Under-documentation of psychiatric diagnoses among persons living with HIV in electronic medical records.

Persons living with HIV (PLWH) are significantly more likely to meet criteria for a psychiatric disorder compared to the general population. To our knowledge there are no prior studies that report rates of psychiatric diagnosis documentation in electronic medical records (EMRs) of PLWH. The goal for this study was to report the rates of a variety of psychiatric diagnoses among PLWH in electronic medical records. Participants (n = 2,336) were enrolled in the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Longitudinal Database study at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. Diagnostic codes were ext

A controlled comparison of HIV and general medical referrals to a liaison psychiatry service.

A retrospective case-control study was performed to compare the patterns of psychiatric illness and treatment in 70 patients referred to the psychiatric liaison service from the HIV/AIDS team in a London teaching hospital with 70 age- and sex-matched controls referred for psychiatric assessment from general medical and surgical wards or out-patient clinics. Organic, mood, adjustment and personality disorders were the most common primary diagnoses. The rate of referral in the HIV group was five times that in the control group. The prevalence of each group of diagnoses was not significantly diff

Reactivation of Latent Toxoplasmosis in a Schizophrenia Patient: A Case Report.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder characterized by chronic relapsing episodes of psychosis. The disease is multifactorial, where infections, genetic vulnerability and environmental factors are involved in the development of the illness. Toxoplasma gondii is one of the parasites that has long been known associated with schizophrenia in many studies. To date, there is growing evidence of association between T. gondii infections and schizophrenia. Herein we report a rare case of reactivated toxoplasmosis in a schizophrenia individual. This patient was incidentally diagnosed with reactiva

Disseminated mycobacteriosis and activation of latent opportunistic infections in the course of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) in a patient with AIDS: A case report.

Advanced HIV infection leads to profound immunosuppression and increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections. Resumption of antiretroviral therapy (ART) may result in immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS), which manifests as a worsening of an existing infection or the emergence of new ones. Disseminated mycobacteriosis caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is one of the most severe opportunistic infections in the course of AIDS. The aim of this paper is to present the diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties in a AIDS patient who developed IRIS with generalized MAC inf

Substance P and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection: Psychoneuroimmunology.

Effects on the immune system caused by changes in behavioral state or brain activity are mediated, at least in part, through neuroendocrine-immune pathways. Life stress and depression may be associated with altered blood levels of central nervous system-released neuropeptides, including substance P (SP). SP acts as a neuroregulator or neurotransmitter in the conduction of nociceptive stimuli, and is a modulator of neuroimmunoregulation. This review summarizes current knowledge regarding the role of the neuropeptide, SP, in psychoneuroimmunology, in particular as it relates to human immunodefic

The successful treatment of mania due to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome using ziprasidone: a case series.

Secondary causes of mania need to be considered when atypical features of mania are manifested. These would include those patients with a later onset and without a prior psychiatric history. This case series investigates the use of ziprasidone for the treatment of mania due to HIV, a complication that could develop in those patients with advanced stages of AIDS.

Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis With Serial Negative MRI Findings: An Evaluation Using Autoimmune Psychosis Criteria.

Autoimmune psychosis criteria have been proposed for autoimmune encephalitis with prominent psychiatric symptoms as an alternative to biomarker-based diagnostic approaches such as the Graus criteria. We present a case of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis that was initially misdiagnosed as a psychiatric disorder due to serial negative MRI findings and subsequently re-evaluated correctly using autoimmune psychosis criteria. A 15-year-old male developed sudden-onset generalized convulsive seizures that increased progressively in frequency and fluctuating psychiatric symptoms

"Believing facilitates success": psychiatric nurses' perspectives on recovery.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric nurses play a crucial role in patient recovery processes, and their attitudes during these processes can directly influence the recovery of individuals with mental illness. However, the concept of recovery in psychiatric disorders is perceived differently among nurses, which, in turn, can affect the patient's recovery trajectory. This study aims to explore and investigate the perspectives, thoughts and experiences of nurses working in psychiatric clinics about recovery in mental illnesses. METHODS: The study was conducted between September and December 2021 at a Mental

Role of Pharmacogenetics in Improving the Safety of Psychiatric Care by Predicting the Potential Risks of Mania in CYP2D6 Poor Metabolizers Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder.

One of the main concerns in psychiatric care is safety related to drug management. Pharmacogenetics provides an important tool to assess causes that may have contributed the adverse events during psychiatric therapy. This study illustrates the potential of pharmacogenetics to identify those patients for which pharmacogenetic-guided therapy could be appropriate. It aimed to investigate CYP2D6 genotype in our psychiatric population to assess the value of introducing pharmacogenetics as a primary improvement for predicting side effects.A broad series of 224 psychiatric patients comprising psychot

Alteration of serotonin transporter messenger RNA level in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells from simian/human immunodeficiency virus infected Chinese rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Serotonin transporter (SERT, 5-HTT) is a key element in the serotonergic system which is probably involved in the psychiatric disorders commonly observed in people living with HIV/AIDS. However, no information is available about the effects of HIV infection on SERT expression. In this study, a TaqMan real-time RT-PCR method was established, levels of SERT mRNA in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and various tissues from normal Chinese rhesus macaques, in PBMCs from 32 SHIV-sf162p4 infected rhesus macaques and from 8 rhesus macaques before and 7, 14, 21, 28 and 196 days after SHIV

Prevalence and characteristics of psychiatric morbidity treated in specialized health care in a nationwide cohort of people with newly diagnosed Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric disorders have been implied as both risk factors and prodromal symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A better understanding of the history of psychiatric morbidity in people with AD may aid with understanding this relationship and highlight challenges in diagnosing AD in people with concomitant psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Medication use and Alzheimer's disease (MEDALZ) study is a nationwide register-based cohort of people (n = 70,718) who received a clinically verified AD diagnosis in Finland in 2005-2011 and were community-dwelling at the time of diagnosis. Visualizing BDSM and AIDS Activism: Archiving Pleasures, Sanitizing History.

The visual archive of AIDS and fetish activism is a rich resource for studying interlinkages between art and science, activism and public health, politics and medicine, pleasure and sexual health prevention. This article explores AIDS and fetish activism imagery from the first two decades of the Norwegian AIDS crisis. Interrogating the materiality and visual context of images - photographs, posters, flyers, and safer sex instructions - it maps out visualization practices in leather, BDSM and AIDS activism. AIDS and fetish imagery made some bodies, pleasures, and political goals visible - and r

Psychiatric manifestations as initial presentation for pediatric CNS germ cell tumors, a case series.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) germ cell tumors account for 3 % of all pediatric brain tumors in the USA. Presenting symptoms are typically location based with pineal tumors presenting with obstructive hydrocephalus and suprasellar tumors with hypothalamic/pituitary dysfunction and ophthalmologic abnormalities. Psychiatric manifestations such as psychosis and behavioral changes are atypical presentations of CNS germ cell tumors, with only 11 previously reported cases. METHODS: This is a retrospective case series describing patients with CNS germ cell tumors with an atypical presenta
