Acute renal vein thrombosis, oral contraceptives, and protein S deficiency: a successful catheter-directed thrombolysis.

Acute renal vein thrombosis (RVT) is a rare but noteworthy form of venous thromboembolism. Traditional management has been systemic anticoagulation with heparin, followed by warfarin. We report a case of acute RVT with multiple pulmonary emboli that occurred in a 40-year-old woman who was taking oral contraceptives and was subsequently found to have protein S deficiency. The patient was treated with catheter-directed thrombolysis, and complete resolution of the RVT was achieved. This case suggests that oral contraceptive use in a patient with protein S deficiency may interact in a synergistic

Dural arteriovenous fistula after craniotomy for pilocytic astrocytoma in a patient with protein S deficiency.

BACKGROUND: We report an unusual case, which may provide insight into the etiology and pathogenesis of dural arteriovenous malformation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 24-year-old woman presented with hemorrhage into a pilocytic astrocytoma of the collicular plate. Angiography was normal and the tumor was surgically resected. She developed sigmoid sinus thrombosis and a transverse/sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula 11 months after this and was found to have protein S deficiency. The fistula was not treated. Angiography 4 years later was unchanged. CONCLUSION: This report illustrates an acquired

Management of patients with protein s deficiency: focus on clinical course and direct oral anticoagulants.

BACKGROUND: Protein S (PS) is a cofactor of protein C (PC) which, when activated to activated PC (APC), mainly acts to degrade coagulation factor Va and VIIIa, and its deficiency may trigger an array of venous thromboembolic events (VTE); when unprovoked and life-threatening, these need indefinite anticoagulation. Direct oral anti coagulants (doac) are efficient drugs in therapy and prevention of VTE, although the optimal prophylactic doses in different conditions are not identified. METHODS: General characteristics and clinical events of 33 PS deficient patients (7 uneventful, 10 carrying als

Pedigree analysis of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with compound heterozygous hereditary protein S deficiency.

This study investigates the relationship between hereditary protein S deficiency (PSD) and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) through phenotypic and genetic analyses in a proband and family members with compound heterozygous PROS1 mutations. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of one patient diagnosed with CVST treated in The Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in July 2025. Peripheral venous blood samples were collected from the proband and 14 individuals from three generations, and relevant coagulation parameter

[Hereditary protein S deficiency in a patient with prominent mesenteric venous thrombosis: A case report].

Hereditary protein S deficiency (PSD) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in the PROS1 gene which can cause venous thrombosis. Individuals with PSD usually present with recurrent deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism, but thrombosis may occur at unusual sites, such as the mesenteric and portal veins. Here we report a case of hereditary protein S deficiency patient with predominant mesenteric venous thrombosis. A 57-year-old man was admitted for abdominal pain and bilateral lower limber swelling. His sister had a history of thrombotic disease. On admission, His temper

Moyamoya Syndrome (MMS) in a Patient With Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Protein S Deficiency.

The association between Moyamoya syndrome (MMS) and sickle cell disease (SCD) has been well-established in pediatric populations; however, limited literature exists documenting the characteristics and management of MMS in adult SCD patients. Studies have indicated the role of endovascular management in secondary stroke prevention for pediatric populations, with no current guidelines available for adult populations. Here, we describe a unique case of MMS in a 30-year-old patient with SCD and incidental protein S deficiency. Our unique case highlights a patient at high risk for neurosurgical int

Protein S Deficiency with Recurrent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Post Thrombotic Syndrome: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Protein S is a vitamin K-dependent protein that acts as a break in secondary hemostasis by inactivating activated factor V and activated factor VIII. We report a case of a 40 years old male who had the first episode of deep vein thrombosis of the left lower limb 10 years back, which despite treatment, reoccurred 3 months later in the bilateral lower limb. Thrombophilic screening showed severe protein S deficiency. The patient then developed deep vein thrombosis of both upper limbs. The patient was advised to place an inferior vena cava filter, which he denied. The patient is now pr

Role of protein S deficiency in children with venous thromboembolism. An observational international cohort study.

