Characterization and productivity profiles of Aedes aegypti (L.) breeding habitats across rural and urban landscapes in western and coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti, the principal vector for dengue and other emerging arboviruses, breeds preferentially in various man-made and natural container habitats. In the absence of vaccine, epidemiological surveillance and vector control remain the best practices for preventing dengue outbreaks. Effective vector control depends on a good understanding of larval and adult vector ecology of which little is known in Kenya. In the current study, we sought to characterize breeding habitats and establish container productivity profiles of Ae. aegypti in rural and urban sites in western and coastal

SEASONAL MOSQUITO PRODUCTION IN STORM SEWER CATCH BASINS OF THE NORTH SHORE SUBURBS OF CHICAGO, 2021 TO 2024.

From 2021 to 2024, the number of pupae found in storm sewer catch basins in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago were assessed as part of routine quality control and improvement efforts. Over the course of these 4 yr, pupae were collected at least once during all calendar months, allowing for some insight into monthly mosquito production in catch basins. Thus, the intent of this study was to use those data to describe the number of pupae found in these structures across calendar months. In total, 1,993 unique catch basins were sampled. Pupae were found during the months of April through December

Sublethal and transgenerational effects of insecticides in developing Trichogramma galloi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) : toxicity of insecticides to Trichogramma galloi.

This study assessed the transgenerational effects of insecticides in developing Trichogramma galloi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Laboratory bioassays were performed in which five insecticides were sprayed on egg-larval, pre-pupal and pupal stages of the parasitoid. The interaction between insecticides and development stages of the parasitoid was not significant for the rate of F0 emergence. All insecticides significantly reduced the emergence of wasps, with the lowest emergence observed when they were applied to the pupal stage. For the sex ratio, only spinosad applied to the pre-pupal st

Pupal productivity of larval habitats of Aedes aegypti in Msambweni, Kwale County, Kenya.

Aedes aegypti is an important vector of several arboviruses including dengue and chikungunya viruses. Accurate identification of larval habitats of Ae. aegypti is considered an essential step in targeted control. This study determined Ae. aegypti productivity in selected larval habitats in Msambweni, Kwale County, Kenya. Three sequential larval habitat surveys were conducted. The first survey was habitat census (baseline) through which 83 representative larval habitats were identified and selected. The second and third surveys involved estimating daily productivity of the 83 selected larval ha

Drip and Overhead Sprinkler Irrigation in Blueberry as Cultural Control for Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in Northwestern United States.

Overhead sprinkler compared to drip irrigation in cropping systems can result in increased relative humidity (RH) and decreased temperature within the plant canopy. Such conditions may also result in a more favorable microclimate for pests. Drosophila suzukii Matsumura is an invasive agricultural pest of berries in America and Europe. Drosophila suzukii is susceptible to high temperatures and low RH, thus its survival may be affected by different irrigation methods. We tested how drip and overhead sprinkler irrigation in blueberries influenced temperature and RH. Furthermore, we determined how

Variation in acid hydrolase enzyme titers in different developmental stages of Aedes togoi.

Genetic mechanisms of filarial nematode susceptibility were studied in Aedes togoi. Acid hydrolases may play an important role in this process, including humoral or cell-mediated defenses. Levels of acid phosphatase, alpha-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase were determined for 1st- and 4th-instar larvae, male and female pupae, and 1- and 7-day-old adults using fluorometric and colorimetric assays. Acid phosphatase activity was highest in 1-day-old adults, moderate in larvae and pupae, and lowest in 7-day-old adults. Female 7-day-old adults had significantly high

Host breadth and parasitoids of fruit flies (Anastrepha spp.) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Puerto Rico.

Twenty fruit species representing 12 families were collected from various regions in western Puerto Rico and monitored for the emergence of Anastrepha spp. pupae. We collected 14,154 tephritid pupae from 16 fruit species representing 10 families. The relative infestations of these fruits (pupae per kilogram of fruit) were recorded. Recorded host ranges were not in complete agreement with those reported in the literature. This host-use pattern should give pause to regulators of fruit importation and exportation that base their decisions on literature from regions other than those of immediate i

A detector dog for screwworms (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

A male German wirehaired pointer, Canis familiaris L., was trained to search for and locate screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel); pupae; and animals infested with screwworms. The command, "find it" led to the detection of a screwworm-infested animal and the command "search" led to the detection of screwworm pupae. After approximately 5 mo of training, the dog could detect screwworm-infested animals. After 3 mo more of training, the dog could detect screwworm pupae. Through 7 August 1989, the dog had a success rate of 100% (265 tests) with training dummies and 94.7% (18 successes for 1

Efficacy of the entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae on Pupal stage of the common Lepidopteran pests, Ostrinia furnacalis, Mythimna separata, and Spodoptera litura.

