Clinical infectious diseases : an official publication of the Infectious Diseases Society of America2024eng
BACKGROUND: Information on infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Cutibacterium spp. is limited and new Duke-International Society for Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases (ISCVID) criteria have not yet been properly assessed. We examined clinical characteristics, outcomes, and performance of diagnostic tests for Cutibacterium valvular and cardiac implantable electronic device-related IE (CIED-IE).
METHODS: Data corresponding to all episodes of Cutibacterium IE recorded from 2008 to 2023 in a prospective national cohort including 46 Spanish hospitals were examined. Possible IE cases were reasses

Acne vulgaris is a prevalent skin condition among adolescents, primarily instigated by over-colonization and subsequent inflammation triggered by Cutibacterium acnes. Although topical and oral antibiotics are standard treatments, they often lead to the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and are associated with undesirable side effects. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered a promising solution to these challenges. In this study, we aimed to develop novel short AMPs to combat C. acnes. By comparing sequences and abstracting the distribution of residue types of established AMP

The probiotic activity of skin Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) bacteria can elicit diverse biological functions via the fermentation of various carbon sources. Here, we found that polyethylene glycol (PEG)-8 Laurate, a carbon-rich molecule, can selectively induce the fermentation of S. epidermidis, not Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), a bacterium associated with acne vulgaris. The PEG-8 Laurate fermentation of S. epidermidis remarkably diminished the growth of C. acnes and the C. acnes-induced production of pro-inflammatory macrophage-inflammatory protein 2 (MIP-2) cytokines in mice

Oral tetracyclines are the most widely prescribed systemic antibiotic for acne. Synthesis of efficacy and safety of traditional and novel oral tetracyclines is highly informative to clinical practice. We conducted a systematic search of PubMed to identify large interventional and observational studies utilizing oral tetracyclines as an acne treatment. We identified 13 articles meeting inclusion for this review, which represented 226,019 pediatric and adult acne patients. Oral tetracyclines that were included in this systematic review were sarecycline (a novel narrow-spectrum tetracycline), dox

CASE: A 32-year-old man developed lumbar discitis and osteomyelitis after receiving a cell-based injection for the treatment of degenerative disc disease. Initial cultures were negative, but he continued to worsen, and a repeat set of cultures was taken. On day 10, Cutibacterium acnes was isolated. He was then successfully treated with 12 weeks of intravenous antibiotics.
CONCLUSIONS: There is minimal regulation on the preparation or administration of cell-based interventions. It is important to consider slow growing organisms such as C. acnes in patients presenting with spinal infection with

The combination of sophorolipids and copaiba essential oil in a multifunctional facial formulation aimed at the treatment of conditions such as acne and herpetic folliculitis was evaluated. Sophorolipids produced by Starmerella bombicola reached 38.37 g/l, predominantly in the lactonic form. Their antimicrobial activity, alone and combined with copaiba oil, was evaluated against Cutibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The combination reduced the minimum inhibitory concentration against C. acnes from 62.50 to 31.25 μg/ml, demonstrating an additive effect. Ant

STUDY DESIGN: An animal laboratory study.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the pathogenicity and survival of Cutibacterium acnes ( C. acnes ) in rat intervertebral discs (IVD) across different time periods.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Since C. acnes was proposed as a potential causative agent of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), it has been the subject of widespread controversy. This study examined the removal of C. acnes from IVD, supporting the theory of its role in IDD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty rats were randomly assigned to a control group or groups with different C.

BACKGROUND: Cutibacterium acnes is the most common pathogen in shoulder periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) but remains difficult to distinguish from contamination due to its low virulence and presence as a skin commensal. Diagnostic ambiguity and variable antibiotic resistance further complicate management.
METHODS: We analyzed 87 C acnes isolates from patients undergoing evaluation for shoulder PJI across 2 institutions. Isolates were obtained from intraoperative cultures and stored for subsequent analysis. Hemolysis, aerotolerance, and growth rate were assessed in vitro. Antimicrobial sus

OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in skin bacteria is a salient issue in patients with acne vulgaris. This study aimed to investigate the AMR status of skin bacteria isolated from university student volunteers with no history of treating acne.
METHODS: We evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Cutibacterium acnes, isolated in 2014 and 2019 from volunteers, and identified macrolide-clindamycin-resistance determinants. C. acnes genotyping was performed by using single-locus sequence typing. These isolates were compared with isolates obtained from pa

UNLABELLED: Cutibacterium acnes is a major skin commensal that may act as an opportunistic pathogen. It is difficult to interpret findings of C. acnes in tissue cultures obtained during arthroplasty revision surgery, since they may represent true infection or contamination. This study investigated whether C. acnes obtained from prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) were related and shared common genomic traits that might correlate with clinical courses and patient outcomes. C. acnes isolates from revision surgery of patients with PJIs of the hip, shoulder, and knee were characterized using molecu

BACKGROUND: Cutibacterium are the most common cause of periprosthetic shoulder infections, as defined by ≥2 deep cultures. Established Cutibacterium periprosthetic infections cannot be resolved without prosthesis removal. However, the decision for implant removal must be made from an assessment of infection risk before the results of intraoperative cultures are finalized. We hypothesized that the risk for a Cutibacterium infection is associated with characteristics that are available at the time of revision arthroplasty.
METHODS: In a retrospective review of 342 patients having prosthetic rev

Acne vulgaris is a chronic, inflammatory, skin condition that involves the pilosebaceous follicles and is influenced by a variety of factors including genetics, androgen-stimulation of sebaceous glands with abnormal keratinization, colonization with Cutibacterium acnes (previously called Propionibacterium acnes), and pathological immune response to inflammation. Acne can occur at all ages and this discussion focuses on the first three decades of life. Conditions that are part of the differential diagnosis and/or are co-morbid with acne vulgaris are also considered. Acne in the first year of li

Commensal and pathogenic bacteria have evolved efficient enzymatic pathways to feed on host carbohydrates, including protein-linked glycans. Most proteins of the human innate and adaptive immune system are glycoproteins where the glycan is critical for structural and functional integrity. Besides enabling nutrition, the degradation of host N-glycans serves as a means for bacteria to modulate the host's immune system by for instance removing N-glycans on immunoglobulin G. The commensal bacterium Cutibacterium acnes is a gram-positive natural bacterial species of the human skin microbiota. Under

Sarecycline is the first narrow-spectrum tetracycline-class antibiotic being developed for acne treatment. In addition to exhibiting activity against important skin/soft tissue pathogens, sarecycline exhibits targeted antibacterial activity against clinical isolates of Cutibacterium acnes In the current study, sarecycline was 16- to 32-fold less active than broad-spectrum tetracyclines-such as minocycline and doxycycline-against aerobic Gram-negative bacilli associated with the normal human intestinal microbiome. Also, reduced activity against Escherichia coli was observed in vivo in a murine

Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) ATCC 12228 was incubated with 2% polyethylene glycol (PEG)-8 Laurate to yield electricity which was measured by a voltage difference between electrodes. Production of electron was validated by a Ferrozine assay. The anti-Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) activity of electrogenic S. epidermidis was assessed in vitro and in vivo. The voltage change (~ 4.4 mV) reached a peak 60 min after pipetting S. epidermidis plus 2% PEG-8 Laurate onto anodes. The electricity produced by S. epidermidis caused significant growth attenuation and cell lysis of C. acnes. In
