PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Few treatments are available for patients with mood disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who have already failed multiple interventions. After several decades when research into psychedelics was effectively halted by federal legislation, the past several years have shown the re-emergence of thoughtful investigations studying the utility of compounds such as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and psilocybin.
RECENT FINDINGS: Several studies have coupled the safe administration of psychedelic compounds in a controlled environment after several hours of pre

Psychoanalytic approaches, although still extensively used by practitioners, have been marginalized in treatment guidelines partly because of limited efficacy research. In recent years, several manualized psychodynamic approaches have been developed that target specific problems or disorders, which can be referred to generally as problem-focused psychodynamic psychotherapies. These treatments offer modified psychodynamic techniques to address dynamics associated with particular disorders and can be used for systematic outcome studies. For example, one of these, panic-focused psychodynamic psyc

Evidence of the effect of psychodynamic psychotherapy (PDT) has been called into question. Thus, an updated review of the effect of short-term and long-term PDT (STPP and LTPP) for anxiety, depression and personality disorders seems necessary. A systematic search of randomized controlled studies of PDT published from January 2000 to May 2016 was conducted, and we found 57 single studies and 13 meta-analyses fulfilling the criteria for inclusion. The studies show that PDT has therapeutic efficacy and effectiveness matching other forms of psychotherapy. LTPP shows better effect than STPP in the

This paper provides a comprehensive review of outcome studies and meta-analyses of effectiveness studies of psychodynamic therapy (PDT) for the major categories of mental disorders. Comparisons with inactive controls (waitlist, treatment as usual and placebo) generally but by no means invariably show PDT to be effective for depression, some anxiety disorders, eating disorders and somatic disorders. There is little evidence to support its implementation for post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, cocaine dependence or psychosis. The strongest current evid

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent in the general population, their course of illness is often chronic with many relapses, and is associated with a pronounced psychiatric comorbidity and psychosocial disability. Therefore, anxiety disorders are a major challenge to any mental health delivery system. From a perspective of treatment both differential psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions can be outlined which are well based in empirical terms. In psychiatric care biological and psychological approaches are often combined although the empirical basement of combined treatme

The view that the self has multiple parts and that these appear in people seeking psychotherapy--and people conducting psychotherapy--is shared by clinicians of various orientations and supported by psychological research. It is useful for clinicians to think of patients as multifaceted and pay attention to the changes between facets that occur during therapy. They can thus help hidden parts to surface, facilitate dialogue between parts not in contact with each other, and convince excessively dominant or oppressive parts to make room for other adaptive facets. The authors contributing to this

As a specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology I then became a specialist also in psychotherapy, including: psychodynamic therapy, group therapy, hypnotherapy, and body-therapy. In the last nineteen years I have been working to integrate the medical and psychotherapeutic approach, including attention to psychosocial factors. After some years, I found our German rate of premature birth to be 7%. This amazed me because prematurity very rarely occurred in my patients, which was down to about 1%. In France they did some surveys and studies. By informing the mothers how to live, and reducing smoking an

The "mind-body" dualism has shaped the development of psychiatry. At the very beginning psychiatry was related to the mind and the rest of the medicine to the body. The main reasons for such division were lack of biological evidence for psychiatric disorders and wrong beliefs about demonic origins of "lunacy". But although the development of science offered more than enough biological evidence to understand brain as an organ of origin for psychiatric disorders, the dualism of mind and body remained alive even in the modern classification systems. One of the consequences was another dualism tha

OBJECTIVE: The authors studied recurrent problems in psychotherapy with suicidal patients by examining the cases of patients who died by suicide while receiving open-ended psychotherapy and medication.
METHOD: Therapists for 36 patients who died by suicide while in treatment filled out clinical, medication, and psychological questionnaires and wrote detailed case narratives. They then presented their cases at an all-day workshop, and critical problems were identified in the cases.
RESULTS: Six recurrent problem areas were identified: poor communication with another therapist involved in the

