Spatiotemporal characteristics of the neural representation of event concepts.

Events are a fundamentally important part of our understanding of the world. How lexical concepts denoting events are represented in the brain remains controversial. We conducted two experiments using event and object nouns matched on a range of psycholinguistic variables, including concreteness, to examine spatial and temporal characteristics of event concepts. Both experiments used magnitude and valence tasks on event and object nouns. The fMRI experiment revealed a distributed set of regions for events, including the angular gyrus, anterior temporal lobe, and posterior cingulate across task

Inner Speech: Development, Cognitive Functions, Phenomenology, and Neurobiology.

Inner speech-also known as covert speech or verbal thinking-has been implicated in theories of cognitive development, speech monitoring, executive function, and psychopathology. Despite a growing body of knowledge on its phenomenology, development, and function, approaches to the scientific study of inner speech have remained diffuse and largely unintegrated. This review examines prominent theoretical approaches to inner speech and methodological challenges in its study, before reviewing current evidence on inner speech in children and adults from both typical and atypical populations. Dimensional and categorical emotional ratings of Russian nouns: The ENRuN-2 database.

Databases with emotional ratings of words are essential for studying emotional information processing in psychology, psycholinguistics, neuroscience, and related disciplines. The emotional content of stimuli is traditionally described within two approaches: dimensional (rating words on continuous scales such as valence and arousal) and categorical (rating associations of words with discrete emotion categories). Databases with emotional ratings of words have been developed for various languages, but only a few integrate both approaches. The present study introduces the first large database with

Modeling stimulus variation in three common implicit attitude tasks.

We explored the consequences of ignoring the sampling variation due to stimuli in the domain of implicit attitudes. A large literature in psycholinguistics has examined the statistical treatment of random stimulus materials, but the recommendations from this literature have not been applied to the social psychological literature on implicit attitudes. This is partly because of inherent complications in applying crossed random-effect models to some of the most common implicit attitude tasks, and partly because no work to date has demonstrated that random stimulus variation is in fact consequent

Identification of the regions involved in phonological assembly using a novel paradigm.

Here we adopt a novel strategy to investigate phonological assembly. Participants performed a visual lexical decision task in English in which the letters in words and letterstrings were delivered either sequentially (promoting phonological assembly) or simultaneously (not promoting phonological assembly). A region of interest analysis confirmed that regions previously associated with phonological assembly, in studies contrasting different word types (e.g. words versus pseudowords), were also identified using our novel task that controls for a number of confounding variables. Specifically, the

Dyslexia as disability or handicap: when does vocabulary matter?

General cognitive ability is still a factor in current definitions of dyslexia despite two decades of research showing little or no relevance to the nature of dyslexia. This article suggests one reason why this may be so. The suggestion is based on a distinction between dyslexia as a disability (poor ability)-as it is viewed and explained by psycholinguistic and neuropsychological research-and dyslexia seen as a handicap (the consequences of a poor ability) in the educational world. While general knowledge and ability may be irrelevant to the nature of dyslexia as a disability, general knowled

Second language learning difficulties in Chinese children with dyslexia: what are the reading-related cognitive skills that contribute to English and Chinese word reading?

This study examined the relations between reading-related cognitive skills and word reading development of Chinese children with dyslexia in their Chinese language (L1) and in English (L2). A total of 84 bilingual children-28 with dyslexia, 28 chronological age (CA) controls, and 28 reading-level (RL) controls-participated and were administered measures of word reading, rapid naming, visual-orthographic skills, and phonological and morphological awareness in both L1 and L2. Children with dyslexia showed weaker performance than CA controls in both languages and had more difficulties in phonolog

Functional MRI comparison between reading ideographic and phonographic scripts of one language.

Brain activation during reading of phonographic (Hangul) and ideographic (Hanja) words is compared using functional MRI by taking advantage of the bi-scriptal system of the Korean language. To examine the psycholinguistic difference, i.e., phonographic vs. ideographic, separately from other differences due to Hanja being a secondary script, we made a control comparison between Hangul and the English alphabet, another phonographic and secondary script. Interaction analysis between the two comparisons revealed that the right fusiform gyrus and adjacent temporo-occipital region, among others, see

Temporal lobe asymmetry and dyslexia: an in vivo study using MRI.

Three measures of the right and left temporal lobes were taken with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in groups of dyslexics (N = 17), retarded readers (N = 6), and normal controls (N = 12). The most pronounced differences among the groups were found with measures on coronal slices of the cross sectional area of the temporal cortex with subcortical white matter--in particular lateral to insula. While most of the normal and the retarded readers (13 of 18) had left asymmetry (left area larger than right), most of the dyslexics (14 of 17) had symmetry or right asymmetry. The degree of left asymmet

What Language Disorders Reveal About the Mechanisms of Morphological Processing.

