Although DSM-IV criteria for anxiety disorders include physiological symptoms, these symptoms are evaluated exclusively by verbal report. The current review explores the background for this paradox and tries to demonstrate on theoretical and empirical grounds how it could be resolved, providing new insights about the role of psychophysiological measures in the clinic. The three-systems approach to evaluating anxiety argues that somatic measures as well as verbal and behavioral ones are indispensable. However, the low concordance between these domains of measurement impugns their reliability an

Relationships of neuroleptic dosage and tardive dyskinesia with measures of attentional, information-processing, and psychophysiological dysfunctions in medicated chronic schizophrenics were explored by correlational and stepwise multiple-regression analysis. High neuroleptic dosage was found to be associated with increased reaction time, reduced span of apprehension, low basal skin conductance level, and reduced skin conductance reactivity. Severe abnormal involuntary movements were associated with increased eye-tracking dysfunction, increased scanning eye-movement rate, increased reaction ti

BACKGROUND: Bruxism and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are multifactorial conditions in which cognitive and behavioural traits may play an underrecognised role. Hyperfocus, defined as intense and sustained attentional engagement, has been proposed as a potential driver of heightened sensorimotor activity and pain vulnerability, yet its relevance to bruxism and painful TMD remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: To examine whether hyperfocus is associated with probable bruxism and painful TMD (pTMD), and to determine whether probable bruxism mediates the relationship between hyperfocus and p

Homeostatic balance provides a conceptual foundation for personality, and balance is a key concept in psychotherapy and psychophysiology. For example, both extreme fear and the absence of fear are considered pathological in both psychotherapy and psychophysiology, whereas a moderate, balanced fear response predicts healthier outcomes. In terms of measurement, however, personality is typically measured using a unipolar approach with more extreme scores (typically higher) indicative of better functioning. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether a moderate, balanced approach to me

Infant-mother attachment relationships play a crucial role in shaping children's psychological and physiological well-being. This study examined whether attachment quality at 12 months is associated with infant psychophysiological responses to mild stress at 6 months. Participants were 222 ethnically and socioeconomically diverse mother-infant dyads followed from the third trimester of pregnancy through the infant's first year. At 6 months, dyads participated in a free play session followed by the Face-to-Face Still-Face Paradigm (FFSFP). Infant saliva samples were collected before and after f

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of anxiety stemming from the absence of a smartphone or mobile device, known as nomophobia, has become increasingly prevalent in contemporary society. This condition is particularly pronounced among young adults and is associated with several adverse psychological outcomes, including depression, anxiety, stress, somatic complaints and anxiety- related disorders.
PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the prevalence of nomophobia and its psychopathological correlations.
METHODS: The study sample comprised N = 200 college/university students and working adults in the ag

OBJECTIVE: To determine the features of the psychophysiological response in servicemen with the consequences of combat stress reactions (CSR) within the research paradigm of «predictable-unpredictable threat» (PUT).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 87 male servicemen. Group 1 included healthy military personnel (control group [CG], n=40), Group 2 consisted of combatants with stress-associated non-psychotic disorders (CSR group, n=47): F43.1 (38.3%), F41.2 (29.6%), F44 (19.5%), F41.1 (12.6%). The mean age of the subjects in the CG group was 23.7±2.3 years vs. 23.2±2.3 years in the CSR

The present study aimed to examine changes in psychophysiological arousal from baseline to a stressor phase (reactivity) and from the stressor phase to a second resting phase (recovery) in patients with anxiety disorders. Fifty adult patients with DSM-5 anxiety disorders (panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or social anxiety disorder) and 28 healthy control (HC) participants underwent psychophysiological monitoring including electrocardiogram, respiration rate, electrodermal activity, gastrocnemius electromyograph, and end-tidal CO2 for a 3-min resting phase, a 6-min mild stressor ph

Reduced responsiveness to emotions is hypothesized to contribute to the development of conduct disorder (CD) in children and adolescents. Accordingly, blunted psychophysiological responses to emotions have been observed in boys with CD, but this has never been tested in girls. Therefore, this study compared psychophysiological responses to sadness in girls and boys with and without CD, and different clinical phenotypes of CD: with versus without limited prosocial emotions (LPE), and with versus without comorbid internalizing disorders (INT). Nine-hundred and 27 girls (427 CD, 500 controls) and

