Craniofacial hyperostoses in Proteus syndrome -- a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Description of a patient with a rare syndrome leading to the partial overgrowth of craniofacial bones. CASE REPORT: In a 17-year-old female patient with severe hyperostoses of the craniofacial bones asymmetric overgrowth of the right upper and left lower limbs, linear hyperpigmentation of the right arm and a history of regional lipomatosis were found. These manifestations were suggestive of Proteus syndrome. The management of the craniofacial involvement is described and a literature overview presented. CONCLUSION: Proteus syndrome is a rare overgrowth syndrome probably related to

Proteus mirabilis biofilms and the encrustation of urethral catheters.

Bacterial biofilms were observed on 69 of 75 catheters taken from patients undergoing long-term bladder management. Ten catheters were colonized by pure cultures of Proteus mirabilis. In each of these cases the bacteria formed layers on the catheter surface, underlying encrustations of struvite and hydroxyapatite which partially or completely occluded the catheter lumen. Encrustation was also apparent on catheters colonized by P. mirabilis plus other species, but was rarely seen on catheters colonized by non-urease-producing species. These observations support the hypothesis that catheter encr

Transmission of Proteus syndrome from father to son?

We present a male infant with cranial hemi-hypertrophy, a lymphangioma, a lipoma, and epidermal naevi. A diagnosis of Proteus syndrome was made. His father had had a large lymphangioma resected from the right side of the face as a child. We propose that Proteus syndrome has been transmitted from father to son.

Circumcision and periurethral carriage of Proteus mirabilis in boys.

Swabs were taken for culture from the periurethral area and urethral meatus in 124 uncircumcised and 60 circumcised boys. Proteus mirabilis was grown from 28 (22.6%) swabs from uncircumcised boys and from only one (1.7%) swab from circumcised boys. This supports the idea that the prepuce may be the source of proteus urinary tract infection.

The Proteus syndrome: the magnetic resonance and radiological features.

The Proteus syndrome is a recently delineated group of skeletal and mesodermal malformations. Its characteristics include hemihypertrophy and fatty/lymphangiomatous masses. This description outlines the imaging sequences available to the radiologist. It is mainly concerned with the use of magnetic resonance imaging. This shows the extent of the mesodermal malformation with particular reference to the extent of intra abdominal infiltration.

Hyperammonemia in a boy with obstructive ureterocele and proteus infection.

We report on a boy with ureteroceles that obstructed the bladder outlet and ureters, who presented with sepsis and hyperammonemia despite normal liver function. The hyperammonemia was most likely caused by excessive absorption of ammonia produced by Proteus mirabilis in the obstructed urinary tract.

Adhesion of Proteus species to various cell types.

Pathogenic and saprophytic Proteus strains from the urine of patients with urinary tract infections and healthy adults respectively were evaluated with regard to their ability to adhere in vitro to homologous cells (uroepithelial cells from urinary sediment and cultured WISH cells) and heterologous cells (RK-13 and MDCK cells). The effect on attachment of pretreating bacteria with subinhibitory concentrations of piperacillin and sagamicin was also determined for one sensitive and one resistant strain. Fifty percent of the pathogenic Proteus strains demonstrated good adherence to human urinary

Proteus syndrome caused by novel somatic AKT1 duplication.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare overgrowth disorder that presents with asymmetrical growth of the bone and fat tissues following a mosaic pattern mutation. The estimated worldwide incidence is approximately one in one million live births. Proteus syndrome causes disfigurement and psychological impact through its effects on somatic tissue. Due to its rarity and diversity of tissues involved, it represents a significant challenge to caregivers and multidisciplinary medical teams. Here, we report a Saudi girl, with a large left cervical mass discovered antenatally. This mass was identified as a g

Proteus mirabilis thoracic vertebral osteomyelitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Proteus mirabilis is the second most common pathogen that causes urinary tract infections after Escherichia coli. In rare cases, it is associated with vertebral osteomyelitis. The underlying mechanism of this relationship may be related to the retrograde dissemination of bacteria through the paravertebral venous plexus. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an 80-year-old Taiwanese woman who had recurrent episodes of fever and chronic back pain for 1 year. All blood cultures were positive for P. mirabilis. Inflammation scans and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a previously un

Multidrug-Resistant Proteus mirabilis Strain with Cointegrate Plasmid.

Proteus mirabilis is a component of the normal intestinal microflora of humans and animals, but can cause urinary tract infections and even sepsis in hospital settings. In recent years, the number of multidrug-resistant P. mirabilis isolates, including the ones producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), is increasing worldwide. However, the number of investigations dedicated to this species, especially, whole-genome sequencing, is much lower in comparison to the members of the ESKAPE pathogens group. This study presents a detailed analysis of clinical multidrug-resistant ESBL-producing

Proteus syndrome: MRI characteristics of plantar cerebriform hyperplasia.

Proteus syndrome is a rare congenital hamartomatous syndrome with a variety of abnormalities. It shares many features with other congenital hamartomatous disorders, but cerebriform hyperplasia of the soles and the palms is known as a quite distinctive characteristic in the dermatologic literature. The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate the MRI features of plantar cerebriform hyperplasia in a 9-year-old boy with known Proteus syndrome.

Prenatal Diagnosis of Proteus Syndrome: About a Case.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare disorder (< 1/1000000), marked by progressive overgrowth commonly impacting the skeleton, skin, adipose tissue, and central nervous system. Clinical criteria were established in 2019. PS arises from a somatic activating variation in the AKT1 gene. We report the second case of PS diagnosed prenatally using whole exome sequencing (WES). A 34-year-old woman was referred for nonvisualized anterior brain structures and genital anomalies. At 21 weeks of gestation (WG), ultrasonography confirmed brain anomalies, genital anomalies, and macrosomia. Array-CGH revealed no

Isolation and Characterization of Lytic Proteus Virus 309.

Proteus mirabilis is frequently associated with complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) and is the main cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). Treatment of such infections is complicated and challenging due to the biofilm forming abilities of P. mirabilis. If neglected or mistreated, infections may lead to life-threating conditions such as cystitis, pyelonephritis, kidney failure, and bacteremia that may progress to urosepsis. Treatment with antibiotics, especially in cases of recurring and persistent infections, leads to the development of resistant strains. Recen

Computational analysis of LexA regulons in Proteus species.

Deferiprone is the only orally active iron-chelating drug to be used therapeutically in conditions of transfusional iron overload. It is an orphan drug designed and developed primarily by academic initiatives for the treatment of iron overload in thalassaemia, which is endemic in the Mediterranean, Middle East and South East Asia and is considered an orphan disease in the European Union and North America. Deferiprone has been used in several other iron or other metal imbalance conditions and has prospects of wider clinical applications. Deferiprone has high affinity for iron and interacts with
