Developmental autoethnography (DAE) in theory and practice.

This article introduces a novel approach within the autoethnographic landscape, 'developmental autoethnography' (DAE), presently aimed as a complementary tool in therapy using ThePosAE. While ThePosAE has its purpose towards the future, DAE is intended as an archaeological method, which goes backwards, layer by layer, in order to examine why certain senses and feelings are still present in later life, although they may have their origin in childhood. The practical part of DAE is borrowed from narrative autoethnography (AE), i.e. writing one's story, either alone or together with a therapist or

Interpreting psychological resilience in young African American women: a multilevel socioecological framework.

Resilience theory emphasizes that adaptive capacity must be understood in relation to adversity and the resources available for adaptation. However, public health research primarily interprets psychological resilience measures as indicators of individual adaptive capacity, with limited integration of sociological, historical, and developmental context. Such narrow interpretations of resilience may be especially consequential for young African American women, who experience disproportionately high exposure to stressors shaped by socioecological structures. This perspective proposes a socioecolo

Seed Sown Outside Its Proper Soil: Rethinking Nature and Nurture from Dante to Developmental Science.

Scientific articles typically present research as a coherent sequence of hypotheses, methods, and findings, leaving little room for the intellectual journey that precedes publication. This article inaugurates Behind the Scenes, a new feature of The Journal of Genetic Psychology that explores the ideas, challenges, unexpected discoveries, and critical decisions that shape scientific research beyond the published manuscript. Inspired by Dante Alighieri's reflection on the interplay between innate predispositions and environmental influences in Paradiso VIII, we introduce an interview with Dr Xia

Ketamine counteracts sevoflurane-induced depressive-like behavior and synaptic plasticity impairments through the adenosine A2A receptor/ERK pathway in rats.

Ketamine is an ionic glutamic acid N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist commonly used in clinical anesthesia, and its rapid and lasting antidepressant effect has stimulated great interest in psychology research. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying its antidepressant action are still undetermined. Sevoflurane exposure early in life might induce developmental neurotoxicity and mood disorders. In this study, we evaluated the effect of ketamine against sevoflurane-induced depressive-like behavior and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Here, we reported that A2AR protein expr

Critical Review on the Development and Evolution of Beat Perception.

Beat perception-the ability to extract a regular pulse from rhythmic sequences-is a foundational component of human musicality and a key mechanism supporting synchronization, dance, and collective music-making. Research across neuroscience, developmental psychology, and comparative cognition demonstrates that beat processing exhibits four defining characteristics: it is near-universal across human cultures, emerges spontaneously in early development, engages domain-specific predictive timing mechanisms, and appears rare across species. Neurophysiological evidence indicates that newborns respon

[Developmental problems in young adults suffering from mental illness: results from an in-depth interview study].

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at investigating the impact of mental illness on the general psycho-social development of young adults. METHODS: Results from an in-depth interview study with 16 young adults (20 to 31 years old) suffering from mental illness are presented. Particularly, illness-related issues were explored from the perspective of developmental psychology. RESULTS: Coping with typical developmental tasks of early adulthood (e. g. autonomy; intimate relationships; vocational training) is impeded. At the same time, young patients wish as much normality as possible in their daily lif

Neurology of developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia was until recently considered to belong solely in the domain of educational psychology. With the advent of better theories on language and reading, and better methods for assessing the structure and function of living human brains and for determining genetic transmission, dyslexia is now poised to become a focal concern of cognitive neuroscience, neurology, and genetic research. Still unresolved are questions relating to how much a reading disability represents a normal variation or a separate pathological entity, and whether the cognitive disorder is primarily cognitive

Inhibitory deficits in Tourette's syndrome.

A developmental approach to the study of psychopathology can broaden understanding of a wide variety of complex psychological disorders. This article reviews research on Tourette's syndrome (TS), a developmental disorder characterized by unwanted motor and vocal tics. Over the past decade, knowledge of the neurobiology and pathophysiology of TS has progressed rapidly. The application of brain imaging techniques, primarily magnetic resonance imaging, to the study of Tourette's has increased knowledge of structural and functional deficits in brain areas associated with behavioral and psychologic

Interrelationship of substance use and psychological distress over the life course among a cohort of urban African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Substance use and psychological problems are major public health issues because of their high prevalence, co-occurrence, clustering in socio-economically disadvantaged groups, and serious consequences. However, their interrelationship over time is not well understood. METHODS: This study identifies and compares the developmental epidemiology from age 6 to 42 of substance use and psychological distress in a population of African American men and women. Data come from the Woodlawn study, a longitudinal study of an urban community cohort followed since 1966. We use structural equatio

Dyslexia, the Amsterdam Way.

