OBJECTIVE: Use of standardized cement augmentation of the proximal femur nail antirotation (PFNA) for the treatment of trochanteric fragility fractures, which are associated with high morbidity and mortality, to achieve safer conditions for immediate full weight-bearing and mobilization, thus, improving preservation of function and independency of orthogeriatric patients.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this review article was to investigate the incidence and predisposing factors for periprosthetic proximal femoral fractures (PFF) following total hip arthroplasty.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search of the medical literature in MEDLINE and EMBASE databases to review articles related to PFF, their incidence and risk factors.

Fixation is used to treat more than two-thirds of proximal femur fractures. The mortality rate is about 25% at one year in these patients, who have an average age of about 80 years.
