Members of the alpha-proteobacteria display a broad range of interactions with higher eukaryotes. Some are pathogens of humans, such as Rickettsia and Bartonella that are associated with diseases like epidemic typhus, trench fever, cat scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis. Others like the Brucella cause abortions in pregnant animals. Yet other species have evolved elaborate interactions with plants; in this group we find both plant symbionts and parasites. Despite radically different host preferences, extreme genome size variations and the absence of toxin genes, similarities in survival

Composition of pulmonary microbiome of patients with severe pneumonia is poorly known. The aim of this work was to analyse the lung microbiome of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with severe community acquired pneumonia (CAP) between 2019 and 2021 in comparison with a control group of 6 patients undergoing digestive surgery. As a second objective, the diagnostic capabilities of metagenomics was also studied in a small group of selected patients. The lung microbiome of patients with viral (5 with Influenza A and 8 with SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia at admission showed a similar diver

Plastic pollution has emerged as a major environmental challenge. While various microorganisms and enzymatic mechanisms involved in plastic degradation have been described, the microbial communities present in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) - particularly those linked to the oil industry - remain largely underexplored as potential reservoirs of plastic-associated metabolic functions. This study evaluated the potential of microbial communities from an industrial WWTP located in an oil refinery complex to colonise different plastic polymers, as well as their genetic potential for plastic-as

Flooding compromises the microbiological quality of domestic and recreational water sources, increasing exposure to waterborne and opportunistic pathogens in affected communities. Following widespread flooding triggered by the September 2023 controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams in Ghana, which led to massive flooding, we assessed the microbial quality of water bodies in communities downstream of the Volta River and associated public and ecosystem health implications. In July 2024, water was collected from multiple source types across four downstream townships (Asutsuare, Aveyime,

Respiratory health problems in poultry production are frequent and knotty and thus attract the attention of farmers and researchers. The breakthrough of gene sequencing technology has revealed that healthy lungs harbor rich microbiota, whose succession and homeostasis are closely related to lung health status, suggesting a new idea to explore the mechanism of lung injury in broilers with pulmonary microbiota as the entry point. This study aimed to investigate the succession of pulmonary microbiota in healthy broilers during the growth cycle. Fixed and molecular samples were collected from the

Endophytic microbes are plant-associated microorganisms that reside in the interior tissue of plants without causing damage to the host plant. Endophytic microbes can boost the availability of nutrient for plant by using a variety of mechanisms such as fixing nitrogen, solubilizing phosphorus, potassium, and zinc, and producing siderophores, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and phytohormones that help plant for growth and protection against various abiotic and biotic stresses. The microbial endophytes have attained the mechanism of producing various hydrolytic enzymes such as cellulase, pectinase, x

The microbiome, i.e., the communities of microbes that inhabit the surfaces exposed to the external environment, participates in the regulation of host physiology, including the immune response against pathogens. At the same time, the immune response shapes the microbiome to regulate its composition and function. How the crosstalk between the immune system and the microbiome regulates the response to fungal infection has remained relatively unexplored. We have previously shown that strict anaerobes protect from infection with the opportunistic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus by counteracting the

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a common nosocomial infection in mechanically ventilated patients. Biofilm formation is one of the mechanisms through which the endotracheal tube (ET) facilitates bacterial contamination of the lower airways. In the present study, we analyzed the composition of the ET biofilm flora by means of culture dependent and culture independent (16 S rRNA gene clone libraries and pyrosequencing) approaches. Overall, the microbial diversity was high and members of different phylogenetic lineages were detected (Actinobacteria, beta-Proteobacteria, Candida spp., Clo

It was previously believed that the microbial community in the esophagus was relatively stable, but it has been reported that different esophageal diseases have different microbial community characteristics. In this study, we recruited patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and collected 51 pairs of tumor and adjacent non-tumor tissues for full-length 16S rDNAsequencing and qPCR to compare the differences in microbial community structure. The results of sequencing in 19 pairs of tissues showed that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Deinococcus-Thermus, and Actinobacte

Many endophytic bacteria exert beneficial effects on their host, but still little is known about the bacteria associated with plants growing in areas heavily polluted by hydrocarbons. The aim of the study was characterization of culturable hydrocarbon-degrading endophytic bacteria associated with Lotus corniculatus L. and Oenothera biennis L. collected in long-term petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted site using culture-dependent and molecular approaches. A total of 26 hydrocarbon-degrading endophytes from these plants were isolated. Phylogenetic analyses classified the isolates into the phyla Prote

We developed a method based on real-time PCR for the specific and rapid enumeration of a trichloroethylene-degrading methanotroph, Methylocystis sp. M, with the aim of monitoring the strain in groundwater. A primer set designed from the nucleotide sequence of the mmoC gene of a soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) gene cluster from Methylocystis sp. M was specific to amplify the DNA region from the strain and no PCR products were amplified with the sMMO gene clusters from six other methanotroph strains. The real-time PCR reliably quantified Methylocystis sp. M over at least five orders of magn

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is renowned for its remarkable regenerative capabilities, which are not diminished by the transition from a neotenic to a metamorphic state. This study explored the microbiome dynamics in axolotl limb regeneration by examining the microbial communities present in neotenic and metamorphic axolotls at two critical stages of limb regeneration: pre-amputation and during blastema formation. Utilizing 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, we investigated the variations in microbiome profiles associated with different developmental and regenerative states. Our findings revea

There is an urgent need to investigate the distinct performance and mechanism of traditional constructed wetland (CW), microbial fuel cells-constructed wetland (MFC-CW) and direct-enchanced constructed wetland (ECCW) for antibiotics removal. To address this issues, three kinds of CWs were bulit and distinct performance and mechanism for levofloxacin (LVFX) removal was expored in this study. MFCCW, ECCW achieved high LVFX removal efficiencies compared with traditional constructed wetland (96.0 % in MFCCW, 95.0 % in ECCW and 91.2 % in CW) and the biodegradation was the key contributor (90.7 %-95

Municipal wastewater treatment often lacks carbon source, while carbon-rich organics in food waste are deficiently utilized. In this study, the food waste fermentation liquid (FWFL) was step-fed into a bench-scale step-feed three-stage anoxic/aerobic system (SFTS-A/O), to investigate its performance in nutrients removal and the response of microbial community as a supplementary carbon source. The results showed that the total nitrogen (TN) removal rate increased by 21.8-109.3% after step-feeding FWFL. However, the biomass of the SFTS-A/O system was increased by 14.6% and 11.9% in the two phase

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by gluten in genetically susceptible individuals. The recent increase in CD incidence suggests that additional environmental factors, such as intestinal microbiota alterations, are involved in its pathogenesis. However, there is no direct evidence of modulation of gluten-induced immunopathology by the microbiota. We investigated whether specific microbiota compositions influence immune responses to gluten in mice expressing the human DQ8 gene, which confers moderate CD genetic susceptibility. Germ-free mice, clean specific-pathoge

With the ultimate aim of developing bioremediation technology that use the optimum bacterial community for each pollutant, we performed polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and phylogenetic analysis and identified communities of culturable bacteria in HgCl(2)- and trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated soil microcosms. PCR-DGGE band patterns were similar at 0 and 1 ppm HgCl(2), but changes in specific bands occurred at 10 ppm HgCl(2). Band patterns appearing at 10 and 100 ppm TCE were very different from those at 0 ppm. Phylogenetic analysis showed four
