Pyometra is a major reproductive disorder affecting female cats. Characterized by the accumulation of purulent exudate in the uterus, it can lead to severe and potentially fatal complications. This pathology primarily occurs in adult cats during diestrus, but can also affect younger felines, often due to inappropriate administration of hormonal medications. While the etiopathogenesis of pyometra is better understood in bitches, few studies have addressed the molecular factors involved in feline pyometra. Therefore, this review aims to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive discussion of pyome

Pyometra is a gynecological condition characterized by pus accumulation in the endometrial cavity. It is a rare condition, and it should be included in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain in postmenopausal women. We present a case of a 65-year-old postmenopausal woman with complaints of foul-smelling white discharge, itching in the perineal region, lower abdominal pain, and postmenopausal bleeding for two to three months. USG of the pelvis was done outside, which revealed heterogeneous ill-defined cervical growth with endometrial fluid collection and multiple uterine fibroids. CT and

Pyometra is a prevalent disease in intact bitches and the standard treatment is ovariohysterectomy (OHE). Published descriptions of normal sonographic findings after OHE are currently lacking. The aims of this prospective observational study were to describe and compare postoperative abdominal sonographic features for three timepoints following OHE in a group of dogs with pyometra and an uneventful recovery. A total of 22 dogs had sequential focused abdominal ultrasound examinations on days 1, 4-6, and 10-15 postsurgery. Recorded sonographic features for each examination time point and charact

A 7-year-old female sugar glider showed a well-defined, homogeneous, hypoechoic mass in the caudal abdominal cavity on ultrasound. Exploratory laparotomy revealed both uteri were severely dilated by viscous, purulent exudate. The patient underwent ovariohysterectomy with removal of bilateral vaginal canals. Antibiotic therapy was initiated postoperatively. Histopathological findings were consistent with suppurative metritis, leading to a clinical diagnosis of pyometra. Despite abscess formation in the uterine stump or central vaginal canal and bilateral renal pelvic/ureter dilations postoperat

Plasmablastic lymphoma is a mature B-cell neoplasm with plasmablastic differentiation, often associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and other forms of immunosuppression. Although it is usually an aggressive disease, spontaneous regression has been seen in a few cases. Plasmablastic lymphoma of the uterus is rare. We report a case of atypical lymphoplasmacytic proliferation resembling plasmablastic lymphoma associated with pyometra that disappeared completely as the pyometra resolved. A 76-year-old HIV-negative woman presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding. Ultrasound and

We aimed to investigate the occurrence, phylogeny, and virulence of E. coli in the uterine contents and urine of female dogs with pyometra, through the presence of virulence genes and their genetic similarity. Uterine secretions and urine samples from 52 female dogs with pyometra were collected and cultured. Strains identified as E. coli from 25 uterine and 7 urine samples were tested for virulence genes by PCR. Genetic similarity between the isolates was studied using RAPD-PCR. E. coli was observed in 48.07% uterine samples with pyometra and 20.0% urine samples. The strains showed high percen

BACKGROUND: Pyometra is a rare gynecological condition and is characterized by pus accumulation in the uterine cavity. It occurs more frequently in postmenopausal women than tubo-ovarian abscesses, which constitute a more common gynecological complication among premenopausal women.
OBJECTIVE: A 72-year-old woman was admitted to our emergency department with lower abdominal pain, diarrhea and fever for the last three days. The laboratory results were indicative to sepsis. The clinical examination revealed sensitivity by palpation of the lower abdomen without any signs of acute abdomen. The gyn

The Gram-negative, rod-shaped, anaerobe bacteria Tissierella praeacuta was first described in 1908 by Tissier. However, during the past decade, Clostridium hastiforme has been recognised as a later synonym of T. praeacuta. C. hastiforme/T. praeacuta has only rarely been described in previous literature as a cause of human infection. We present here a case report of C. hastiforme/T. praeacuta bacteraemia secondary to pyometra in a 64-year-old woman with a history of multiple sclerosis and an intrauterine device inserted three decades earlier. C. hastiforme/T. praeacuta was isolated from blood a

The objective of the study was to describe the feasibility of a glove port technique for laparoscopic-assisted surgical treatment of canine pyometra. In this retrospective case series, a total of 10 female dogs (median age 7 years, range 5.5-10.5 years; median weight 37.0 kg, range 12.9-64.0 kg) with pyometra were included. A multiaccess port was created from a surgical glove attached to an Alexis wound retractor and placed in the ventral midline between the middle and caudal third of the distance between umbilicus and pubic rim. A vessel sealing device was used for transection of the ovarian

