Risk and protective factors for post-thrombotic syndrome after deep venous thrombosis.

OBJECTIVE: The most frequent complication of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). We recently showed inhibition of varicose vein development by atorvastatin and rosuvastatin. The aim of this study was to test the influence of lipid-lowering therapy with statins on PTS development. METHODS: All patients between January 2002 and June 2018 with diagnosed DVT were enrolled in this study and analyzed retrospectively. Documentation was performed using the standardized system M1 (CompuGroup Medical, Koblenz, Germany) throughout the observation period. Patients received the

Psychological well-being in Iraq and Afghanistan veterans: Risk and protective factors.

OBJECTIVE: Much research on military veterans has focused on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other negative outcomes, with few studies of positive outcomes. This study focused on psychological well-being (PWB) in relation to PTSD symptoms and the additional risk factors of sleep problems and depression, as well as a protective factor, self-regulation. METHOD: Two hundred thirty-eight student veterans completed questionnaires online, with 115 completing follow-up questionnaires 2 months later. RESULTS: Path analyses revealed significant associations of PWB with depression and self-re

Risk and protective factors for the occurrence of sporadic pancreatic endocrine neoplasms.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PNENs) represent 10% of all pancreatic tumors by prevalence. Their incidence has reportedly increased over recent decades in parallel with that of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. PNENs are relatively rare, and of the few institutions that have published potential risk factors, findings have been heterogeneous. Our objective was to investigate the association between potential risk and protective factors for the occurrence of sporadic PNENs across a European population from several institutions. A multinational European case-control study was conducted to examine

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Review of Known Environmental Protective and Risk Factors Involved.

Inflammatory bowel diseases consisting of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In addition to genetic susceptibility and disturbances of the microbiome, environmental exposures forming the exposome play an important role. Starting at birth, the cumulative effect of different environmental exposures combined with a predetermined genetic susceptibility is thought to cause inflammatory bowel disease. All these environmental factors are part of a Western lifestyle, suiting the high incidence rates in Europe and the United States. W

Risk and protective factors for antepartum and postpartum depression: a prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Antepartum risk and protective factors for postpartum depression (PPD; the most common mental disorder after childbirth besides postpartum anxiety), have been frequently investigated in cross-sectional studies, but less often longitudinally. This study examined linear and moderator effects of risk and protective factors for peripartum depression. First, we investigated the predictive power of risk factors (physical problems during pregnancy, pregnancy-related anxiety, stressful life events, dysfunctional self-consciousness (DSC)) and protective factors (resilience, social support

Maternal and family factors and child eating pathology: risk and protective relationships.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found associations between maternal and family factors and child eating disorder symptoms. However, it is not clear whether family factors predict eating disorder symptoms specifically, or relate to more general child psychopathology, of which eating disorder symptoms may be one component. This study aimed to identify maternal and family factors that may predict increases or decreases in child eating disorder symptoms over time, accounting for children's body mass index z-scores and levels of general psychological distress. METHODS: Participants were 221 moth

Risk and protective factors for major complications after pneumonectomy for lung cancer.

Pneumonectomy carries a high-risk for postoperative complications. The aim of the study was to identify factors that may predispose to the development of major postoperative complications after pneumonectomy for lung cancer. All consecutive patients from January 2000 to December 2005 were retrospectively studied. Major postoperative complications were defined by respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, shock, cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, myocardial ischaemia or symptomatic cardiac arrhythmia. One hundred and twenty-nine patients were included. The overall hospital mortality rate wa

Shared risk and protective factors for overweight and disordered eating in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Weight-related problems, including obesity, eating disorders, and disordered eating, are major public health problems in adolescents. The identification of shared risk and protective factors for these problems can guide the development of relevant interventions to a broad spectrum of weight-related problems. This paper examines the prevalence and co-occurrence of overweight, binge eating, and extreme weight-control behaviors (vomiting, diet pills, laxatives, and diuretics) in adolescents and identifies shared risk and protective factors from within the socioenvironmental, personal,

Parent-reported problems in 211 adopted children: some risk and protective factors.

Parents of 211 adopted children, now young adults, were interviewed about their children's behaviour and development during childhood and adolescence. The children were placed for adoption at different ages. The quality of children's pre-placement care also varied, older-placed children generally experiencing adverse backgrounds prior to joining their adoptive parents. Depending on their quality of pre-placement care, the children were placed in one of three groups for the purposes of analysis: (a) baby adoptions, (b) older-children adoptions in which children had enjoyed satisfactory care as

Contextual protective factors for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs): potential avenues for intervention.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are both prevalent and harmful throughout the lifespan. More recently, researchers have begun to explore the potential mitigating or moderating effects of protective factors, mainly by examining Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs). However, the protective factors explored have largely focused on positive experiences in childhood or aspects of the individual or their family that might buffer ACEs, ignoring the larger contextual settings in which individuals develop over time. This study examined if contextual protective factors such as sense of community

Religiosity and political worldviews as protective factors during an ongoing national trauma.

This study examined religiosity and political worldviews, specifically government support, as socio-cultural mechanisms that buffer anxiety and promote coping during an ongoing war. Drawing on Terror Management Theory (TMT) and Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, we hypothesized that these orientations would be associated with higher individual and collective coping: individual resilience, societal resilience, perceived social cohesion, and hope, and with lower psychological distress, as well as better preservation of these resources over time. Data were collected across seven waves during

Perils of partialing psychosocial risk and protective factors: Effects on construct validity.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple psychosocial factors can influence any given health outcome. To establish independent effects, partialing correlated risk or protective factors (e.g., simultaneous inclusion in regressions) is a common strategy. However, partialing can alter construct validity for even well-established measures. The present studies used the interpersonal circumplex (IPC) and elements of the five-factor model as frameworks to evaluate this issue. METHOD: In Study 1, a representative sample of 1,356 U.S. adults completed measures of social anxiety, social support, and interpersonal problems.

Key factors for promoting protective behaviours in future pandemics: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical importance of protective behaviours-such as mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and physical distancing-in managing public health crises. Understanding the factors that influence these behaviours is essential for improving preparedness and response in future health crises. This umbrella review aimed to synthesize evidence on determinants of protective behaviours during pandemics and to provide recommendations for policy and practice. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we conducted an umbrella review of peer-reviewed literature reviews

A Systematic Review of Risk and Protective Factors of Borderline Personality Disorder.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), certain criteria are used for the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Although there is evidence that several risk factors could predispose individuals to BPD, it is still not clear what the etiologic pathways of this personality disorder are. The aim of this systematic review has been to identify, classify, analyze and interpret data regarding risk and protective factors for BPD to inform policies and practices in terms of public health. In total, 15 studies were included in this sys

Antenatal Psychiatric Hospitalization: Factors Associated With Newborns' Custody Under Child Protective Services.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric illness during pregnancy is associated with adverse obstetric outcomes, but investigations into its impact on parenting capacity are limited. Child Protective Services (CPS) contact disproportionately impacts families marginalized by poverty, mental health disorders, and substance use disorders. Recently, there have been investigations into the significance of psychiatric illness and nonmental health-related factors that predict CPS custody arrangements. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical factors associated with newborns' custody under CPS for mothers with antenatal psych
