Effectiveness of Low-Frequency Stimulation in Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Techniques for Post Ankle Sprain Balance and Proprioception in Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Stretching is an important part of post ankle sprain rehabilitation, as well as an effective exercise for improving general ankle-joint performance. But the combination of stretching alongside low-frequency stimulation has not yet been extensively studied. Therefore, the purpose of the present randomized controlled trial was to compare the combined effects of low-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) with proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) on strength, balance, and proprioception among individuals with post ankle sprain. Sixty male subjects with lateral ankl

Current status and challenges in lumbar proprioception measurement: a narrative review.

Lumbar proprioception is the cornerstone for maintaining dynamic spinal stability, postural control, and central sensorimotor regulation. Clinically, proprioceptive deficits are closely tied to the occurrence and recurrence of degenerative lumbar diseases and chronic non-specific low back pain (CLBP). Despite its clinical relevance, objectively and accurately quantifying this metric remains highly controversial methodologically. This review provides a structured overview comparing existing evaluation tools, mapping their technical characteristics and clinical feasibility. To ensure a comprehen

Cervical spinal cord stimulation disrupts proprioception yet improves voluntary arm reaching.

Whether proprioception is necessary for upper-limb motor control has been debated for decades. Classic studies in deafferented animals and humans suggested that proprioception may be dispensable for rapid, goal-directed movements. However, chronic sensory loss conflates the absence of proprioceptive input with years of compensatory adaptation. As a result, the field has lacked a strong causal test of proprioception's contribution to motor control. Here, we leveraged a clinical trial of cervical spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis to study if electr

Knee proprioception in children with spastic cerebral palsy: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Proprioception, the sense of body position and movement, is vital for motor control but has been sparsely explored in children with cerebral palsy (CP), particularly in the lower extremities. This study explored proprioception as the capacity to reproduce and maintain a knee flexion angle in children with CP. METHODS: Fifty-seven children aged 6-18 years with spastic CP; 20 unilateral (USCP), and 37 bilateral (BSCP), at Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) I-IV, and 42 typically developing (TD) children participated. Three-dimensional motion analysis was used to capt

A neural geometry for forelimb proprioception in the cervical spinal cord.

Precise, real-time somatosensory feedback is essential for coordinated movement. While the anatomy and physiology of these sensory pathways is well described, their neural code and its construction remains unclear. Here we show that neurons in the cervical spinal cord generate a precise neural representation of the forelimb's kinematic state using muscle and tendon sensory afferent inputs. We identify two classes of movement responsive neurons - the first encodes speed, position and direction of the limb, while the second exhibits precise firing at specific limb positions or grid-like firing p

A Dynamic Submaximal Fatigue Protocol Alters Wrist Biomechanical Properties and Proprioception.

Fatigue is a temporary condition that arises as a result of intense and/or prolonged use of muscles and can affect skilled human performance. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of these effects is a topic of crucial interest in both ergonomics and clinical settings. This study introduced a novel protocol, based on robotic techniques, to quantitatively assess the effects of fatigue on the human wrist joint. A wrist manipulandum was used for two concurrent purposes: (1) implementing the fatigue task and (2) assessing the functional changes both before and at four time points after the end of t

Proprioception-based movement goals support imitation and are disrupted in apraxia.

The ability to imitate observed actions serves as an efficient method for learning novel movements and is specifically impaired (without concomitant gross motor impairments) in the neurological disorder of limb apraxia, a disorder common after left hemisphere stroke. Research with apraxic patients has advanced our understanding of how people imitate. However, the role of proprioception in imitation has been rarely assessed directly. Prior work has proposed that proprioceptively sensed body position is transformed into a visual format, supporting the attainment of a desired imitation goal repre

Ankle proprioception during gait in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury.

INTRODUCTION: Proprioception is known to be affected after a spinal cord injury (SCI). However, it is currently assessed during simple tasks that do not reflect activities of daily living. To better understand how proprioception affects movement, assessing it during a functional sensorimotor task such as walking is therefore of primary importance. Therefore, the objectives of this study were as follows: (a) measure the protocol reliability of a new robotic test in nondisabled controls; (b) evaluate the effect nonlesion-related factors such as sex, age, pain, and gait speed on ankle propriocept

Proprioception of the knee before and after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine, first, if there is measurable deficit in proprioception in an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-deficient knee, either compared to the contralateral knee or external controls; second, if this deficit, if present, improves after ACL reconstruction; and third, if improvement occurs, what the time course of improvement is. TYPE OF STUDY: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Patients undergoing ACL reconstruction at the University of Chicago, demonstrating a full and painless range of motion and no other knee ligament injury or history of previou

"Motor" impairment in Asperger syndrome: evidence for a deficit in proprioception.