The current aim is to illustrate our research on dyslexia conducted at the Developmental Psychology section of the Department of Psychology, University of Amsterdam, in collaboration with the nationwide IWAL institute for learning disabilities (now RID). The collaborative efforts are institutionalized in the Rudolf Berlin Center. The first series of studies aimed at furthering the understanding of dyslexia using a gamified tool based on an artificial script. Behavioral measures were augmented with diffusion modeling in one study, and indices derived from the electroencephalogram were used in o

Emotional Brain Development: Neurobiological Indicators from Fetus Through Toddlerhood.

The maturation of brain regions involved in emotion regulation-particularly the amygdala and prefrontal cortex-from fetal life to age two is a dynamic process shaped by genetic and environmental factors. Early experiences, especially responsive caregiving, promote the growth of neural circuits supporting emotional expression and regulation. In contrast, early adversity such as neglect or chronic stress may disrupt these circuits and increase vulnerability to emotional difficulties. Elevated levels of placental CRH are linked to alterations in fetal brain development related to emotion. Neurode

Hostile attribution biases for relationally provocative situations and event-related potentials.

This exploratory study investigates how hostile attribution biases for relationally provocative situations may be related to neurocognitive processing using the P300 event-related potential. Participants were 112 (45 women) emerging adults enrolled in a large, public university in upstate New York. Participants completed self-report measures on relational aggression and hostile attribution biases and performed an auditory perseveration task to elicit the P300. It was found that hostile attribution biases for relational provocation situations was associated with a larger P300 amplitude above an

Modes: Cohesive personality states and their interrelationships as organizing concepts in psychopathology.

We propose a transdiagnostic approach that centers on modes, state-like manifestations of personality that function as cohesive organizational units. Modes are characterized by specific profiles of affects, behaviors, cognitions, and desires that tend to be coactivated. Each mode is typically experienced as having its own distinct experiential and agentic qualities. A mode-based approach to psychopathology builds on recent analytic and methodological developments which demonstrate the value of modeling personality states dynamically, as well as on longstanding theoretical and empirical traditi

An examination of three methods of psychodynamic formulation based on the same videotaped interview.

While psychodynamic theory and therapy are approaching their centennial, the science of psychodynamics is still in an earlier developmental stage. Any scientific field generates the most controversy and excitement when it is still developing. For psychodynamic psychology this means that its basic units of observation as well as its rules for justifying clinical inference in formulating and testing dynamic hypotheses require more development. In short, we are still evaluating different methods for both discovering and validating psychodynamic propositions. This is especially true for central fe

Violence and Abuse in Competitive Sports.

Violence and abuse in competitive sports, such as physical and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect and sexual abuse, affect children, adolescents and adults alike and lead to severe physical, psychological and social consequences. In current medical and educational care concepts of athletes, there is a lack of consistent integration of sports/psychiatric, clinical psychological and psychotherapeutic, developmental pediatric and developmental psychological expertise. Problem areas arise from fine lines between harassment, non-physical and physical violence. The present position pape

Navigating adolescence with a chronic health condition: a perspective on the psychological effects of HAIR-AN syndrome on adolescent girls.

HAIR-AN syndrome is a subphenotype of polycystic ovary syndrome and is characterized by acne, obesity, hirsutism, and acanthosis nigricans. It usually manifests in early adolescence, a time of significant developmental change in females across physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains. We contend that adolescent development for females is difficult, even in the best of circumstances, and having a chronic health condition, like HAIR-AN syndrome, will likely impact the afflicted individual's development and psychological well-being. While many researchers have discussed the long-term he

Expansion and Constraint in Freud's Contribution to Social Theory: Discussion of Nancy Chodorow's "Freud in his Psychosocial Generation: Durkheim, Simmel, Weber, and Du Bois".

This essay is an appreciation of the life and work of Nancy Chodorow, one of the most influential and insightful psychoanalytic sociologists of the 20th and 21st Centuries. Her critical feminist analysis-of mothering and gendering in general-integrated Ego Psychology, Object Relations Theory, developmental psychoanalysis, and structural-functional sociology, opening new visions, which she articulated throughout all of her work. That Chodorow was also a practicing analyst further distinguished her from most of her analytically-inflected academic colleagues. In discussing Chodorow's paper, Selig

Brief report: cross-cultural evidence for the heterogeneity of the restricted, repetitive behaviours and interests domain of autism: a Greek study.

Recent studies provide evidence that the Restricted, Repetitive Behaviours, and Interests (RRBI) domain of autism is heterogeneous, consisting of at least two factors: Insistence on Sameness (IS) and Repetitive Sensory and Motor Behaviours and Interests (RSMB) [Cuccaro et al. (Child Psychiatry and Human Development, 34, 3-7, 2003; Szatmari et al. (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 47, 582-590, 2006)]. The main objective of this study was to replicate this two-factor structure in an independent sample of 153 Greek individuals with a diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD).