Steinernema carpocapsae is an entomopathogenic nematode with established efficacy against various agricultural pests. However, its impact on key lepidopteran pests, including Ostrinia furnacalis, Mythimna separata, and Spodoptera litura, remains underexplored, particularly at the pupal stage. This study evaluates the efficacy of the nematode through a combination of choice-based attraction assays, non-choice infection performance bioassays involving direct application to specific pupal body parts, and assessments of sublethal effects on adult survival and oviposition following pupal-stage expo

The combined effects of ultrasound and plasma-activated water on silkworm pupae:Physicochemical properties, microbiological diversity and ultrastructure.

A novel technique was proposed for processing silkworm pupae by combining plasma- activated water (PAW) with ultrasound (US). The microbial diversity and quality characteristics of the silkworm pupae were also evaluated. The results of the microbial diversity analysis indicated that PAW combined with US treatment significantly reduced the relative abundance of Streptococcaceae, Leuconostocaceae, and Acetobacteraceae from 32%, 18% and 16% to 27%, 11% and 11%, respectively. Microstructural analysis demonstrated that the collapse of the internal structure of chitin in silkworm pupae facilitated t

Observations of the developmental stages of Coquillettidia perturbans (Diptera: Culicidae) with special reference to the pupal trumpets.

Coquillettidia perturbans (Walker) is a North American mosquito species of medical and veterinary importance that has been implicated as a vector of eastern equine encephalitis virus. Larval and pupal C. perturbans possess highly specialized respiratory appendages that enable them to respire from air vesicles in the hollow roots and shoots of emergent aquatic vegetation, which means that the larval and pupal stages have remained largely understudied. Field-collected C. perturbans larvae, pupae, and adults were studied under laboratory conditions in an attempt to establish a laboratory colony.

Effect of kynurenic acid on development and aging in wild type and vermilion mutants of Drosophila melanogaster.

BACKGROUND: Up-regulation of tryptophan (Trp) conversion into kynurenine (Kyn) and increased formation of down-stream metabolites of Kyn is one of the mechanisms of aging and neurodegenerative disorders. Kyn is an immediate precursor of kynurenic acid (KYNA), an antagonist to NMDA and α7nAChR receptors and activator of aryl hydrocarbon receptor. Increased formation of KYNA ameliorates neurodegeneration and eclosion defect in Drosophila model of Huntington's Disease. AIMS: Effect of KYNA on pupae viability and life span was evaluated in wild type (Canton-S, CS) and vermilion Drosophila mutants

Evaluation of larviposition site selection of Glossina brevipalpis.

Tsetse species (Diptera: Glossinidae) are vectors of trypanosome parasites which cause disease in both humans and livestock. In South Africa Glossina austeni Newstead, 1912 and G. brevipalpis Newstead, 1911 are responsible for the cyclical transmission of animal trypanosomes causing African animal trypanosomiasis also referred to as nagana. Gravid tsetse females deposit a single larva in specific sites but little information is available on biotic and abiotic factors that govern site selection. This study therefore aimed to characterize some of the substrate conditions that may influence selec

Pathogenicity of Zygosaccharomyces bailii and Other Yeast Species to Mexican Fruit Fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) and Mass Rearing Implications.

Yeasts from all immature life stages of Mexican fruit fly Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) from diet, insectary air, and rearing materials were isolated, identified and evaluated for pathogenicity. Fifteen species of yeasts with one to genus level were identified from 72 yeast cultures obtained. Zygosaccharomyces bailii was the only yeast found to be highly pathogenic to Mexican fruit fly. Seventy-two hours post inoculation, the diet in bioassay cups with Z. bailii consistently showed signs of fermentation with gas bubbling causing the migration of larvae to the walls and lids o
