Multidimensional Assessment of Orthorexia Nervosa: A Case-Control Study Comparing Eating Behavior, Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, Body Mass Index, Psychological Symptoms, and Autonomic Arousal.

Background: The research on orthorexia nervosa (ON) has thoroughly outlined the connection between it and various mental disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorders and eating disorders, in addition to stress. However, research has not considered psychophysical stress and other measures of psychophysical health, such as adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Methods: This cross-sectional and case-control research involved 63 students from the University of Parma, aged between 18 and 49 years. The ORTO-15 questionnaire was utilized to categorize the entire sample into two groups: one with

Functional speech disorders: clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management.

Acquired psychogenic or functional speech disorders are a subtype of functional neurologic disorders. They can mimic organic speech disorders and, although any aspect of speech production can be affected, they manifest most often as dysphonia, stuttering, or prosodic abnormalities. This chapter reviews the prevalence of functional speech disorders, the spectrum of their primary clinical characteristics, and the clues that help distinguish them from organic neurologic diseases affecting the sensorimotor networks involved in speech production. Diagnosis of a speech disorder as functional can be

Fear learning in unmedicated patients with anxiety disorders: a comparison of delay conditioning, fear reversal, and trace conditioning.

Anxiety disorders are common and impairing, yet their underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Fear learning provides a critical translational framework for investigating pathological anxiety, bridging laboratory models and clinical phenomena. Prior studies have been limited by important methodological issues, including the inclusion of non-anxiety diagnoses, high comorbidity, and medication use. Here we examined three forms of fear learning- delay conditioning, fear reversal, and trace conditioning-in unmedicated adults with minimally comorbid primary anxiety disorders (Generaliz

The impact of reinforcement contingencies on AD/HD: a review and theoretical appraisal.

One of the core deficits in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is thought to be an aberrant sensitivity to reinforcement, such as reward and response cost. Twenty-two studies (N=1181 children) employing AD/HD and reinforcement contingencies are reviewed from vantage points: task performance, motivation, and psychophysiology. Results indicate that reinforcement contingencies have a positive impact on task performance and levels of motivation for both children with AD/HD and normal controls. There is evidence that the effect related to task performance is somewhat more prominent in

A comparison of tension headache sufferers and nonpain controls on the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory: an exploratory study with implications for applied psychophysiologists.

Studies that have examined the relationship between personality characteristics and tension headache have arrived at conflicting and, for the most part, negative results. In recent years, a number of investigators have begun examining the relationship between anger and psychophysiological disorders, focusing mostly on anger which is suppressed or held in rather than expressed behaviorally. The present study explored the relationship between anger in 59 tension headache subjects and compared their results to 33 nonpain controls. Materials consisted of the revised research edition of the Spielbe

[PSYCHODERMATOLOGY].

Psychodermatologic disorders are conditions involving an interaction between the mind and the skin. Correlation between psychiatric and dermatological disorders is a highly complex relation considering etiology, diagnostic procedures and treatment. There are three major groups of psychodermatological disorders: psychosomatic (psychophysiologic) disorders, primary psychiatric disorders and secondary psychiatric disorders. Psychosomatic disorders are dermatological diseases which can be exacerbated or worsened by emotional stress, but are not caused directly by stress. Emotional stress can exace

Sexual dysfunction, Part I: Classification, etiology, and pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The sexual dysfunctions are extremely common but are rarely recognized by primary care physicians. They represent inhibitions in the appetitive or psychophysiologic changes that characterize the complete adult sexual response and are classified into four major categories: (1) sexual desire disorders (hypoactive sexual desire, sexual aversion disorder), (2) sexual arousal disorders (female sexual arousal disorder, male erectile dysfunction), (3) orgasmic disorders (inhibited male or female orgasm, premature ejaculation), and (4) sexual pain disorders (dyspareunia, vaginismus). ADHD and schizophrenia phenomenology: visual scanpaths to emotional faces as a potential psychophysiological marker?

Commonalities in the clinical phenomenology and psychopharmacology of ADHD and schizophrenia are reviewed. The potential of psychostimulants to produce psychotic symptoms emphasizes the need for objective psychophysiological distinctions between these disorders. Impaired emotion perception in both disorders is discussed. It is proposed that visual scanpaths to facial expressions of emotion might prove a potentially useful psychophysiological distinction between ADHD and schizophrenia. There is consistent evidence that both facial affect recognition and scanpaths to facial expressions are impai

[The treatment with the antidepressant Lerivon of tension headaches and autonomic crises].

