Photoallergic contact dermatitis caused by ultraviolet filters in different sunscreens.

Over the last decade, a change in the public awareness regarding the possible danger of excessive sunlight exposure has resulted in an increased consumption of sunscreens. These products contain a broad spectrum of putative sensitizers that can cause contact dermatitis and, upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, photocontact dermatitis. Among these sensitizing compounds, UV filters are the most frequent cause of photoallergic reactions. Although rarely observed, we here describe the occurrence of a photoallergic contact dermatitis in a 55-year-old man after the use of two different sun

[Mycotic lesions in the brain in chronic opium-ephedrone addiction].

Histological examination of the brain of a opium-ephedrone addict has detected large spherical cells resembling Coccidioides or Paracoccidioides spherules. Roundish and oval structures were found in subependymal space of the fourth ventricle. These structures may be spores of many fungi. Areas of normal structure and these with productive inflammation were observed in the surrounding nervous tissue.

[Electrophysiologic effects of propafenone in subjects with pre-existing excito-conduction disorders].

Few data are currently available regarding the electrophysiological effects of Propafenon administration in patients with pre-existing excito-conduction system disturbances. We have performed electrophysiological evaluation in 18 patients (15 males and 3 females, mean age 61 +/- 9 years - 4 patients with sinus bradycardia, 5 pts with AVN block, 4 patients with bundle branch block and normal HV and 5 patients with bundle branch block and prolonged HV) before and after intravenous administration of Propafenon (1 mg/Kg B.W. in 5 minutes). Propafenone administration decreased the heart rate, signi

Species differences in the in vitro metabolic reduction of the amphetamine metabolite, 1-phenyl-2-propanone.

Marked differences were observed, in the ability of fortified 9000 g liver homogenate supernatants from three species to reduce 1-phenyl-2-propanone to the corresponding alcohol. This metabolic keto-reduction was negligible in homogenates from the rat and extensive in the rabbit; guinea-pig liver homogenates had intermediate ability. Metabolic oxidation of 1-phenyl-2-propanol was negligible in all three species. The amount of deamination of amphetamine and of N-n-propylamphetamine was approximately equal, in vitro, in rats and guinea-pigs but two to three times greater in liver homogenates fro

Interactions of hop xanthohumols with model membranes and their toxicity to cancer and erythrocytes cells.

Prenylated hydroxychalcones (xanthohumols) are hop-derived flavonoids with promising anticancer activity; however, their membrane interactions and structure-activity relationships remain incompletely understood. Here, xanthohumol C (XHC) and its semi-synthetic derivatives, 1″,2″-dihydroxanthohumol C (DHXHC) and 1″,2″-dihydroxanthohumol K (DHXHK), were evaluated for cytotoxic, pro-apoptotic, and membrane-modulating effects in comparison with xanthohumol (XH). In vitro antiproliferative activity against eleven human and one murine cancer cell lines yielded IC50 values in the micromolar range, wi

Impaired delay discounting and time sensitivity in methcathinone use disorder.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is characterized by continued drug use despite adverse consequences. Methcathinone is a new type of psychoactive substance that is associated with high excitement and impulsive behaviors. However, it is unclear if individuals with methcathinone use disorders (MCUD) are with impaired decision-making ability. We analyzed the task performance in 45 male MCUD subjects and 35 male matched healthy controls (HC) with intertemporal decision-making task. Constant sensitivity discounting model was used to estimate potential changes in both discounting rate and time sensitivi

Methylenedioxymethamphetamine-like discriminative stimulus effects of seven cathinones in rats.

