the mental health community. However, while post-loss grief gained recognition, anticipatory and preparatory grief, which occur before a loss, have remained underexplored. Preparatory grief affects individuals nearing the end of life, while anticipatory grief impacts the loved ones of those who are about to die. These grief types are particularly prevalent among women, who are more vulnerable to their emotional and psychologica

OBJECTIVE: The Lebanese people have endured through several disasters, such as the Beirut explosion, coronavirus pandemic, and cholera outbreak. However, volunteers who have tried to overcome such national disasters develop emotional stress after witnessing people's death. This study was conducted to explore whether volunteers' depression or anxiety mediates the relationship between grief response and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.
METHODS: We conducted an anonymous online survey study and collected responses from 270 volunteers in Lebanon from March 20-26, 2023. Demographic

Grief rumination, characterised by repetitive thinking about the loss and its causes and consequences, is linked to various psychopathological symptoms, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Traditional assessments of grief rumination rely on trait self-report questionnaires assessing multiple types of rumination (e.g., reactions, injustice, counterfactuals and meaning), which may be susceptible to memory biases and often fail to capture the dynamic and context-dependent nature of ruminative thoughts. This brief report evaluates the ecological validity of trait versus state grief ruminatio

OBJECTIVES: Psychological consequences of grief among relatives are insufficiently known. We reported incidence of prolonged grief among relatives of deceased patients with cancer.
METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 611 relatives of 531 patients with cancer hospitalized for more than 72 hours and who died in 26 palliative care units was conducted. The primary outcome was prolonged grief in relatives 6 months after patient death, measured with the Inventory Complicated Grief (ICG > 25, range 0-76, a higher score indicates more severe symptoms) score. Secondary outcomes in relatives 6 months

Refugees often experience traumatic events and the loss of loved ones, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (cPTSD) and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). It has been repeatedly shown that comorbidity between PGD and PTSD is frequent especially after violent losses, but only few studies have investigated the relationship between PGD and cPTSD. The network approach to psychopathology is well suited to investigate associations between different symptoms. We therefore combined a traditional investigation of the probable prevalence of PGD and its comorbidity with PTSD and cP
