Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a rare complication of cytomegalovirus (CMV) enteritis in immunocompetent individuals. We present a case of a previously healthy 60-year-old woman with an acute CMV infection, manifesting as intractable vomiting and diarrhea, refractory electrolyte disturbances, and anasarca. The diagnostic evaluation showed low serum protein levels and an increased fecal alpha-1 antitrypsin clearance, confirming PLE. CMV-specific immunohistochemistry on duodenal samples subsequently confirmed that the PLE was caused by CMV enteritis. She completed treatment with valganciclo

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) can be caused by erosive and nonerosive gastrointestinal diseases, mesenteric lymphatic obstruction, and increased central venous pressure. Superior mesenteric artery pathology (SMAP), including dissection or occlusion is another very rarely reported etiology. Management of PLE includes treatment of the underlying cause in addition to a low-fat, high-protein, medium-chain triglyceride diet to improve nutrition. The management of SMAP and its complications, including PLE, necessitates a multidisciplinary approach involving vascular surgeons and gastroenterologis

Lupus protein-losing enteropathy (LUPLE) is a rare condition in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Since the causes and exact pathological mechanism have not been elucidated, appropriate treatment has not been determined. Here, we report the case of a 69-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus who developed LUPLE which was successfully treated with belimumab without an increase in glucocorticoid dose. This case suggests that belimumab monotherapy may be a treatment option for LUPLE.

BACKGROUND: Collagenous duodenitis and gastritis are rare histopathological findings in children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: : We describe a four-year old girl, who presented with non-bloody diarrhea for two months and progressive edema with an albumin of 16g/dl.
RESULTS: The diagnosis of a protein losing enteropathy was made. Extensive investigations withheld only an infectious cause of the protein losing enteropathy (cytomegalovirus and adenovirus). However, the patients still required repetitive albumin infusions 3.5 months after onset of symptoms without spontaneous recovery. Therefore, a new

As protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) can lead to hypogammaglobulinemia and lymphopenia, and since common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is associated with digestive complications, we wondered if (1) PLE could occur during CVID and (2) specific features could help determine whether a patient with antibody deficiency has CVID, PLE, or both. Eligible patients were thus classified in 3 groups: CVID + PLE (n = 8), CVID-only (= 19), and PLE-only (n = 13). PLE was diagnosed using fecal clearance of α1-antitrypsin or 111In-labeled albumin. We report the case of a 63-year-old female patient with liver cirrhosis who presented with symptoms of severe hypoalbuminaemia and diarrhoea. After ruling out other causes of hypoalbuminaemia and confirmation of an elevated faecal α-1 antitrypsin clearance, the diagnosis of protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) could be established. Since PLE is a syndrome caused by various diseases, classified into erosive and non-erosive gastrointestinal diseases or lymphatic obstruction, an extensive work-up was necessary, establishing the final diagnosis of Crohn's disease.

We present the case of a 1-year-old boy who developed protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) within 2 months of a fenestrated Fontan procedure. His fenestration rapidly closed despite bilateral pulmonary stenosis (BPS). Subsequent to PLE onset, both fenestration and the bilateral pulmonary artery were reconstructed, and the patient's PLE had been in remission, with additive use of medications, for more than 2 years. Notably, although fenestration closed again and central venous pressure (CVP) reduction was minimal, the surrogates of venous return resistance were markedly suppressed as shown by incre

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS- CoV-2) is known as COVID 19 seems to be one of the most contagious and dangerous infection in children and adults. According to first adult studies association of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms with COVID 19 infection was as high as 79% (1).But later study showed lower association around 18% (2).As the pandemic of COVID 19 is going on, different clinical presentation of disease especially in children are well appeared. In addition atypical presentations may confuse and mislead physician to do different diagnostic procedures an

BACKGROUND: Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) because of chronic inflammatory enteropathy (CIE) in dogs is often treated with a combination of glucocorticoids and second-line immunosuppressant (SLI). This combined approach might not be necessary in all dogs.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To describe diagnostic features and outcomes of dogs with PLE treated with glucocorticoids alone (group P) or with glucocorticoids and SLI (group S).
ANIMALS: Thirty-one dogs with PLE.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of signalment data from diagnostic procedures, treatment, and outcome of dogs with CIE