Synthetic cathinone derivatives are commonly considered quasi-legal alternatives for stimulant drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, but some derivatives are increasingly being detected in club drug formulations of Ecstasy or 'Molly' as substitutes for methylenedioxymethamphetamine (±-MDMA). Although several studies have evaluated the psychostimulant-like effects of synthetic cathinones, few cathinone compounds have been assessed for MDMA-like activity. In order to determine their likelihood of interchangeability with entactogenic club drugs, the discriminative stimulus effects of methca

Kinetics of methaemoglobin production. (1). Kinetics of methaemoglobinaemia induced by the cyanide antidotes, p-aminopropiophenone, p-hydroxyaminopropiophenone or p-dimethylaminophenol after intravenous administration.

Methaemoglobin profiles have been studied by using ISIS, a simulation package, and NONLIN, a non-linear least-squares analysis regression program. A simple kinetic model which satisfactorily describes methaemoglobin profiles after p-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) administration and 4-dimethylaminophenol (DMAP) administration has been developed. The two compounds differed mainly in their effective rates of elimination. The model less satisfactorily described methaemoglobin profiles after p-hydroxyaminopropiophenone (PHAPP) administration.

A Fatal Case Involving Chronic Intravenous Use of Homemade Methcathinone Derived from Pseudoephedrine Tablets: Post-Mortem Concentrations, Health Risk, and Medicolegal Aspect.

Intravenous use of methcathinone synthesized at home from over-the-counter medications containing pseudoephedrine or ephedrine poses significant health risks, including neurotoxicity, severe infections, and, in some cases, fatal outcomes. This study explores the public health implications of this hazardous practice. Post-mortem femoral blood and vitreous humor samples were analyzed using UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS. The method enabled differentiation of ephedrine (a metabolite of methcathinone in this context) from pseudoephedrine (a precursor), along with the identification of relevant metabolites. A lit

In vitro photoprotective efficacy and photostability of synthesized star-shaped ZnO nanoaggregates associated with ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane.

The heightened susceptibility to skin cancer correlates with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can induce various cutaneous injuries. Inorganic UV filters, like zinc oxide (ZnO), are extensively utilized in sunscreens owing to their capacity to scatter and reflect UV radiation. The efficacy of inorganic UV filters can be augmented across a wider spectrum through synergistic combinations with other active compounds, such as organic UV filters. In this study, we synthesized and evaluated the in vitro effectiveness of star-shaped ZnO nanoaggregates. The samples were obtained employing

Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of NVP-1203 and aceclofenac in patients with acute low back pain and muscle spasm: A randomized, double-blind, active-controlled, parallel, multicenter, phase 3 clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Acute low back pain (LBP) is a common condition that can be chronic if not properly treated. Aceclofenac and eperisone hydrochloride are commonly prescribed drugs for acute LBP and muscle spasms. Therefore, NVP-1203, a fixed-dose combination of 100 mg aceclofenac and 75 mg eperisone hydrochloride, is being developed. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NVP-1203 compared to those of a single administration of 100 mg aceclofenac in patients with acute LBP and muscle spasms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Overall, 455 patients with acute LBP and muscle spasms were enrolled.

Lack of effect of the antidepressant compound bupropion on pineal indoleamines.

The effects of the antidepressant compound bupropion were studied on rat pineal indoleamines. A pharmacologically relevant dose of bupropion either acutely (20 mg/kg) or chronically (20 mg/kg/day for 12 days) had no significant effect on pineal melatonin synthesis or other pineal indoleamine concentrations. The significance of this finding is discussed in relation to the lack of effect of bupropion on beta-adrenergic receptors.

Anorectic and behavioural effects of bupropion.

1. Bupropion (12.5-75 mg kg-1) was given intraperitoneally to rats and was found to decrease the food consumption of the animals dose-dependently. While phenoxybenzamine, propranolol and methergoline failed to antagonize the anorectic effect of the drug; pimozide a dopamine receptor blocker decreased anorexia induced by bupropion. 2. Bupropion (12.5-50 mg kg-1) also caused a marked increase in locomotor activity of the rats. The increase in locomotion produced by bupropion was completely antagonized by pretreatment of the animals with pimozide and reserpine plus a-methyl-p-tyrosine, but not by
