Positive Impact of Holistic Nursing on Cognitive Impairment and Psychiatric Symptoms in Patients With Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) affects millions of elderly individuals worldwide and has been clinically recognized as one of the most significant disorders compromising quality of life in late-stage human development. Exploring Psychiatric Home-Visit Nursing Practices for Patients with Schizophrenia and Hikikomori with a Thematic Analysis.

The phenomenon of some patients with schizophrenia withdrawing and becoming hikikomori needs to be resolved. In some countries, outreach methods are being employed. In Japan, psychiatric home-visit nursing for patients with schizophrenia and hikikomori is being implemented. However, it is not based on sufficient evidence and relies on the experience and intuition of individual nurses. This study explored the underlying themes in the nursing practices of psychiatric home-visit nurses via semi-structured interviews with 10 nurses and a thematic analysis. Nine key themes emerged. Four themes-(i)

Patients' descriptions of nursing interventions supporting quality of life in acute psychiatric wards: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People with mental disorders suffer from impaired quality of life (QoL). In psychiatric hospital wards nurses are in a close relationship with patients and have good opportunities to support patients' QoL. Still, relatively little is known about patients' perceptions related to nursing interventions by which nurses can support the QoL of patients with severe mental illness. OBJECTIVES: To explore patients' perceptions of nursing interventions in supporting patients' QoL in acute psychiatric inpatient settings. DESIGN: Explorative descriptive study design. SETTINGS: The study was

Occurrence of workplace violence and the psychological consequences of it among nurses working in psychiatric outpatient settings.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: There is a scarcity of studies concerning violence in psychiatric outpatient settings in the 2010s in spite of the deinstitutionalization of psychiatric services. Previous research on violence in psychiatric outpatient settings has failed to consider the association between the psychological consequences of violence, exposures to violence and background factors. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: It has been known for some time that exposures to violence are harmful for psychiatric inpatient nurses; the paper demonstrates that psychiatric outpatient nurs

Sex-role stereotyping in assessments of mental health made by psychiatric-mental health nurses.

To determine the amount of sex-role stereotyping in judgments of mental health made by psychiatric-mental health nurses, 150 of these nurses, divided into three equal groups, were asked to rate ideal states of mental health in males, females, and adults, respectively. An 83 percent return rate was obtained. Results showed: 1) there was less sex-role stereotyping than in a similar study reported in 1970 with other mental health professionals; 2) judgments of mental health closely resembled assessments of social desirability; 3) healthy females were rated closer to that which was considered desi

Genomics in psychiatric Nurse Practitioner practice: Moving from emerging trend to essential competency.

Genomics is increasingly influencing psychiatric practice as evidence links genetic variation with neurodevelopmental disorders, treatment response, and complex psychiatric presentations. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are well positioned to incorporate genomics into patient assessment and management; however, familiarity with testing options and clinical indications remains limited. This column reviews key genomic considerations for psychiatric practice, including pharmacogenomics, chromosomal microarray analysis, and exome or genome sequencing. Clinical "red flags," such as developmental de

The role of psychiatric nurses in nutritional care for treatment-resistant depression: a relapse-prevention perspective.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is associated with persistent symptoms, impaired functioning, physical comorbidity and a high risk of recurrence, making continuation and maintenance care particularly important. Nutrition may influence several modifiable aspects of recovery, including cardiometabolic health, daily functioning, self-care and treatment adherence, although evidence for a direct effect on depressive recurrence remains limited. This review examines the role of nutritional care within TRD relapse prevention, with particular attention to psychiatric nursing practise. Available di

Exploring Nurses' Experiences in Caring for Medical-Psychiatric Comorbid Patients: A Qualitative Interview Study.

Approximately one-third of patients who visit general hospitals have a mental disorder, which is associated with poorer outcomes and higher costs. Caring for these patients can be challenging for nurses, particularly when behaviours such as aggression, wandering, or lack of cooperation occur. To explore how nurses experience caring for patients with medical-psychiatric comorbidities in general hospital wards a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted. Sixteen registered nurses with varying experience from eight wards in a Dutch university medical centre participated. Da

Nurse-perpetrated abuse in Japanese psychiatric hospitals: a cross-sectional study of prevalence and correlates.

INTRODUCTION: The abuse of psychiatric inpatients in psychiatric hospitals is a global concern. Although the prevalence may be underestimated due to underreporting rates of physical abuse and restraint have been reported at 6% and 40%, respectively. However, data on this issue are scarce, where the picture is further complicated by the difficulty in defining "abuse" within a context where certain coercive measures are legally permitted. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of such abuse and its psychological and workplace-related correlates. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional s

Nurses' experience of nasogastric tube feeding under restraint for Anorexia Nervosa in a psychiatric hospital.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa is a complex mental disorder that has severe physical and psychological consequences, often requiring hospitalisation, and in the most severe cases, patients receive coercive treatment. Among the various nursing tasks associated with encountering these patients, the administration of nasogastric tube feeding under restraint stands out. It is crucial to recognise and address the unique practical and ethical challenges nurses face when caring for adults struggling with severe anorexia nervosa. The aim of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of registered nurs

Qualitative study on the placement of Huntington disease patients in a psychiatric hospital: perceptions of Maltese nurses.

Individuals with adult or juvenile Huntington disease can be cared for within psychiatric hospitals. In this paper, nurses' perceptions about the appropriateness of a psychiatric setting for these patients were explored. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 Maltese nurses involved in the care of these individuals. Their responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three main themes were identified from this study: (i) Huntington disease is not a mental illness; (ii) the lack of specialized staff and equipment within a psychiatric setting; and (iii) a need for alternative care o
