Physical violence becomes the unavoidable proof of existence for the character Shelley in three works by Joyce Carol Oates: the play "Ontological Proofs of Existence," the short story "How I Contemplated the World from the Detroit House of Correction and Began My Life Over Again," and the novel Wonderland. Why does Shelley need such physical violence as her only proof of existence? What factors in the construction of her identity have led to this rather grim choice? Psychoanalysis provides a useful tool for understanding Shelley's character, a character that comes out to the reader, in the thr

To determine the demographics, DSM-III-R disorders diagnosed, indications used in recommending psychoanalysis, previous treatment histories, use of medication, and length of treatment in patients in psychoanalysis in the U.S., Canada, and Australia, a mail survey of practice was sent to every other active member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and every member of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society. This supplemented an earlier survey sent to all Ontario psychoanalysts. The response rates were 40.1 % (n = 342) for the U.S., 67.2% (n = 117) for Canada, and 73.9% (n = 51) for Aust

A key moment in the history of psychiatry occurred during Charcot's time at La Salpêtriere. Though his studies on hysteria and hypnotism, the founder of neurology inspired the work of two of his alumni: a Viennese Nervenartz and a French philosopher interested in the dissociation of personality. Even though neither of them was originally an alienist, their respective work allowed the field of neurosis--then belonging to internal medicine--to pass to psychiatry. The parallel lives of these frères enemis, both of whom were treated differently by fame, developed inside a very complex cultural and

On Tuesday April 21, 1896, Freud gave a lecture to the Viennese medical community arguing that "hysteria," as it was then known, was caused by memories of actual physical and sexual abuse suffered in childhood. Freud rightly felt that he had made a major discovery about the science of hysteria, of psychotherapy, and of the mind. However, his idea was ridiculed. Freud's reaction to his detractors was swift: "They can go to hell." Freud withdrew "into a cocoon." When he emerged a year later, he brought with him a new science-the "science" of psychoanalysis, which for all its creativity and imagi

Blackman (2025) provided an instructive developmental stage perspective on the psychoanalytic supervision process. But other highly instructive developmental supervision perspectives-created outside the borders of psychoanalytic ideology-have largely been ignored within the psychoanalytic supervision literature. In this complementary comment, I introduce and consider some of those often-unconsidered pan-theoretical developmental supervision models and their additive value for psychoanalytic supervision, with special emphasis being placed on the beginner/novice phase supervisee.

'On narcissism: An introduction' constitutes a turning point in psychoanalysis. Although narcissism is a concept which has not been explicitly referred to by many important thinkers for decades, it could be said that there is no paper written in psychoanalysis since Freud that does not implicitly take into account the modifications in thinking that the work brought about. In this paper, the author contrasts two types of narcissistic configurations: in the first, the intolerance of the other is dealt with by expulsion and violence; in the second, by withdrawal. The author contrasts patients who

This study is a continuation of an article that was published in the previous issue of The American Journal of Psychoanalysis (Volume 66, Number 3, September 2006). The case of Helen is illustrated in terms of the analysand's developmental mourning, countertransference, interiority, antilibidinal ego, and transformation of aggression into self-agency.

Psychobiography of the early 20th century generally developed in Western Europe and primarily in the spirit of psychoanalysis. The history of this discipline and its early works creates a rather monolithic picture that is absent of representatives of Eastern countries or alternative theories. Articles, monographs, and scientific journals constantly construct their own (i.e., Western) world of research in this field. Using the example of one of the psychological-philosophical schools of Eastern Europe, the Lvov-Warsaw School, I attempt to demonstrate that its representatives conducted original

"Pluralism" makes it difficult for psychoanalysts to know how far what they do in their consulting rooms is different or not to what others who call themselves psychoanalysts do. A consequence is that it is now hard for "psychoanalysts in training" to know what they are supposed to do, if they want to practice "psychoanalysis." What will a psychoanalytic training give you that other therapists don't have? This paper responds to these questions and the challenge Alan Sugarman has posed by suggesting a solution is available. In the age of pluralism, Institutes can plausibly provide high-quality

An examination of Breuer's treatment of Anna O. illustrates some of the controversies surrounding the recent rise of case reports of multiple personality disorder. Anna O., the first patient of the cathartic method, psychoanalysis, and dynamic psychiatry, fits current criteria for multiple personality disorder. Breuer's treatment, however, may have contributed to her states of absence; the timing, type, and intensity of Breuer's interventions make it possible that he unwittingly encouraged and amplified Anna's dissociations, reified her ego fragments, and then explained Anna's symptoms with th

Relative to nosological classification and therapeutic strategies essential Blepharospasm is discussed controversially in Neurology, Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, and other related branches. From an integrative point of view the clinical symptomatic is a result of psycho-social factors as well as organic factors. Two own cases are reported. The diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic core problems are discussed.

This article, a posthumous presentation of a work in progress of Walter Bonime, one of the maverick thinkers of psychoanalysis of the 20th century, gives us a clear picture of a step-by-step use of feelings in dreams to facilitate the working through process in psychoanalysis. Through a series of dreams occurring during a finite period of the working through process the author shows us how he utilizes the feelings in the dreams to facilitate associations. By connecting past dreams with the actual one being discussed plus writing about his own associations to present and past dreams, while usin

"Concrete" patients manifest resistance to interpretation per se. Their apparently primitive thinking is the result of complex psychodynamics, explicable in terms of the mechanisms of wish fulfillment and a revised theory of fetishism. The general thesis is that an unconscious equation of differentiation with overwhelming tension leads to a global process of defense against the differentiating function of the analytic frame. The wider implications of this theory can be integrated with Freud's mostly unknown late attempt to generalize the theory of fetishism.

This column presents a first draft of the Psychotherapy Selection Algorithm (PSA 1.0), developed by a workgroup of the American Psychoanalytic Association. The goal of PSA 1.0 is to address bias in psychotherapy selection and to reexamine treatment selection so that it is based on evidence that includes the effectiveness and efficacy of psychodynamic therapy and psychoanalysis.

The current state psychoanalytic training is marked by excessive diversity, with different approaches and practices often opposed. Huge theoretical differences find common ground under the umbrella of pluralism, creating serious challenges and impediments for educators, supervisors and mentors, affecting the training enterprise and reshaping the future of psychoanalysis. Rather than joining the controversies and arguing what is right or wrong, this paper attempts to define choice-points that underpin this diversity and the consequences of the positions taken on them. The authors argue that con

The question of how the next generation of psychoanalysts can best be trained is as old as psychoanalysis itself. Currently, there is intense debate within the IPA regarding whether and how teleanalysis should be integrated into psychoanalytic training. The IPA Board has approached the Research Committee (RC) to launch a systematic research project to investigate this question. The RC proposed conducting an action research project. Action Research (AR)-in contrast to "traditional research"-emphasizes the processual nature of insights gained through a professionally facilitated exchange between