Venous thromboembolism [TE] is a multifactorial disease, and protein S deficiency [PSD] constitutes a major risk factor. In the present study the prevalence of PSD and the clinical presentation at TE onset in a cohort of children is reported. In 367 unselected paediatric patients with TE (age 0.1-18 years) recruited between July 1996 and December 2013, a comprehensive thrombophilia screening was performed along with recording of anamnestic data. Thirty of 367 paediatric patients (8.2 %) derived from 27 families had PSD. Mean age at first TE onset was 14.5 years (range 0.1 to 18). Thrombotic lo

Postvaricella purpura fulminans with no evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) or protein S deficiency.

The mechanism of postvaricella purpura fulminans is thought to be due to development of antiprotein S antibodies. These antibodies lead to an acquired transient severe protein S deficiency which results in disseminated intravascular coagulation and microvascular thrombosis. Here a patient presented with postvaricella purpura fulminans, where no clinical or laboratory evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation could be found and there was no deficiency of protein S.

[Idiopathic portal hypertension, multiple focal nodular hepatic hyperplasia, the CREST syndrome and protein S deficiency].

A 54 year old woman with idiopathic portal hypertension, CREST syndrome, protein "S" deficiency and multiple focal nodular hyperplasia is reported. The patient presented several episodes of upper digestive bleeding due to portal hypertension gastropathy and to esophageal varices. Treatment with propanolol and isosorbide 5-mononitrate failed to control recurrent bleeding and a portacaval shunt was performed. At operation, ten hepatic nodes were found, being diagnosed as focal nodular hyperplasia in the pathologic study. Congestive gastropathy, esophageal varices and splenomegaly disappeared aft

[Hereditary deficiency of antithrombin III, protein C, protein S and factor XII in 121 patients with venous or arterial thrombosis].

INTRODUCTION: Hereditary thrombophilia is caused by various inherited disorders which lead to familial tendency to recurrent venous thrombosis usually at an early age and with spontaneous onset. In the studies reported so far, the different prevalence of hereditary thrombophilia among patients with venous thrombosis was found, greatly depending on criteria for selection of patients. Arterial thrombosis is most often the consequence of arteriosclerosis but the prevalence of hereditary thrombophilia among young patients with arterial thrombosis and without recognized risk factors for arterioscle

Influence of Factor V Leiden Mutation and Protein C and Protein S Deficiencies on Preeclampsia Among Sudanese Women.

Background Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious pregnancy complication that can endanger the health of both mothers and fetuses. Genetic factors, such as mutations in thrombophilia and deficiencies in natural anticoagulants, could contribute to its development, but their exact roles are not well-understood, especially among Sudanese women. Objective To assess the relationship between the Factor V Leiden (FVL) thrombophilic mutation and reduced levels of the natural anticoagulants Protein C (PC) and Protein S (PS) with the occurrence of PE among Sudanese women. Methods and materials A case-control st

A 37-year-old pregnant woman (23 weeks' gestation) was consulted to us because of the left leg pain. On examination, she was diagnosed as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism due to protein S deficiency. She was admitted to our hospital and underwent anticoagulant therapy (heparin 10,000 units per day). At 38 weeks' gestation, she was scheduled for cesarean section. Before operation, she received anticoagulant therapy with continuous infusion of heparin (30,000 units per day) and prophylactic placement of an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. Heparin was discontinued 6 hours before

A case of warfarin skin necrosis despite enoxaparin anticoagulation in a patient with protein S deficiency.

Warfarin-induced skin necrosis is a rare complication associated with the use of oral anticoagulants. Most patients develop this at the initiation of therapy, often while still receiving intravenous unfractionated heparin (UFH). Recently, low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) have gained wider use, providing an option for outpatient treatment of deep-vein thrombosis. The treatment protocols are similar to UFH, including the early initiation of oral anticoagulation with warfarin. A Medline search failed to reveal any cases of warfarin-induced skin necrosis while using a LMWH. We present a patie