20 patients with vegetative crises (panic attacks) and 20 patients with tension-type headache were treated by Lerivon (tetracyclic antidepressant) administration. The following parameters were investigated: the degree of headache expression according to visual analogous scale, the vegetative crises frequency and depression gravity by means of Spilberg test, the depression intensity by means of Back scale. The areas of different components of contingent negative deviation (CND)-early, late, postimperative negative waves as well as total CND area-were examined either. Both high clinical effects

Michael J. Kozak (1952-2019).

Presents an obituary for Michael J. Kozak (1952-2019). He received his bachelor of arts in psychology in 1974 at the University of Pennsylvania. His research career began in his undergraduate years when he investigated reversing learned helplessness with Martin Seligman. His graduate studies were completed with Peter Lang at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There, he investigated the psychophysiology of emotional imagery processing, guided by Lang's bioinformational theory of emotion. He earned his master of science in psychology in 1978 and his doctor of philosophy in clinical psychology

Intimate partner abuse and PTSD symptomatology: examining mediators and moderators of the abuse-trauma link.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to intimate partner abuse, physiological reactivity, and social support. The authors used structural equation modeling to test social support as a moderator and psychophysiological reactivity and anger as mediators of the relation between abuse and traumatic symptoms among a sample of women reporting psychological abuse, including women reporting both physical violence and no physical violence. Both physical and psychological abuse were related to PTSD symptoms. Whereas physical and psychological abuse were highly correlated, psychological a

Sleep disorders: a selective update.

Recent years have seen significant advances in sleep disorders medicine, including effective treatments for chronic psychophysiological insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome; greater understanding of biological rhythms and of the nature of sleep in depression, including seasonal affective disorder; and the discovery of REM behavior disorder. The author reviews selected developments in the sleep disorders field over the last three years. Developments are presented in the framework of the diagnostic classification of the American Sleep Disorders Association, with emphasis on areas releva

Aetiology and mechanisms of anxiety disorders.

Theories on the aetiology of pathological anxiety abound. A critical review is given of the most influential approaches (e.g. psychoanalytical, "somatogenic", behavioural, psychophysiological and "biological" theories), with emphasis on panic and agoraphobic disorders. Evidence is presented from epidemiological and genetic research and from observations on the course of illness. A surprisingly constant prevalence of anxiety syndromes, and a familial distribution suggesting a pivotal importance of genetic factors, speak in favour of a biological model. The course of illness, however, points to

A review of patients managed at a combined psychodermatology clinic: a Singapore experience.

INTRODUCTION: Recognising and appropriately treating psychosomatic factors in dermatological conditions can have a significant positive impact on the outcomes of patients. Treatment of psychodermatological patients requires a multidisciplinary approach that involves dermatologists, psychiatrists and allied health professionals. METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of patients seen in our psychodermatology liaison conferences from November 2009 to July 2011. We reviewed all the case notes and analysed data such as age, gender, dermatologic and psychiatric diagnoses, treatment and outc

Psychogenic (functional) parkinsonism.

Psychogenic parkinsonism (PP), although often quite disabling, is one of the least commonly reported subtypes of psychogenic movement disorders. There are certain features that help distinguish PP from idiopathic Parkinson's disease, such as abrupt onset, early disability, bilateral shaking and slowness, nondecremental slowness when performing repetitive movements, voluntary resistance against passive movement without cogwheel rigidity, distractibility, "give-way" weakness, stuttering speech, bizarre gait, and a variety of behavioral symptoms. While the diagnosis of PP is clinical, functional

Psychogenic movement disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the progress made in the area of psychogenic movement disorders (PMDs) over the past 2 years, and a simplified classification of diagnostic certainty is proposed that incorporates electrophysiological assessment. RECENT FINDINGS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have demonstrated altered blood flow in conversion disorders that may reflect changes in synaptic activity. Electrophysiological testing shows limitations in distinguishing between psychogenic and organic propriospinal myoclonus and dystonia. Recent evidence cautions against the u

Functional disorders of swallowing.

Swallowing involves complex coordination of the neuromuscular anatomy and physiology of the oropharynx and esophagus, controlled by the enteric and central nervous systems. Dysphagia is classified as either oropharyngeal or esophageal and results from mechanical or structural disturbances. Videofluoroscopy, fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, barium swallow, manometry, and endoscopy are common modalities utilized in diagnosis, but none is as important as a patient's history. Functional dysphagia is a diagnosis of exclusion and is based on Rome criteria. Its mechanism is unknown but
