Functional dyspepsia: are psychosocial factors of relevance?

The pathogenesis of Functional Dyspepsia (FD) remains unclear, appears diverse and is thus inadequately understood. Akin to other functional gastrointestinal disorders, research has demonstrated an association between this common diagnosis and psychosocial factors and psychiatric morbidity. Conceptualising the relevance of these factors within the syndrome of FD requires application of the biopsychosocial model of disease. Using this paradigm, dysregulation of the reciprocal communication between the brain and the gut is central to symptom generation, interpretation and exacerbation. Appreciat

Psychosocial correlates of symptoms in functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Psychosocial factors may influence both symptom generation and reporting in functional dyspepsia. We determined the presence and severity of these factors as well as their relationship to dyspeptic symptoms in patients with functional dyspepsia and healthy subjects. METHODS: A total of 151 consecutive patients with functional dyspepsia referred chiefly from primary care clinics and 90 healthy subjects rated 15 dyspeptic symptoms. Participants completed the Medical Outcomes Study SF-36 and Symptom Checklist-90-revised. RESULTS: Functional dyspepsia patients reported signifi

Psychosocial aspects of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Increased numbers of psychiatric diagnoses and increased levels of psychological distress are seen in the majority of medical clinic patients with gastrointestinal motility disorders. In IBS, psychological symptoms are believed to be comorbid conditions, which do not cause the motility disorder but which do influence the patient's decision to consult a physician. In functional dyspepsia, psychological symptoms are present in many patients, but their role is not known; the available data suggest that psychological symptoms do not predict which patients will consult a physician. Among constipate

Associations Between Child Labour, Child Discipline and Psychosocial Functioning of Children and Adolescents in Laos.

INTRODUCTION: Although the increased risks of child labour and parental discipline on children's psychosocial functioning are well-documented in various settings, there is a paucity of data addressing these associations in Laos. This research aims to investigate the prevalence of child labour and parental discipline and their potential associations with psychosocial difficulties among children and adolescents aged 5-14 years. METHODS: This study employed data from the 2023 Laos Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), a nationally representative cross-sectional dataset. Multivariable binary

Ketogenic diet for pediatric drug-resistant epilepsy: sleep, children's psychosocial functioning, and maternal mental health.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing attention to ketogenic dietary therapy (KDT) for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) in children, research examining its impact on non-seizure outcomes in children and their mothers remains limited. This study examined effects of KDT on sleep quality, children's psychosocial functioning, and maternal mental health. METHODS: This prospective study followed 40 children with DRE and their mothers from baseline to 4 and 12 weeks after KDT initiation. Children's sleep and psychosocial functioning were assessed using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire and the Strengt

Dual vulnerability: Trauma type and burden impact behavioral and psychosocial functioning in children with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-related symptoms can overlap with core symptoms of ADHD. However, there is limited evidence of exploration of how trauma exposure, particularly trauma burden and trauma type, relates to ADHD and whether these associations differ in their impact on psychosocial functioning compared to neurotypical (NT) children. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between trauma exposure, trauma burden and trauma type and ADHD status and to assess whether these factors are differentially associated with behavioral, psychological and social functioning in children with ADHD compared to NT

Emotional maltreatment shapes the relationship between psychosocial functioning and hippocampal structure in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus and amygdala are important limbic structures involved in memory, emotional regulation, and stress response, which are pivotal for social interactions, everyday functioning, and participation in community life. However, the presumably bidirectional relationship between limbic structure and psychosocial functioning-and the potential moderating role of early-life environmental risk factors-remains poorly understood in schizophrenia spectrum (SSD) and mood disorders (MOD). METHODS: Structural 3 T MRI data were collected from SSD (n = 64) and MOD (n = 66) patients as we

Relationship between anhedonia and psychosocial functioning in post-COVID-19 condition: a post-hoc analysis.

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC), also known as "long COVID," is characterized by persistent symptoms, negatively affecting the well-being of individuals with PCC. Anhedonia (i.e. reduced capacity for pleasure) and compromised psychosocial functioning are notable symptoms in those with PCC. We aimed to provide insights to understand the effects of anhedonia and impaired psychosocial functioning of individuals with PCC. METHODS: This post-hoc analysis used data from an 8-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial which evaluated vortioxetine for cognitive deficits in ind

IQ scores among homeless older adolescents: characteristics of intellectual performance and associations with psychosocial functioning.

