Rated casemix of general practitioner referrals to practice counsellors and clinical psychologists: A retrospective survey of a year's caseload.

Although evidence-based guidelines are beginning to be produced as to which psychological therapies might be appropriate for which patients, little is known about how general medical practitioners (GPs) in practice distribute referrals between different psychological therapy services. In a retrospective survey, 19 practice counsellors and 10 clinical psychologists from the same geographical area rated a year's caseload of GP referrals using identical data collection methods. Rated casemix was found to be broadly similar, although practice counsellors rated relationship and bereavement problems

Impact of a manualized multifocal perinatal home-visiting program using psychologists on postnatal depression: the CAPEDP randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Postnatal maternal depression (PND) is a significant risk factor for infant mental health. Although often targeted alongside other factors in perinatal home-visiting programs with vulnerable families, little impact on PND has been observed. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the impact on PND symptomatology of a multifocal perinatal home-visiting intervention using psychologists in a sample of women presenting risk factors associated with infant mental health difficulties. METHODS: 440 primiparous women were recruited at their seventh month of pregnancy. All were future first-time moth

When You Watch Your Team Fall Apart - Coaches' and Sport Psychologists' Perceptions on Causes of Collective Sport Team Collapse.

Collective team collapse occurs when multiple players of a sport team experience a sudden and extreme underperformance within a game and are unable to return to their initial performance level. The occurrence of such a team collapse event commonly leads to the loss of the game or championship. A recent study investigated athletes' perceptions of the phenomenon and proposed a process model of causes of collective sport team collapse. The main goal of this study was to apply this process model to the data collected from coaches and sport psychologists. A further goal was to explore differences i

Impact of an auditory hallucinations simulation on trainee and newly qualified clinical psychologists: A mixed-methods cross-sectional study.

Simulation training is an effective teaching tool enabling learners to gain a subjective understanding of a range of skills. Our aim in this study was to pilot and evaluate a newly designed simulation of auditory hallucinations as a future training tool for clinicians. This was a mixed-methods study in two parts. In Phase 1, trainee and qualified clinical psychologists (N = 25) attended the London-based immersive art exhibition, Altered States of Consciousness, which included an auditory hallucinations simulation. The exhibition aimed to improve understanding of what it feels like to hear voic

Perceptions of bias and credibility of male and female clinical psychologist and psychiatrist expert witnesses presenting clinical information in the courtroom.

Expert witness credentials and gender have independently been shown to influence jurors' perceptions of expert witness credibility and legal decision-making. This study examined how manipulations of expert witness gender (Male/Female) and profession (Consultant Clinical Psychologist/Consultant Psychiatrist) together affected mock jurors' perceptions of expert witness credibility, judgements, and decision-making. Mock jurors (N = 182; 80.9 % were White) were recruited from England and Wales and were randomly assigned to watch a video-recorded mock expert witness testimony. Participants rated th

Psychologists' experience of working with people who hear voices and their views on the idea of voice simulation training: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Research indicates psychologists typically lack subjective understanding of voice hearing. Voice hearing simulation training has potential to improve understanding, empathy and confidence among clinicians, but psychologists have had limited input into its development. This study investigated psychologists' and a psychotherapist's clinical experience of working with people who hear voices and their views and recommendations for voice hearing simulation training. DESIGN: This was a qualitative study. METHODS: Clinical psychologists and one psychotherapist (N = 17) participated in s

Psychologist attitudes towards disclosure and believability of childhood sexual abuse: Can biases affect perception, judgement, and action?

BACKGROUND: The perception of CSA disclosure belief is critical to long-term outcomes for CSA survivors. Despite disclosures often occurring in clinical settings CSA survivors do not always report a sense of clinician belief in response to their disclosure. Ascertaining the factors that influence clinician belief is essential to improving outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether language (i.e., word choice to describe abuse) and ongoing relationship status with a perpetrator impact perceptions of CSA belief amongst psychologists. METHODS: This 2 × 2 within subject's study examined re

The effects of gender, personal trauma history and memory continuity on the believability of child sexual abuse disclosure among psychologists.

Gender, a personal history of trauma and attitudes towards continuous vs recovered memories of abuse significantly impact the believability of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) disclosures in community samples. Yet, whether these variables influence the believability of CSA disclosure and subsequent clinical decisions made by practicing psychologists is underexplored. A vignette of trauma disclosure from a hypothetical adult client was presented via an online survey to 292 registered psychologists. Participants rated the believability of the disclosure, answered an open-ended item regarding treatment p

Non-psychologist practitioners' views of cognitive assessment reports: An evaluation of a learning disability child and adolescent mental health service.

