Objective: To describe the surgical technique and early clinical outcomes of prone-transpsoas single-position corpectomy (PTP-corpectomy) for the management of complex thoracolumbar spinal pathology. Background: PTP-corpectomy is an emerging technique for providing simultaneous lateral and posterior spinal access without patient repositioning. The previous literature describes the PTP approach for interbody fusions; however, evaluation of its use for corpectomy is limited. This case series reports our experience with the PTP-corpectomy procedure at our institution. Methods: We retrospectively

Esophageal pressure (PES), used as a substitute for pleural pressure in calculations of respiratory mechanics, are complex and influenced by several factors. High-resolution manometry (HRM) provides pressure readings over the esophageal length, which makes it possible to identify factors other than respiratory mechanics that influence esophageal pressure. The aim of this study was to describe and explore esophageal pressure in prone and supine position at different ventilatory settings. PES was measured using HRM in 20 mechanically ventilated patients before start of spinal surgery. PEEP of 5

BACKGROUND: Kidney biopsy is the gold standard diagnostic technique for nephrologists. Appropriate patient positioning facilitates physiological stability and access to target anatomy. Factors such as patient weight, size and medical history, including respiratory or circulatory disorders, should guide position selection. However, most kidney biopsies are performed exclusively in the prone position and procedures are often deferred when this is not feasible. Although lateral kidney biopsy has been reported, it remains uncommon and its applications are not well established. We aimed to demonstr

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is defined in critically ill patients with acute hypoxemia and positive-pressure ventilation in association with several clinical disorders including trauma, pneumonia, sepsis, and aspiration. The prone position has been used for many years and is now recommended for patients with severe or moderate-to-severe ARDS on invasive mechanical ventilation. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in patients with ARDS, with up to a 35% incidence rate. Initiation of Kidney Replacement Therapy (KRT) requires wise clinical judgment and c

INTRODUCTION: Calcaneus is one of the most commonly fractured tarsal bones. The use of computed tomography (CT) has enabled more accurate fracture configuration and classification of fractures. The outcomes of operative versus nonoperative treatment of these fractures have been extensively debated with variable results. Significant complications following intra-articular fractures have been reported in the literature despite management by experienced surgeons. This article will discuss the treatment of calcaneus fractures by open reduction and internal fixation in a prone position with a calca

Intraoperative cardiac arrest is one of the most feared events by anesthesiologists and surgeons. Although there are many possible causes, three differential diagnoses stand out in the presented scenario: pulmonary embolism, gas embolism, and acute myocardial infarction. A 61-year-old female patient was admitted in the hospital to C2-C5 arthrodesis. Despite no major bleeding during surgery, immediately after supination the patient developed refractory hypotension, a decrease in end tidal CO2, progressive bradycardia that ultimately led to pulseless electrical activity. Resuscitation maneuvers

OBJECTIVE: Single-position surgery in prone position is a novel technique for lateral interbody fusion with pedicle screw fixation. We performed a radiographic comparison of patients treated for spondylolisthesis using the prone lateral (PL) transpsoas approach versus the traditional dual position (DP) approach (lateral decubitus then prone).
METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients with spondylolisthesis were treated using the PL approach (n = 15) versus the dual position approach (n = 15). Radiographic factors in the groups were retrospectively compared.
RESULTS: The groups were similar for ag

OBJECTIVE: The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19 outbreak) demands an increased need for hospitalizations in emergency departments (EDs) and critical care units. Owing to refractory hypoxemia, prone position ventilation has been used more frequently and patients will need repeated hemodynamic assessments. Our main objective was to show the feasibility of obtaining images to measure multiple parameters with transthoracic echocardiography during the prone position ventilation.
METHODS: We enrolled 15 consecutive mechanically ventilated patients with confirmed severe acute respiratory s

BACKGROUND: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, prone position (PP) has been frequently used in the intensive care units to improve the prognosis in patients with respiratory distress. However, turning patients to prone imply important complications such as pressure ulcers. The aim of this paper is to describe the prevalence and characteristics of prone-positioning pressure sores (PPPS) and analyze the related risk factors.
METHODS: A case-control study was performed in Gregorio Maranon hospital in Madrid during the COVID-19 pandemic between April and May 2020. We enrolled 74 confirmed C

PURPOSE: In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), lymph nodes (LNs) around the subcarina and main bronchi are thought to be highly involved. Therefore, complete dissection of these LNs with preservation of the pulmonary branches of the vagus nerves, which control important pulmonary functions, is recommended. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the feasibility of reliable method for lymphadenectomy around the subcarina and main bronchi, named the medial approach, during thoracoscopic esophagectomy in the prone position (TEP).

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopic oesophageal mobilisation during a minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIE) is most commonly performed with the patient placed in the lateral decubitus position (LDP). The prone position (PP) for thoracoscopic oesophageal mobilisation has been proposed as an alternative.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, comparative study designed to compare early outcomes following a minimally invasive thoracolaparoscopic oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer in LDP and in PP.
RESULTS: During the study period, between January 2011 and February 2014, 104 patients underw

BACKGROUND: An open esophagectomy for esophageal cancer is a severely invasive procedure. Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) has emerged as an effective alternative to open techniques. Conventionally, a thoracoscopic procedure is performed either in the left lateral decubitus position or in the prone position. Both positions have their disadvantage during the mobilization of the esophagus. In this study, we applied a novel position: the left lateral-prone position in the throacoscopic phase of MIE; we also describe the details of the technique and its feasibility, and present the initial r

AIMS: this review explored the evidence relating to prone positioning in ventilated patients diagnosed with respiratory failure, including acute lung injury (ALI) or adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
BACKGROUND: mortality rates for ventilated patients with ALI or ARDS are high, and there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the position these patients are nursed in may influence clinical outcomes. However, there are no guidelines to inform nursing practice in positioning these patients.
METHOD: Medline, Scopus, Cinahl and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for or

BACKGROUND: Reports on video-assisted pneumonectomy have remained scarce, despite early demonstration of its technical feasibility. A totally videothoracoscopic pneumonectomy was first reported by Conlan and Sandor. The patient in this report was positioned in the full lateral position. In this video, we report a totally videothoracoscopic left-side pneumonectomy with the patient in prone position.
METHODS: A 49-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for a bifocal cancer of the left lower lung lobe (LLL) and the cervical esophagus. The preoperative workup included a chest computed tomograp