Pyometra is a bacterial infection of the uterus that is common in dogs and is potentially life-threatening if delayed in diagnosis and/or treatment. Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) is a cytosolic enzyme involved in DNA precursor synthesis, and it is also present in serum from patients with malignant diseases. TK1 has been used as a cell proliferation biomarker for many years in human medicine and recently in dogs. However, little is known regarding serum TK1 levels in individuals with bacterial infection. The objective of this study was to determine the activity of serum TK1 in dogs with pyometra and

Pyometra is the accumulation of pus in the uterine cavity, thus stretching its walls and thinning and enlarging the uterus. This change is characteristic of the senium period of life, when the uterus is atrophic with a stenotic cervical canal. It most frequently occurs as a result of secondary infection of the cancerogenic tissue of the uterus and additional stenosation and clogging up of cervical canal by a malignant process. Apart from carcinomas of the body and uterus cervix, pyometra less often can occur in other illnesses such as senile endometritis and senile colpitis. As pyometra most f

Monoclonal antibodies to human estrogen receptor were used with an indirect immunohistochemical technique to localize in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of the genital tract of the bitch. The presence of estrogen receptors in the uterus of dogs with cystic hyperplasia endometritis complex (CHE) was compared with normal uteri from dogs at the same stage of estrous cycle. Lower estrogen receptor expression was found in the squamous metaplastic epithelium covering the luminal surface of the endometrium from dogs with CHE than in the columnar epithelium from normal dogs. In contrast, th

Endotoxemia in bitches with pyometra can cause severe systemic effects directly or via the release of inflammatory mediators. Plasma endotoxin concentrations were measured in ten bitches suffering from pyometra with moderately to severely deteriorated general condition, and in nine bitches admitted to surgery for non-infectious reasons. Endotoxin samples were taken on five occasions before, during and after surgery. In addition, urine and uterine bacteriology was performed and hematological, blood biochemical parameters, prostaglandin F2alpha metabolite 15-ketodihydro-PGF2alpha (PG-metabolite)

In the current scenario, antibiotic therapy for the treatment of infectious processes such as pyometra is a matter of concern in veterinary medicine. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics and the consequent emergence of bacterial resistance have led to therapeutic protocols that often show reduced or absent efficacy. Since ovariohysterectomy eliminates the source of infection, the use of pre-, intra-, and postoperative antibiotic therapy has been questioned by many researchers. Prospective studies based on the restricted use of such medications may contribute to the development of guidelines f

Ruptured pyometra is a rare but life-threatening condition that often presents with generalized peritonitis and septic shock, particularly in elderly patients. Although total hysterectomy with peritoneal lavage has traditionally been the standard treatment, it may impose excessive physiological stress in patients with poor general condition. We report a case of an elderly woman with ruptured pyometra who was treated with laparoscopic uterine-preserving management using open drainage. Intraoperatively, uterine perforations with purulent discharge were identified. Instead of closing the perforat

This study aimed to explore the key molecular changes related to endoplasmic reticulum stress and mitochondrial damage in the uterine tissues of bitches with open pyometra. A total of 16 bitches were included in the study, divided into a healthy control group (n = 8) and a pyometra group (n = 8). The results showed that compared with healthy individuals, the mRNA expression. and protein abundance of endoplasmic reticulum stress marker genes PERK, ATF4, CHOP, GRP78 and GRP94 were significantly upregulated in the uterine tissues of bitches with pyometra. At the same time, it was observed that th

INTRODUCTION: Cervical stenosis (CS) is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the cervical canal, which can lead to complications such as pyometra and fallopian tube torsion (FTT). The interplay of these conditions is rarely documented in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old Ethiopian woman, with a history of recurrent genitourinary infections and 16 years post-menopausal, presented with sudden onset right-sided lower abdominal pain, nausea, and foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Physical examination revealed a mass consistent with a 14-week size uterus and tachycardia. Ultr

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex (CEH-P) is a common disease in sexually mature bitches. Disease progression leads to oxidative stress, resulting in the depletion of uterine antioxidants and lipid peroxidation of associated cells, which further aggravates the condition. The concentration of antioxidant enzymes, the level of lipid peroxidation within the uterine tissue, and its reflection in the serum and urine need to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to analyze the concentration of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), glutat

Pyometra is a uterine infection that causes pus to accumulate in the uterine cavity. Pyometra primarily affects postmenopausal women. Multiple aetiologies, including cervical stenosis, have been identified. Medical therapy using intravenous antibiotics and surgical evacuation are the conventional treatment options for pyometra. Here, we present a unique case of a novel therapy for pyometra in a geriatric patient; percutaneous alleviation of the causative cervical stenosis was performed using balloon dilatation, along with endometrial drainage of the infected fluid through her vagina, a natural