Deep breathing exercises are commonly used for several health conditions including pain and hypertension. Various techniques are available to practice deep breathing, whereas possible differential psychophysiological effects have not been investigated. We compared four deep breathing techniques and examined outcomes in blood pressure variability, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, baroreflex function, and emotional state. Healthy adult volunteers performed pursed-lips breathing, left and right unilateral nostril breathing, and deep breathing with an inspiratory threshold load (loaded breathing), al

The present review is concerned with the role of different physiological systems (e.g., skin conductance, heart rate, electromyography, and the eye-bling startle reflex) in understanding heterogeneity in conduct disorder (CD). Four subtyping approaches are considered: age of onset, comorbid psychopathology, callous-unemotional traits, and proactive/reactive aggression. Empirical findings are discussed in terms of distinct theoretical perspectives that aim to explain CD behaviors based on physiological over-arousal, under-arousal, and empathy deficits. According to the studies reviewed, the cal

INTRODUCTION: Relatively little is known about the subjective reactions of women with lifelong vaginismus to erotic stimuli and genital arousal has never been investigated. Reports of maladaptive cognitions and fears regarding sexuality and intercourse suggest that anxiety may interfere with sexual arousal in women with vaginismus.
AIMS: To examine the genital and subjective responses to sexually explicit film stimuli of women with lifelong vaginismus compared with women with lifelong dyspareunia and women with no pain.
METHODS: Forty-five women (15 vaginismus, 15 dyspareunia, and 15 no pain

Pain is a ubiquitous yet highly variable experience. The psychophysiological and genetic factors responsible for this variability remain unresolved. We hypothesised the existence of distinct human pain clusters (PCs) composed of distinct psychophysiological and genetic profiles coupled with differences in the perception and the brain processing of pain. We studied 120 healthy subjects in whom the baseline personality and anxiety traits and the serotonin transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) genotype were measured. Real-time autonomic nervous system parameters and serum cortisol were

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia, a chronic pain syndrome, is often accompanied by psychological distress and increased basal sympathetic tone. In a previous report it was shown that mindfulness-based stress-reduction (MBSR) reduced depressive symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia with gains maintained at two months follow-up (Sephton et al., Arthr Rheum 57:77-85, 2007). This second study explores the effects of MBSR on basal sympathetic (SNS) activation among women with fibromyalgia.
METHODS: Participants (n = 24) responded to a television news appearance, newspaper, and radio advertisements. Effec

OBJECTIVES: Cataplexy is the key symptom of the narcoleptic syndrome. It is usually triggered by emotions, which play an important role in the manifestation and severity of the disease. Accordingly, we compared the psychophysiologic effects on patients with narcolepsy and healthy subjects of processing visual stimuli that have established emotional valences.
METHOD: Eight drug-free patients with narcolepsy with severe cataplexy and 8 controls were studied. Fifty-four color pictures (pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant) selected from the International Affective Picture System were presented on a

The present study delineates a method for the quantification of six hemodynamic reactivity patterns, in response to a laboratory stressor, and examines the psychophysiological correlates of individual differences in these patterns. One hundred and ninety-four young adult men and women participated in rest periods and two laboratory stressors, mental arithmetic and an anger recall interview. Measures were taken of blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output, from which total peripheral resistance was derived, as well as state reports of feelings during the tasks. Six hemodynamic reactor patt

Psychophysiological screening was carried out on 384 consecutive patients with erectile dysfunction of psychogenic or psychogenic-organic origin. Visual sexual stimulation with penile vibration caused a satisfactory erection in roughly 50% of patients. Nonresponders subsequently produced a good penile response with intracavernous injection of vasoactive substance. Orgasm-ejaculation can occur in the absence of a full erection. In such cases subsequent intracavernous injection brought about a (near) full erection. A first intracavernous injection was most effective when combined with visual and

Sixty-five adults diagnosed with "psychophysiologic chronic insomnia" following the criteria of the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers were investigated. They were subdivided into two groups based on whether onset of the insomnia had occurred in childhood or adulthood. Fifty similar-aged patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) were also investigated and served as a contrast group. All subjects were given polygraphic recordings and structured interviews, and all completed sleep questionnaires after reviewing the questions with an investigator. On many indices evaluating subjec