Several types of psychotherapy are currently used to treat pathological gamblers. These include Gambler's Anonymous, cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and family therapy. Research into which types of psychotherapy are the most effective for pathological gambling is limited but is a growing area of study. Group therapy, namely Gambler's Anonymous, provides peer support and structure. Cognitive behavior therapy aims to identify and correct cognitive distortions about gambling. Psychodynamic psychotherapy can help recovering gamblers address core conflicts a

Eating disorders are serious illnesses associated with significant medical and psychological sequelae and, in the case of anorexia nervosa, significant mortality. Established psychotherapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy are effective for many patients with eating disorders. However, these treatments fail to yield full long-term remission in a substantial number of patients. There is a need for novel psychotherapeutic approaches for patients with eating disorders. The authors review three promising new treatment approaches in the field of eating disorders. Moti

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa and like syndromes, such as binge eating disorder, are common in young Western women. A specific manual based psychotherapy, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) has been developed for the treatment of bulimia nervosa (CBT-BN). Other psychotherapies, some from a different theoretical framework, and some modifications of CBT are also used.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of psychotherapeutic treatments for those with binge eating syndromes, that have been tested in randomised controlled trials. The efficacy of CBT in the specific treatment of bulimia nervosa and b

The study examined therapists' accuracy in predicting the length of individual outpatient psychotherapy for 109 clients and attempted to identify variables associated with predicted and actual treatment lengths. The mean predicted treatment length (9.7 months) was significantly longer than the mean length of actual treatment (6.6 months). Therapists correctly predicted treatment length to the nearest month in 26 percent of the cases. Predictions were more accurate for older clients. Treatment tended to be shorter for clients with less than a high school education. Therapists more often predict

In doing intensive psychotherapy or analysis with patients who suffer both personality and affective disorders, one must simultaneously maintain psychologic and biologic perspectives. Cooper, when talking of patients suffering from panic disorders, states that analysts must distinguish between psychologic efforts to cope with miscarried brain function and the psychologic efforts to cope with disturbances of the intrapsychic world. This is also true of patients who have affective disorders. For instance, patients who suffer from untreated affective disorder often speak of their experience of th

Historical approaches of psychotherapy for depression are contrasted with current psychotherapeutic strategies. Now more strategies are focused, structured, time-limited, observable, testable, researchable and data based. The following depressive syndromes are reviewed in terms of the literature that demonstrates the effectiveness of psychotherapy: major depressive disorder, bipolar depressive disorder, depression associated with medical illness such as cancer, myocardial infarction and stroke, resistant depression post-traumatic stress disorder, grief reactions and depression during adolescen

Recent uses of the term "paradox" in the field of psychotherapy have distracted attention from the concept's broader implications. All therapy can be seen as paradoxical because of the recursive nature of self-evaluation. Using agoraphobic problems as illustrative, and starting from the notion that the core issue for the agoraphobic is a demand for absolute control of his environment, we argue that therapy requires the bonding of two observers--the therapist and the "client-as-observer". Negotiations issuing from this bond are crucial to outcome, even when behavioral techniques, often consider

BZD may have some temporary palliative value in reducing anxiety over the short-term, but have not yet been shown to be of lasting value for neuroses either on their own or with any form of psychotherapy. When the drug is withdrawn, at best the effects do not persist and at worst there are severe side effects after withdrawal. 3 controlled studies of diazepam have been completed in phobics having exposure. In two of these there was a slight temporary gain when diazepam was combined with exposure, but the only study to have followup found that this gain dissipated within a month. Uncontrolled e

The relationship between hypnotizability and clinical improvement following brief psychotherapy was investigated. Prior to treatment 32 patients were assessed for hypnotizability utilizing an objective standardized measure of hypnotizability. Measures of psychopathology were obtained at the conclusion of ten sessions and six months post-treatment. A positive relationship was found between outcome and hypnotizability. This was most pronounced at the conclusion of ten sessions. Use of hypnotic techniques as a therapeutic adjunct did not necessarily lead to greater therapeutic effects. Different