RATIONALE: Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is a life-threatening disorder; prompt diagnosis is vital. Surgical treatment is often required, but some cases can be treated conservatively. We herein report an extremely rare case wherein protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) developed after conservative treatment of NOMI.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 66-year-old man. He underwent laparoscopic super low anterior resection and temporary ileostomy for sigmoid colon cancer and rectum cancer. During the postoperative course, he developed ileus. Subsequently, he developed shock. On examinatio

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia or Waldmann's disease is an uncommon cause of protein losing enteropathy with an unknown etiology and is usually diagnosed during childhood. It is characterized by dilation and leakage of intestinal lymph vessels leading to hypoalbuminemia, hypogammaglobulinemia and lymphopenia. Differential diagnosis should include erosive and non-erosive gastrointestinal disorders, conditions involving mesenteric lymphatic obstruction and cardiovascular disorders that increase central venous pressure. Since there are no accurate serological or radiological available tests,

Protein-losing enteropathy is a primary or secondary manifestation of a group of conditions, and etiologies which are broadly divisible into those with mucosal injury on the basis of inflammatory and ulcerative conditions, mucosal injury without erosions or ulcerations, and lymphatic abnormalities. We describe the first case of protein-losing enteropathy in a pediatric patient, with severe skeletal dysplasia consistent with thanatophoric dysplasia type I and DNA analysis that revealed a c.1949A>T (p.Lys650Met) in exon 15 of the FGFR3 gene. She presented with protein-losing enteropathy in her 6

OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively characterize the immunologic characteristics of patients with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) post-Fontan and compare them with patients without PLE post-Fontan.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients with PLE post-Fontan and age-matched controls post-Fontan were prospectively studied with laboratory markers of immune function. Infectious history was obtained by interview and chart review. The groups' demographics, cardiac history, immune characteristics, and infection history were compared using appropriate 2-group statistics.
RESULTS: A total of 16 patients enrolled (8 patie

The authors present a patient with situs inversus totalis, dextrocardia, and tetralogy of Fallot with complete AV canal who underwent pulmonary valve-sparing complete repair during infancy but developed progressive pulmonary outflow obstruction on serial follow-up. His right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) was prestented as a precursor for Melody valve placement. After this, he developed protein losing enteropathy (PLE) which was unresponsive to medical management. Finally, he received transcatheter Melody valve percutaneously in the pulmonic position that lead to clinical and biochemical res

Protein-losing enteropathy in children is caused by intestinal metabolic, inflammatory, or infectious processes, or by lymphatic obstruction (intestinal lymphangiectasia). In this report, a 17-month-old child is presented with protein-losing enteropathy due to intestinal malrotation and chronic midgut volvulus causing lymphatic obstruction and spillage of lymph in the intestine and the peritoneum. This report should alert the pediatrician that intestinal malrotation should be added to the wide list of possible causes of protein-losing enteropathy in children.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) or South American Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by a dimorphic fungus, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. It represents the most important systemic mycosis in South America and with higher prevalence among male inhabitants of the rural area. PCM usually affects the lungs, and rarely the intestines. The authors report three cases of PCM, treated at the University Hospital of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul whose scintigraphy with technetium-99 labeled human albumin revead intestinal protein loss.

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is an uncommon manifestation associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Here, a case with SLE and concomitant hypoalbuminemia is reported. Technetium-99m albumin scintigraphy demonstrated a localized lesion in the ascending colon, and the diagnosis of SLE-related PLE was established. Due to a poor response to medical treatment, this patient received surgical resection, but relapse still developed later on. Recurrent protein-lose from the remaining of the colon was documented by repeated images. This report discusses the management of SLE-related PLE an

We report on a newborn boy with junctional epidermolysis bullosa and pyloric atresia. Blisters were found on his skin at birth, especially in places exposed to pressure, and appeared later on his mucous membranes. Epidermolysis bullosa was confirmed by electron microscopy. Radiography revealed pyloric atresia, and a gastroduodenostomy was carried out at 7 days of age. A connective tissue septum was found between his ventricle and duodenum. The skin changes were mild, and the clinical course was determined by his protein-losing enteropathy. He died at 66 days of age from pseudomonas sepsis.
