CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old female intact Moluccan cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) was evaluated because of coelomic distention, presumed to be secondary to an abdominal hernia. The patient also had a history of rapid weight gain and polyuria and polydipsia.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Ultrasonography was used to confirm the existence of a pseudohernia that appeared to contain the small intestines, pancreas, and reproductive tract. Results of plasma biochemical analysis revealed hyperglycemia, hypophosphatemia, and high nonfasting bile acid concentrations and aspartate aminotransferase activity. A

Trueperella pyogenes is an opportunistic Gram-positive bacterium that induces purulent lesions and abscesses in cattle, small ruminants, and swine. In birds, T. pyogenes infections have been linked to lameness and osteomyelitis in turkeys (Phasianidae) and hepatic fibriscess in turkeys and pigeons (Columbidae). An 18-mo-old backyard rooster with a history of progressive emaciation was submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) laboratory system. At necropsy, unusual numerous miliary granulomas were identified, primarily in the spleen, but granulomas were also observed in

A 2-year-old, egg-laying maroon-bellied conure (Pyrrhura frontalis) was referred for treatment of bilateral femoral fractures believed to be secondary to recent egg laying and nutritional and husbandry deficiencies. On radiographs, all skeletal components were diffusely osteopenic, precluding surgical fixation. A novel device to stabilize the bilateral femoral fractures was manufactured with polyvinyl chloride piping, which braced the bird's feet at the level of the perch and supported its upper body weight via a breast plate, thus maintaining the bird in a physiologically appropriate perching

The aim of the present comparative investigation was to examine annual pineal cytological changes and the action of melatonin in relation to testicular activity in two wild tropical avian species. The findings revealed that in both blossomheaded parakeets (Psittacula cyanocephala) and Indian weaver birds (Ploceus philippinus) the pineal gland was inactive, with reduced karyometric values during the breeding season. A pinealoactive phase showing significantly increased pinealocyte nuclear diameter corresponded with the nonbreeding phase. Administration of melatonin (250 micrograms/100 g body wt

Psittaciformes kept as pets can serve as reservoirs of various microorganisms, many of which have zoonotic potential, including Candida spp. In this study, the antifungal susceptibility profiles of 16 Candida spp. isolated from the oral and cloacal cavities of 20 pet parrots were evaluated. Samples from the animals' oral and cloacal cavities were obtained with swabs and stored in sterile tubes. For mycological isolation, samples were seeded on Mycosel agar medium at 30°C (86°F) for up to 5 days. The 16 isolates were seeded onto chromogenic medium to verify the species. For the antifungal susce

Revista brasileira de parasitologia veterinaria = Brazilian journal of veterinary parasitology : Orgao Oficial do Colegio Brasileiro de Parasitologia Veterinaria2025eng
Members of the family Trichomonadidae, particularly Trichomonas gallinae, are globally distributed avian parasites that primarily infect birds from the orders Columbiformes, Falconiformes, and Strigiformes. Although infections in Passeriformes are often subclinical, clinical cases have been reported. Transmission occurs through direct contact or indirectly via contaminated food or water, enabling infection across various avian orders, including Anseriformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Passeriformes, Piciformes, Psittaciformes, and Strigiformes. This study aimed to assess the occur

CASE DESCRIPTION A 16-year-old female hawk-headed parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus) was evaluated because of beak trauma and difficulty eating. CLINICAL FINDINGS Physical examination revealed a lateral tissue protrusion in the left half of the oropharyngeal cavity ventral to the proximal aspect of the maxillary tomium as well as a small bony prominence on the left jugal arch. Range of motion of the beak appeared normal. A CT scan of the skull revealed rostroventral displacement of the left palatine bone from the maxilla and left lateral subluxation and lateral luxation of the pterygoid-parasphen

We reviewed 11 cases of superficial chronic ulcerative dermatitis (SCUD) in psittacine birds that presented to an exotic animal practice over an 8-year period. African grey parrots ( Psittacus erithacus) were overrepresented, accounting for 55% of SCUD-affected birds. All affected birds were hand-reared pets and bonded strongly to their owners. In all cases, fungal culture results were negative. The most commonly cultured bacteria were Enterobacter cloacae (27%), followed by Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus (both 18%). An underlying cause of behavioral self-mutilation with secondary

Mycobacteriosis has long been recognized as a disease of companion psittacine birds. In this review, the signalment, clinical signs of disease, and diagnosis of mycobacteriosis in psittacine birds are presented. Although treatment of birds with mycobacteriosis is controversial, therapeutic protocols for use in psittacine birds have been developed based on protocols used in humans. Results of recent studies indicate that mycobacteriosis in psittacine birds is unlikely to represent a significant health risk for humans. However, the potential for zoonotic disease must be considered, especially if

OBJECTIVE: To characterize prevalence and type of cardiac disease evident in psittacine birds during postmortem examination.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
ANIMALS: 26 psittacine birds with gross and histologic evidence of cardiac disease.
PROCEDURE: Records of postmortem examinations of psittacine birds necropsied during a 4-year period were reviewed. Data on gross and histologic evidence of cardiac disease were analyzed. Birds identified included those in which congestive heart failure (CHF) was considered the primary cause of death and those in which substantial cardiac disease was evident

The number of psittacines kept as pets is rapidly increasing in Germany. The main cause of disease and death in these and other tropical birds are respiratory tract affections. Yet, a lack of consolidated, systematic research on the anatomy and pathology of these affections in gray parrots and amazons still widely persists. In a first step examinations on the anatomy of the respiratory tract of gray parrots and amazons were performed. By the means of computed tomography, morphological structures as well as volume and density measurements were conducted on this subject for the first time. By th

Infraorbital sinus infections, which form the bulk of upper respiratory tract infections in companion birds, are commonly encountered in clinical practice and often require medical and/or surgical management. The infraorbital sinus with its dorsal drainage into the nasal cavity makes it difficult to treat these infections. The sinus has various compartments throughout the skull, and subcutaneous tissue. As an aid in determining the location and extent of the sinuses of the parrot and macaw, a corrosion cast of the infraorbital sinus was made. Also, computed tomography (CT) images of cadaver he

Nocardiosis is described in two Pesquet's parrots (Psittrichas fulgidus). Granulomatous lesions containing numerous branching, filamentous, acid-fast, gram- and methenamine silver-positive organisms were observed in sections of lung from both parrots, suggesting an oral-respiratory portal of entry. Thyroid follicular hyperplasia and osteoporosis were observed in one parrot, suggesting the presence of an underlying nutritional or metabolic defect.

Expression of vibrant plumage color plays important communication roles in many avian clades, ranging from penguins to passerines, but comparatively less is known about color signals in parrots (order Psittaciformes). We measured variation in coloration from three plumage patches (red face, blue rump, red tail) in an introduced population of rosy-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) in Phoenix, Arizona, USA and examined color differences between the sexes and ages as well as relationships with several indices of quality, including disease presence/absence (infection with beak and feather di

BACKGROUND: Psittacine adenoviruses belong to the Adenoviridae family, that includes genera Aviadenovirus, Barthadenovirus, and Siadenovirus and may cause either fatal disease or subclinical infections. Subclinical infections are particularly relevant when infected birds enter the bird trade, as infected birds can act as sources of viral spread. Given the ease of transmission of these viruses, the availability of sensitive and specific diagnostic tools is essential. The purpose of this study was to establish a TaqMan-based quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay for the detection and quantification of P