This report details a service evaluation for a learning disability child and adolescent mental health service. The project aimed to explore nonpsychologist healthcare professionals' views of the accessibility and utility of cognitive assessment reports produced in the service. Semistructured interviews were conducted with eight healthcare professionals. Thematic analysis identified three themes: value of reports, readability, and acknowledging multiple audiences, each with supplementary subthemes. The following were recommended: shorter reports; simpler language; examples and recommendations p

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder identification in Australia: A qualitative analysis of perspectives from psychologists and individuals with lived and living experience.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). In Australia, there are several barriers to assessment, including a limited number of FASD-informed clinicians. This study aimed to understand the perspectives of psychologists, parents, caregivers, and adults with FASD on the current assessment process, as well as methods to improve FASD training and universal screening of PAE. METHODS: Two groups of (1) psychologists and (2) parents, caregivers, and adults with FASD were interviewed about their experiences of

The combination of feedback and modeling in online simulation training of child sexual abuse interviews improves interview quality in clinical psychologists.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown the effectiveness of simulation training using avatars paired with feedback in improving child sexual abuse interview quality. However, it has room for improvement. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine if the combination of two interventions, feedback and modeling, would further improve interview quality compared to either intervention alone. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-two clinical psychologists were randomly assigned to a feedback, modeling, or the combination of feedback and modeling group. METHODS: The participants conducted five simulated chi

Does patient reluctance towards exposure and psychologists' attitudes about evidence based practice influence treatment recommendations for panic disorder? An experimental investigation.

This study examined the effects of patient reluctance towards exposure on practitioners' subsequent treatment recommendations. Participants (N=236) were doctoral level psychologists who received a vignette of a patient with panic disorder, which either did (experimental group) or did not (control group) mention patient reluctance towards exposure. Evidence Based Practice (EBP) attitudes were also assessed and taken into account. A significant main effect of reluctance, averaged across all levels of EBP attitudes, and theoretical orientations was obtained (OR=2.85, 95% CI=[1.51, 5.39], p=0.001,

Use of Psychotropic Medications and Visits to Psychiatrists and Psychologists among Individuals with Nonsyndromic Oral Clefts: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Oral clefts (OCs) are among the most common congenital malformations and can have a large impact on the life of the affected individual. Research findings regarding the psychological and psychosocial consequences of OC are inconclusive. METHODS: Using Danish nationwide registers, we investigated redeemed prescriptions of psychotropic medication during 1996 to 2012 and visits to psychiatrists and psychologists during 1996 to 2011 among individuals born with nonsyndromic OC in Denmark between 1936 and 2009 and a comparison cohort of individuals without OC. Use and evaluation of psychological interventions in specialist palliative care settings: results of a national online survey with psychologists and psycho-oncologists.

BACKGROUND: Psychologists play a key role as part of the multiprofessional palliative care team. Meaning-, dignity-centred and existential intervention approaches are designed to preserve dignity, strengthen the sense of meaning and alleviate existential distress at the end of life. However, little is known about psychological interventions used in caring for palliative patients and their relatives. This study aims to describe which psychological interventions are used in palliative care, and to what extent professional experience (years working as a psychologist/psycho-oncologist in a palliat

Barriers to the use of exposure therapy by psychologists treating anxiety, obsessive-compuslive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder in an Australian sample.

BACGROUND: Exposure therapy is a core component of the evidence-based treatment of anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite this, many clinicians fail to use exposure therapy in clinical practice, with research highlighting a number of potential barriers. Those findings raise serious concerns regarding the effective dissemination and delivery of evidence-based treatments that in turn have a major impact on client care and cost-effectiveness of psychological interventions. AIMS: The present study aims to examine barriers to the use of expo

[A Questionnaire-based Study of Child Psychiatrists and Clinical Psychologists Regarding and Support for Children with Gender Identity Disorder and Sexual Problems].

In 2010, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan strongly recommended that students with gender identity disorder (GID) who had behavioral health concerns should consult a professional in their schools. Furthermore, in 2015, MEXT subsequently announced that it is important for sexual minority students, including students with GID, to receive more support from professionals through cooperation with medical institutions. However, there has been no nationwide clinical research done on sexual minority youth, so little is known about how to optimally care
