OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of erythromycin, lidocaine, and metoclopramide on smooth muscle of the pyloric antrum (PA), proximal portion of the duodenum (PD), and middle portion of the jejunum (MJ) of horses. Sample Population-Strips of smooth muscle from 7 horses.
PROCEDURE: Isolated muscle strips were suspended in a bath and attached to isometric force transducers. Once stable spontaneous contractions were observed, agents were added. Isometric stress responses were compared with the amplitude of spontaneous contractions.

Mucosal biopsies from multiple sites in the stomachs of 21 patients with pernicious anaemia have been examined. The histological changes almost always involved the entire gastric mucosa, including that of the pyloric antrum. The effects of normobaric and hyperbaric hyperoxia (short and long time) have been studied on the pyloric antrum motility of the rabbit. The results show the absence of effect of normobaric oxygen in short application (twenty to thirty minutes), but its inhibiting effect on the pyloric antrum motility in long time application. The hyperbaric hyperoxia slows down the frequency of the pyloric antrum contractions so much more the pression is higher. This effect is independant of the speed to which the pression is set up, and also of the moment of day where the experiment is done.

Knowledge of the function of the gastroduodenal junction is important, as changes in its motility are associated with gastrointestinal disorders.