We addressed an understudied topic in the literature of language disorders, that is, processing of derivational morphology, a domain which requires integration of semantic and syntactic knowledge. Current psycholinguistic literature suggests that word processing involves morpheme recognition, which occurs immediately upon encountering a complex word. Subsequent processes take place in order to interpret the combination of stem and affix. We investigated the abilities of individuals with agrammatic (PPA-G) and logopenic (PPA-L) variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and individuals with

Classifier Effect Masked by Taxonomic Relations: Through the Lens of a Similarity Judgment Task.

Classifiers, as a reference-tracking device of nouns, have caught much research attention over the past two decades. Beyond their grammatical function, classifiers are unique in their semantic association with the internal properties of head nouns, which raises questions about the relationship between language and cognition. Previous research reported a classifier effect (e.g., Saalbach and Imai in Lang Cogn Processes 27(3):381-428, 2012; Speed et al. in J Exp Psychol Learn Memory Cogn 7(4):625-640, 2021), with classifier speakers (vs. non-classifier speakers) showing greater sensitivity to pa

Action and perception in literacy: A common-code for spelling and reading.

There is strong evidence that reading and spelling in alphabetical scripts depend on a shared representation (common-coding). However, computational models usually treat the two skills separately, producing a wide variety of proposals as to how the identity and position of letters is represented. This article treats reading and spelling in terms of the common-coding hypothesis for perception-action coupling. Empirical evidence for common representations in spelling-reading is reviewed. A novel version of the Start-End Competitive Queuing (SE-CQ) spelling model is introduced, and tested against

What Reading Disability? Evidence for Multiple Latent Profiles of Struggling Readers in a Large Russian Sibpair Sample With at Least One Sibling at Risk for Reading Difficulties.

In this study, we performed a latent profile analysis of reading and related skills in a large ( n = 733) sibpair sample of Russian readers at risk for reading difficulties. The analysis suggested the presence of seven latent profiles, of which two were characterized by relatively high performance on measures of spelling and reading comprehension and the remaining five included severely as well as moderately affected readers with deficits in the domains of phonological, orthographic, and morphological processing. The results suggest that the development and manifestation of reading difficultie

Stuttering, cluttering, and phonological complexity: case studies.

UNLABELLED: The phonological complexity of dysfluencies in those who clutter and/or stutter may help us better understand phonetic factors in these two types of fluency disorders. In this preliminary investigation, cases were three 14-year-old males, diagnosed as a Stutterer, a Clutterer, and a Stutterer-Clutterer. Spontaneous speech samples were transcribed, coded for dysfluent words which were then matched to fluent words on grammatical class (i.e., function vs. content), number of syllables and word familiarity. An Index of Phonological Complexity was determined per word, and word frequency

Language beyond action.

The discovery of mirror neurons in macaques and of a similar system in humans has provided a new and fertile neurobiological ground for rooting a variety of cognitive faculties. Automatic sensorimotor resonance has been invoked as the key elementary process accounting for disparate (dys)functions, like imitation, ideomotor apraxia, autism, and schizophrenia. In this paper, we provide a critical appraisal of three of these claims that deal with the relationship between language and the motor system. Does language comprehension require the motor system? Was there an evolutionary switch from manu

Not that cloze: Sentence constraint is influenced by language and language dominance.

In the fields of language processing and prediction, cloze tests are used to establish sentence constraint norms. The validity of cloze test results depends heavily on how closely the pre-test population matches the main study population, and yet there is limited evidence on how sociolinguistic variables may influence sentence constraint. Here, we investigate how language and language dominance influence sentence constraint at the lexical level by conducting a cloze test across different language groups and comparing response entropy. In Analysis 1, sentence constraint was similarly high for S

Modeling complex narrative memory via sentence recognition: A marriage of distributional semantic models and an episodic model (MINERVA 2).

Recent research has integrated representations from distributional semantic models (DSMs) with traditional episodic memory models. While these integrated frameworks show promise in modeling single-word recognition, their applicability to the recognition of full sentences-particularly those embedded in complex narrative contexts-remains tentative. In this study, participants read short narratives and completed an OLD/NEW sentence recognition task, administered either immediately or after a delay of >10 hours. The recognition test contained four types of sentence probes: verbatim (matching the n

Productivity matters for the neural processing of novel words, but not existing ones.

Every day, we are likely to encounter novel words. We might even make those ourselves from familiar parts of words we know, creating something new and understandable, e.g., wordify, grantology. However, some combinations of these familiar parts will yield words we are more likely to use: berater seems better than penciler or plantist. This depends on the productivity of the words' parts and how they combine: some suffixes, like -er in dreamer, are very often used to make a new word, reinforcing their use in more novel words. When encountering a novel word, how does the productivity of its stem

Methodologies for assessing morphosyntactic ability in people with Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The detection and description of language impairments in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's Disease (AD) play an important role in research, clinical diagnosis and intervention. Various methodological protocols have been implemented for the assessment of morphosyntactic abilities in AD; narrative discourse elicitation tasks and structured experimental tasks for production, offline and online structured experimental tasks for comprehension. Very few studies implement and compare different methodological protocols; thus, little is known about the advantages and disadvantages