Motor impairment has frequently been described in Asperger syndrome (AS), a pervasive developmental disorder included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM-IV). Previous research focusing on this motor dysfunction has yielded inconsistent results, and the "clumsiness" observed clinically remains poorly defined. To clarify further the issue of motor impairment, we compared a group of 10 children and young adults who met DSM-IV criteria for AS with a control group with no neurological impairment. Subjects were matched on age, sex, socioeconomic status, an

Ankle taping improves proprioception before and after exercise in young men.

Ankle sprains are common sports injuries. Inadequate foot position awareness is thought to be the fundamental cause of these injuries. Ankle taping may decrease risk of injury through improving foot position awareness. The benefit of taping is thought to decrease with duration of exercise because of poor tape adherence to human skin. This study was a randomized, crossover, controlled comparison experiment that tested the hypothesis that ankle taping improves foot position awareness before and after exercise. A sample of 24 healthy young blindfolded volunteers, wearing their own athletic shoes,

Proprioceptive cortical neurons implement optimal state estimation.

While the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is known to be essential for skilled limb movements, it remains unclear how distinct functional ensembles within its network uniquely contribute to motor control. By isolating a stable population of proprioceptive S1 neurons in layer 2/3, we demonstrate how their selective removal impacts goal-directed reaching. We found that following their microablation, global reach kinematics remained stable, yet natural movement variability was reorganized. Trajectories became more spatially dispersed while simultaneously becoming more geometrically stereotyped.

A Novel Wrist Device for Characterizing the Components of Proprioceptive Acuity.

Proprioception is important in human motor control but can be impaired by neurological disease. Unfortunately, our understanding of proprioceptive deficit is very limited, especially for important joints such as the wrist. To address this gap, we have constructed a robotic testbed designed to measure different aspects of proprioceptive acuity at the human wrist during pronation/supination. Utilizing the testbed, we conducted a battery of psychometric tests with N = 11 neurologically-intact individuals to validate the robot's ability to quantify position, velocity, and torque sensing capabiliti

The Effects of Zinc on Proprioceptive Sensory Function and Nerve Conduction.

Zinc (Zn2+) is an essential element that can promote proper organ function, cell growth, and immune response; it can also, however, be present in too great a quantity. Zinc toxicity caused by overexposure may result in both minor and major physiological effects, with chronic exposure at low levels and acute exposure at high levels being harmful or even toxic. This investigation examines the effects of acute exposure to relatively high concentrations of Zn2+ on sensory nerve function and nerve conduction. A proprioceptive nerve in marine crab (Callinectes sapidus) limbs was used as a model to a

Piezo2 expressed in proprioceptive neurons is essential for skeletal integrity.

In humans, mutations in the PIEZO2 gene, which encodes for a mechanosensitive ion channel, were found to result in skeletal abnormalities including scoliosis and hip dysplasia. Here, we show in mice that loss of Piezo2 expression in the proprioceptive system recapitulates several human skeletal abnormalities. While loss of Piezo2 in chondrogenic or osteogenic lineages does not lead to human-like skeletal abnormalities, its loss in proprioceptive neurons leads to spine malalignment and hip dysplasia. To validate the non-autonomous role of proprioception in hip joint morphogenesis, we studied th

Dicer maintains the identity and function of proprioceptive sensory neurons.

Neuronal cell identity is established during development and must be maintained throughout an animal's life (Fishell G, Heintz N. Neuron 80: 602-612, 2013). Transcription factors critical for establishing neuronal identity can be required for maintaining it (Deneris ES, Hobert O. Nat Neurosci 17: 899-907, 2014). Posttranscriptional regulation also plays an important role in neuronal differentiation (Bian S, Sun T. Mol Neurobiol 44: 359-373, 2011), but its role in maintaining cell identity is less established. To better understand how posttranscriptional regulation might contribute to cell iden

Neglect and extinction in kinesthesia and thesesthesia: understanding proprioceptive inattention.

This paper describes a new observation of neglect and extinction of kinesthesia and thesesthesia (movement and position imperception), jointly reflecting proprioceptive inattention, in a series of patients with parietal lesions. A prototypical case is discussed in detail and unaddressed aspects of proprioceptive inattention are discussed through findings from four additional cases. Thesesthetic and kinesthetic extinction were tested through simultaneous antidromic vertical displacement of index fingers, while having patients report on finger proprioceptive perception with eyes closed.
