UK consensus guidelines for multidisciplinary care of children and young people with achondroplasia: a modified Delphi process.

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia (ACH), the most common skeletal dysplasia, arises from gain-of-function variants in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene. Children with ACH experience lifelong medical, functional and psychosocial challenges requiring coordinated and anticipatory care. Although international guidance exists, the UK lacks national clinical care recommendations specific to its healthcare systems. OBJECTIVE: To develop UK-specific, multidisciplinary clinical recommendations for the care of children and young people (CYP) with ACH. METHODS: The UK Achondroplasia Network develop

Psychosocial Impacts of Huntington's Disease on Individuals, Relatives and Family Systems: A Thematic Synthesis.

Huntington's disease (HD) has prevalent, life-altering consequences for affected individuals, relatives, familial caregivers and systemic functioning. However, the shared psychosocial impacts of HD across family systems are inadequately understood, and a synthesis of evidence regarding these experiences is currently lacking. This thematic synthesis provides an up-to-date integration of qualitative research describing psychological, social and relational difficulties experienced by HD families. A systematic search across PsycINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE and Scopus identified nine qualitative studies.

Family-oriented support in genetic counselling: a scoping review of clinical practice and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Families living with inherited genetic conditions (IGCs) face practical and emotional challenges that affect individual well-being and family relationships. Although genetic counselling recognises the familial nature of genomic risk, support is often limited to patient-led disclosure. This scoping review examined how family-oriented support is conceptualised, delivered, and evaluated within genetic counselling and related psychosocial services. We define family-oriented support as any practice that explicitly considers relatives and family relationships, and systemic family-oriented care as fa

Artificial intelligence in pediatric diabetes: clinical benefits, developmental risks, and ethical challenges.

UNLABELLED: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming both pediatric healthcare and everyday childhood experiences. Children with diabetes represent a unique population at the intersection of medical AI, including automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, clinical decision support tools, and predictive glucose monitoring, and consumer AI, such as chatbots and AI-based educational platforms. This paper examines the benefits, risks, and unresolved dilemmas associated with this dual AI exposure. This narrative review addresses medical and consumer AI applications in pediatric diabetes.

Peer navigation to support psychosocial well-being and HIV treatment among adolescents: A rapid review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa experience poorer outcomes across the HIV care cascade than other age groups because of intersecting developmental, psychosocial and structural barriers. Peer navigation has emerged as a promising strategy to support engagement in care, yet evidence on its effectiveness and implementation for ALHIV remains fragmented. AIM: To synthesise evidence on peer navigation and peer-led psychosocial support interventions for adolescents living with HIV. METHOD: A rapid review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 principles.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on suicide rates.

Multiple lines of evidence indicate that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has profound psychological and social effects. The psychological sequelae of the pandemic will probably persist for months and years to come. Studies indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with distress, anxiety, fear of contagion, depression and insomnia in the general population and among healthcare professionals. Social isolation, anxiety, fear of contagion, uncertainty, chronic stress and economic difficulties may lead to the development or exacerbation of depressive, anxiety, substance use

Sustained type 1 diabetes self-management: Specifying the behaviours involved and their influences.

AIMS: Sustained engagement in type 1 diabetes self-management behaviours is a critical element in achieving improvements in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and minimising risk of complications. Evaluations of self-management programmes, such as Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE), typically find that initial improvements are rarely sustained beyond 12 months. This study identified behaviours involved in sustained type 1 diabetes self-management, their influences and relationships to each other. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted following the first two steps of the Behaviour Chan

Information and Emotional Support Needs of Families Whose Infant Was Diagnosed With SCID Through Newborn Screening.

Background: Now that severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) has been added to newborn screening panels in all 50 states in the U.S., there is a need to develop and disseminate well-designed educational materials to parents who need information to make informed decisions about treatment and care for identified infants. SCID Compass was designed to address this gap. We summarize the results of two needs assessment activities for parents-a journey mapping exercise and online survey-which will inform the development of a website and new resources. Methods: We conducted in-depth interviews with s

Psychosocial and Demographic Characteristics of Children and Adolescents With Headache Presenting for Treatment in a Headache Infusion Center.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of pediatric patients have recurrent headaches, with migraine being the most common headache type. If untreated, migraine may progress to status migrainosus, a debilitating condition of prolonged duration, high pain severity, and significant disability. There is high variability in the treatment of status migrainosus including medications used and treatment setting, which may occur in the emergency room, as an inpatient admission, or, less often, in an outpatient infusion center. The paucity of research on the treatment of status migrainosus is a limitation to tre

Living with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia: A qualitative evidence synthesis of patient, caregiver and practitioner perspectives.

PURPOSE: Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) is an incurable, slow-growing blood cancer requiring lifelong surveillance and episodic treatment. While clinical management is well characterised, the experiences of patients, caregivers, and practitioners remain underexplored. This review aimed to integrate these perspectives. METHODS: A qualitative evidence synthesis was conducted following ENTREQ guidelines. Systematic searches of seven databases and grey literature identified qualitative studies reporting the experiences of patients with CLL, their informal caregivers, and healthcare professio

The systematic development of a complex intervention: HealthMap, an online self-management support program for people with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Despite persistent calls for HIV care to adopt a chronic care approach, few HIV treatment services have been able to establish service arrangements that prioritise self-management. To prevent cardiovascular and other chronic disease outcomes, the HealthMap program aims to enhance routine HIV care with opportunities for self-management support. This paper outlines the systematic process that was used to design and develop the HealthMap program, prior to its evaluation in a cluster-randomised trial. METHODS: Program development, planning and evaluation was informed by the PRECEDE-PR

Rethinking the science-stream advantage in early nursing education. Academic background and psychosocial factors associated with bioscience achievement; a cross-sectional study.

AIM: This study aimed to examine whether academic background and selected psychosocial learning factors were associated with academic achievement in a foundational bioscience course among first-semester nursing students, and to critically re-evaluate the commonly assumed advantage of science-stream education. BACKGROUND: Bioscience subjects are essential yet challenging components of nursing education. Although students from science-stream backgrounds are often assumed to possess an academic advantage, emerging evidence suggests that learning outcomes may be influenced by more complex and con

Identifying age 26 as a threshold in psychosocial risks associated with child maltreatment among first-time mothers: a cross-sectional study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Early pregnancy is associated with increased psychosocial vulnerability, which has been linked to factors associated with child maltreatment. However, previous research has predominantly focused on teenagers, and little is known about whether first-time mothers in their early-to-mid twenties also exhibit elevated psychosocial risks. This observational cross-sectional study aimed to determine whether psychosocial risk factors associated with child maltreatment are more prevalent among first-time mothers aged 17-25 years in Japan, compared with those aged 26 years and older. Shock to the Heart: Psychosocial Implications and Applications of Sudden Cardiac Death in the Young.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although rare, sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the young is a tragic event, having a dramatic impact upon all involved. The psychosocial burden associated with SCD can leave friends, families, and entire communities bereft. With only limited evidence to describe the volatile emotional reactions associated with a young SCD, there is an urgent need for care providers to better understand the psychological complexities and impacts faced by both at-risk individuals and those directly affected by these tragic events. RECENT FINDINGS: Current knowledge of the psychosocial implicati