Intellectual performance and the associations of IQ with the quality of psychosocial functioning were studied in a sample of homeless older adolescents. Fifty homeless older adolescents (ages 16-21) completed the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) and a questionnaire assessing psychosocial functioning and sexual risk factors. The WAIS-R scores were comparable to population means, with performance IQ scores tending to be higher than verbal IQ scores. The IQ was unrelated to the duration of homelessness. Higher IQ scores were significantly correlated with only a minority of the m

Anorexia and bulimia in anorexia nervosa: a study of psychosocial functioning and associated psychiatric symptomatology.

Seventeen fasting patients with anorexia nervosa and 15 who also binged were compared in terms of their psychosocial functioning and associated psychiatric symptomatology, using the Delusions Symptoms and States Inventory (Foulds & Bedford, 1975). Both groups scored very highly on the state of anxiety, depression, and elation sets of the DSSI, but less highly on the compulsive and ruminative symptoms sets and on the phobic dissociative and conversion symptom sets. The bingeing anorexic group was significantly older and heavier than the fasting group and experienced more feelings of self-harm a

Psychosocial factors and perceived severity of functional dyspeptic symptoms: a psychosocial interactionist model.

OBJECTIVE: A psychosocial interactionist model was presented to provide a systematic account of individual differences in perceived functional dyspeptic symptom severity. METHODS: In a population-based survey, 4038 Hong Kong subjects (age 18-80 years) were interviewed. Five hundred ninety interviewees (14.6%) met the diagnostic criteria for functional dyspepsia (FD), and 396 of them participated in this study. RESULTS: Results from multiple regression analyses revealed significant main effects of monitoring, emotional support, and coping flexibility on perceived FD symptom severity. A signif

THE EFFECTS OF THIRD-GENERATION ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS ON THE PSYCHOSOCIAL FUNCTIONING OF PATIENTS WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA.

BACKGROUND: The degree of cognitive impairment and verbal fluency are more important predictors of a patient's social rehabilitation than the severity of negative or positive symptoms. At the same time, researchers have confirmed and rejected linkages between linguistic functioning and certain cognitive functions in various studies. In several cases these correlations were observed, but did not reach any statistical significance. The aim of this study was to investigate and understand the effects of cognitive decline and impaired fluency on the social functioning of patients with schizophrenia

Psychosocial functioning as a mediator between childhood trauma and symptom severity in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: There is empirical evidence that childhood trauma is associated with symptom severity and psychosocial functioning in schizophrenia. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to further elucidate these associations by examining which subdomains of schizophrenic symptoms and psychosocial functioning are associated with childhood trauma. In addition, it should be tested whether the association between childhood trauma and schizophrenic symptoms is mediated by psychosocial functioning. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants of this study were 253 inpatients of five psychiatric hospitals di

Children With Early-Onset Disruptive Behavior: Parental Mental Disorders Predict Poor Psychosocial Functioning in Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Parental mental disorders (MD) and child early-onset disruptive behavior (DB) are well-established risk factors for poor outcomes in adolescence. However, it is not clear whether parental MD increases risk of future maladjustment among children who already display DB. METHOD: Parents of 9-year-old children reported on child DB, whereas a patient registry was used to determine parental MD. At follow-ups at ages 15 (n = 6,319) and 18 (n = 3,068) years, information about various problems were collected via registries, parent-, and self-reports. RESULTS: In the total sample, child DB

Problem behaviour and psychosocial functioning in young children with Williams syndrome: parent and teacher perspectives.

BACKGROUND: There is sparse literature about problem behaviour in young children with Williams syndrome (WS) and little consideration of the perspectives of multiple respondents. METHODS: Problem behaviour of 35 children with WS ages 2 to 6 was examined based on both parent and teacher report using the Achenbach preschool forms. RESULTS: The most prominent areas of difficulty based on both parent and teacher report were attention problems, pervasive developmental problems and emotion reactivity difficulties. Some rater differences were observed; most notably, teachers reported more externali
