Psychometric Evaluation of the PSQI in U.S. College Students.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Examine the psychometric properties of the PSQI in two U.S. college samples. METHODS: Study I assessed convergent and divergent validity in 866 undergraduates who completed a sleep diary, PSQI, and other sleep and psychosocial measures. Study II assessed PSQI insomnia diagnostic accuracy in a separate sample of 147 healthy undergraduates with and without insomnia. RESULTS: The PSQI global score had only moderate convergent validity with sleep diary sleep efficiency (prospective global measure of sleep continuity; r = 0.53), the Insomnia Severity Index (r = 0.63), and fatigu

Sexual concerns of cardiac patients: A psychometric analysis.

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Steinke Sexual Concerns Inventory-General Cardiac Version (SSCI-GCV) and to examine its use across multiple cardiac diagnoses. A sub-analysis of a cross-sectional sample of 205 cardiac patients from the central USA was completed. Our analyses yielded promising evidence that the SSCI-GCV is a reliable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.86) and valid measure of sexual concerns and supported three subscales for this 11-item instrument. Further means testing suggested that participants with a diagnosis of stroke or kidney disease

Psychometric Validation of the Sexual Function Questionnaire in Poland.

Questionnaires diagnosing sexual dysfunctions in women are important tools which can facilitate the diagnosis and therapy of individual female patients. The study is aimed at the adaptation of the Sexual Function Questionnaire, which was designed by Frances H. Quirk and associates for the American population, to Polish conditions (Quirk et al. in J Sex Med 4:469-77, 1). The study group consisted of 143 women aged 20-68 who were receiving gynaecological care and displayed various types of sexual dysfunction (e.g. female sexual arousal disorder, female orgasmic disorder, dyspareunia), or none of

Development and psychometric characteristics of the Dissociation Tension Scale.

The newly developed Dissoziations-Spannungs-Skala (Dissociation Tension Scale; DSS) is a self-rating instrument for the assessment of psychological and somatoform dissociative features (ranging from normal up to pathological) as well as aversive inner tension occurring within the past 7 days. The DSS contains 21 items assessing dissociative symptoms and 1 additional item assessing aversive inner tension. Ratings are made on a time-oriented scale ranging from 0% (never) to 100% (constantly). We measured the psychometric qualities of the DSS in a total of 294 patients and healthy controls. Inter

Psychometric properties of the Pyramids and Palm Trees Test.

The Pyramids and Palm Trees Test (PPT) is a nonverbal measure of semantic memory that has been frequently used in previous aphasia, agnosia, and dementia research. Very little psychometric information regarding the PPT is available. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the PPT in a population of healthy college students. Results indicated that the PPT achieved poor test-retest reliability, failed to obtain adequate internal consistency, and demonstrated poor convergent validity, but showed acceptable discriminant validity. The results of this study sugges

Further psychometric examination of the Tourette's Disorder Scales.

The Tourette's Disorder Scales (Shytle et al., 2003) are parent- (Tourette's Disorder Scales-Parent Rated; TODS-PR) and clinician-rated (Tourette's Disorder Scales-Clinician Rated; TODS-CR) measures that assess tics, obsessions, compulsions, inattention, hyperactivity, aggression, and emotional disturbances among children with tics. Although the TODS-PR/CR are being increasingly used in clinical trials, relatively little psychometric data have been reported. Subjects were 44 children and adolescents recruited in a university tic specialty clinic. Families were administered the TODS-CR and Yale

Psychometric evaluation of the Greek version of the Aggression Questionnaire.

The study assesses the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the Aggression Questionnaire by Buss and Perry in a sample of 760 Greek high school students. This questionnaire has been widely used to study Physical Aggression, Verbal Aggression, Anger, and Hostility. A confirmatory factor analysis of responses showed adequate fit for the original 4-factor model (total variance explained: 68.2%). The analysis also showed satisfactory internal consistency and temporal stability over 6 to 8 weeks. Also, the construct validity, extreme groups' validity, and predictive validity indices were

Combining psychometric and biometric measures of substance use.

This paper examines the need, feasibility, and validity of combining two biometric (urine and saliva) and three self-report (recency, peak quantity, and frequency) measures of substance use for marijuana, cocaine, opioids, and other substances (including alcohol and other drugs). Using data from 337 adults with substance dependence, we used structural equation modeling to demonstrate that these multiple measures are driven by the same underlying factor (substance use) and that no single measure is without error. We then compared the individual measures and several possible combinations of them

The stereotyped behavior scale: psychometric properties and norms.

The Stereotyped Behavior Scale (SBS) is an empirically developed behavior rating scale for adolescents and adults with mental retardation (Rojahn, Tassé & Sturmey, 1997). Since the original publication, one item was deleted and two items were merged, leaving 24 items. In an additional change, severity scales were added to the frequency scales. In this paper, psychometric properties and (relative) norms for the new SBS are presented. In the psychometric study, 45 adults with mental retardation from a residential facility participated. Of these, 15 were selected for high-rates or very severe for

The Brief Social Phobia Scale: a psychometric evaluation.

The Brief Social Phobia Scale (BSPS) is an observer-rated scale designed to assess the characteristic symptoms of social phobia, using three subscales-fear, avoidance, and physiological arousal-which may be combined into a total score. Each of 18 BSPS items is anchored to a 5-point rating scale. Psychometric evaluation of the BSPS in a sample of 275 social-phobia patients yielded a high level of reliability and validity. Test-retest reliability was excellent, as was internal consistency. The fear and avoidance subscales demonstrated highly significant correlations with remaining item totals; h

Emotional considerations in spasmodic dysphonia: psychometric quantification.

Whereas recent research has focused upon neuromotor aspects of spasmodic dysphonia, the disorder has historically been regarded as having a psychogenic basis. Relatively little empirical evidence, however, has been offered either to support or refute that claim. The present study examines emotional characteristics of 18 female spasmodic dysphonic subjects in comparison to matched normal controls across psychometric measures of depression, anxiety, and somatic complaints. Statistically significant differences were noted between groups for all measures and over half of the dysphonic subjects exh

Psychogenic pain and psychological variables: a psychometric study.

A sample of 41 women suffering from psychogenic pain according to DSM-III diagnostic criteria were psychometrically studied, in order to ascertain if they showed specific psychological traits or mechanisms. Type A behavior, extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism and dissimulation and hostility-aggressivity traits were the psychological variables studied both in the pain sample and in a matched control group. Psychogenic pain patients were significantly more neurotic and suspicious and less physically aggressive than healthy subjects and also scored significantly higher in dissimulation, which

Psychometric properties of the postpartum thoughts and behaviors checklist.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has an increased prevalence throughout pregnancy and in the postpartum period relative to non-peripartum periods. While some obsessive-compulsive symptoms in this period present in the same manner to those in non-postpartum OCD, others are more specific to the postpartum period (e.g., obsessions related to sudden infant death syndrome [SIDS]). However, there are few validated scales assessing obsessive-compulsive symptoms during the postpartum period. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Postpartum Thoughts and Behaviors Checklist (PTBC), a
