Age-Based Genomic Screening during Childhood: Ethical and Practical Considerations in Public Health Genomics Implementation.

Genomic sequencing offers an unprecedented opportunity to detect inherited variants that are implicated in rare Mendelian disorders, yet there are many challenges to overcome before this technology can routinely be applied in the healthy population. The age-based genomic screening (ABGS) approach is a novel alternative to genome-scale sequencing at birth that aims to provide highly actionable genetic information to parents over the course of their child's routine health care. ABGS utilizes an established metric to identify conditions with high clinical actionability and incorporates informatio

The completion of partograms: knowledge, attitudes and practices of midwives in a public health obstetric unit in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: most maternal and 24.3% of infant deaths occur during childbirth. Interventions during childbirth may reduce maternal and neonatal deaths. The Guidelines for maternity care in South Africa (2015) stipulates that all observations during labour should be recorded on a partogram. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes of nursing personnel and to evaluate their practices of completing partograms at National District Hospital, South Africa. METHODS: a two-phase, quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive study design was used. In phase 1, the knowledge

Diabetic retinopathy: global prevalence, major risk factors, screening practices and public health challenges: a review.

Diabetes retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision loss in middle-aged and elderly people globally. Early detection and prompt treatment allow prevention of diabetes-related visual impairment. Patients with diabetes require regular follow-up with primary care physicians to optimize their glycaemic, blood pressure and lipid control to prevent development and progression of DR and other diabetes-related complications. Other risk factors of DR include higher body mass index, puberty and pregnancy, and cataract surgery. There are weaker associations with some genetic and inflammatory markers.

Perceptions and Practices of Mass Bat Exposure Events in the Setting of Rabies Among U.S. Public Health Agencies.

Current guidelines in the setting of exposures to potentially rabid bats established by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) address post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) administration in situations where a person may not be aware that a bite or direct contact has occurred and the bat is not available for diagnostic testing. These include instances when a bat is discovered in a room where a person awakens from sleep, is a child without an adult witness, has a mental disability or is intoxicated. The current ACIP guidelines, however, do not address PEP in the setting of multiple p

Understanding safe sport as a public health practice: a strong structuration theory analysis of Swedish elite athletics sport personnel.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to harmful environments and practices is reported across a wide range of sports, including athletics, with negative implications for participants' health and welfare across age groups, genders, and competitive levels. Sport environments are shaped by powerful cultural norms and organisational practices, which influence how sport personnel responsible for shaping elite athletes' sporting environments understand, prioritise and enact safety in practice. This study explores how sport personnel in Swedish elite athletics interpret and enact safe sport, and how these enactments

Probing the practice and factors associated with perineal wound care among postpartum women in public health facilities in Ethiopia.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Perineal injuries stemming from episiotomies or natural perineal tears are frequent postpartum issues that necessitate appropriate management to avert infection and facilitate healing. In low- and middle-income nations, such as Ethiopia, the care for perineal wounds is frequently shaped by numerous cultural, socioeconomic, and healthcare system factors. This research sought to evaluate the management of perineal wound care and its associated factors among postpartum women in public health institutions in Gambella Regional State, western Ethiopia, 2024. A cross-sectional study based in an insti

Does syndromic surveillance assist public health practice in early detecting respiratory epidemics? Evidence from a wide Italian retrospective experience.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale diagnostic testing has been proven ineffective for prompt monitoring of the spread of COVID-19. Electronic resources may facilitate enhanced early detection of epidemics. Here, we aimed to retrospectively explore whether examining trends in the use of emergency and healthcare services and the Google search engine is useful in detecting Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus outbreaks early compared with the currently used swab-based surveillance system. METHODS: Healthcare Utilization databases of the Italian region of Lombardy and the Google Trends website were

An Urgent Need for Evidence-Based Guidance on Mercury Exposure Screening to Inform Public Health Policy, Practice, and Prevention.

OBJECTIVES: Mercury exposure is a preventable public health concern that arises from multiple environmental, dietary, and occupational exposure pathways and poses disproportionate risks to the fetus during pregnancy. However, routine identification in clinical care is limited. This study aimed to generate practice-informed evidence from primary care clinicians serving populations at risk of mercury exposure to inform the development and implementation of evidence-based guidance on mercury exposure screening in primary care. METHODS: In April 2025, we conducted a qualitative study using semist

The Incidence of Scabies in Far North Queensland, Tropical Australia: Implications for Local Clinical Practice and Public Health Strategies.

The recognition and treatment of scabies has been incorporated into Australian guidelines for the prevention of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). The incidence of both diagnosed ARF and RHD is increasing in Far North Queensland (FNQ) in northeast tropical Australia, but the local burden of scabies is incompletely defined. We reviewed the results of every skin scraping collected in FNQ's public health system between 2000 and 2023; 121/4345 (2.8%) scrapings were positive, including 19/1071 (1.8%) in the last 5 years of the study; the proportion of scrapings that were

Mitigating risk in audiology and speech therapy practice: Essential risk management and control strategies for private and public practices in resource-constrained health systems.

Effective risk management is central to patient safety, regulatory compliance, and organizational sustainability in healthcare. In South Africa, audiology and speech therapy practitioners operate within a system characterized by resource constraints, regulatory complexity, and socio-economic inequality, resulting in differentiated risk exposure across practice settings. This study explored risks encountered by practitioners and the strategies used to mitigate these risks. A qualitative design was employed in 2025 with 92 practitioners. Data were analyzed thematically, supported by descriptive

COVID-19 host genetic risk study conducted at community pharmacies: Implications for public health, research and pharmacists' scope of practice.

Community pharmacists serve a large, diverse population of patients, resulting in the potential to utilize community pharmacies as recruitment sites for clinical research. Beyond traditional roles as one of the most accessible health care professionals in the US healthcare system, pharmacists have played a major role in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, administering hundreds of thousands of vaccines and tests. However, less emphasis is placed on the ability to leverage community pharmacies as research-focused partners for clinical studies. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility an

Containment of Ebola and Polio in Low-Resource Settings Using Principles and Practices of Emergency Operations Centers in Public Health.

Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) have been credited with driving the recent successes achieved in the Nigeria polio eradication program. EOC concept was also applied to the Ebola virus disease outbreak and is applicable to a range of other public health emergencies. This article outlines the structure and functionality of a typical EOC in addressing public health emergencies in low-resource settings. It ascribes the successful polio and Ebola responses in Nigeria to several factors including political commitment, population willingness to engage, accountability, and operational and strategi

Epidemiological investigation of a Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Christchurch, New Zealand: the value of spatial methods for practical public health.

Between April and August 2005 Christchurch, New Zealand experienced an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease. There were 19 laboratory-confirmed case including three deaths. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lpsg1) was identified as the causative agent for all cases. A case-control study indicated a geographical association between the cases but no specific common exposures. Rapid spatial epidemiological investigation confirmed the association and identified seven spatially significant case clusters. The clusters were all sourced in the same area and exhibited a clear anisotropic process (notice

Upsurge of tick-borne encephalitis in the Baltic States at the time of political transition, independent of changes in public health practices.

Despite evidence that socio-economic factors associated with political transition played a major causal role in the abrupt upsurge in tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in the newly independent Baltic States, doubts are still repeatedly expressed about the importance of these factors relative to changes in public health practices that may have affected merely the registration of cases. In response to these doubts, evidence of relevant practices of surveillance, registration, diagnosis, awareness and immunization is presented as taken from archived data and interviews with experienced medical practi
