From Qualitative Research to Quantitative Preference Elicitation: An Example in Invasive Meningococcal Disease.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative research is fundamental for designing discrete choice experiments (DCEs) but is often underreported in the preference literature. We developed a DCE to elicit preferences for vaccination against invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) among adolescents and young people (AYP) and parents and legal guardians (PLG) in the United States. This article reports the targeted literature review and qualitative interviews that informed the DCE design and demonstrates how to apply the recent reporting guidelines for qualitative developmental work in preference studies. METHODS: This

Improving the quality of prison research: A qualitative study of ex-offender service user involvement in prison suicide prevention research.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the leading cause of avoidable death in prisons worldwide and suicide prevention is an international priority. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop evidence-based treatments. We conducted a randomized controlled trial of a novel suicide prevention psychological therapy for male prisoners. To promote ecological validity by addressing the "real-world" situation of suicidal prisoners, we involved a consultant group of ex-offenders with past experience of being suicidal during imprisonment. Service user involvement in prison research is challenging and underdevel

Views on mental health research in the context of schizophrenia: perspectives of peer support workers and researchers with lived experience - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Since the end of the 20th century, mental health research has been increasingly driven by the hope of uncovering the neurobiological roots of mental illness. Despite progress in this area, significant therapeutic breakthroughs - especially for complex conditions such as schizophrenia - remain limited. It is unclear whether these research priorities truly align with the needs and experiences of those affected. Greater involvement of people with lived experience in shaping research questions and processes could enhance the clinical relevance of research and lead to more effective, pa

Ethical Challenges of Obtaining Informed Consent: Qualitative Research on the Perspectives of Tuberculosis Patients Participating in Human Genomic Research in Ethiopia.

The use of human genetic variation to comprehend complex diseases has also introduced several ethical, legal, and societal issues (ELSI). Despite the important contribution of Human Genome Research (HGR), full comprehension of these issues by all its stakeholders remains challenging. This research focused on exploring the understanding of research participants on the informed consent process of HGR. Nineteen Ethiopian TB patients, who participated in genomics research, were purposely selected for in-depth interviews. Their recorded responses were transcribed into text-based versions and analyz

What Does 'Participant 13a' Really Mean? Rethinking Participant Identification in Qualitative Research Reporting.

Participant identifiers, such as pseudonyms or numerical labels, are often attached to quoted data extracts in qualitative research. These identifiers may be considered markers of methodological rigour, analytic breadth, and transparency. Yet, qualitative inquiry encompasses diverse epistemological and analytic traditions, raising questions about whether participant identifiers necessarily serve the same methodological purpose across approaches. In this Pearls, Piths, and Provocations perspective, I draw on examples from my own research practice, experiences with peer review, and feedback from

Qualitative Research on Respiratory Care Education Topics in Published Literature: A Scoping Review.

Understanding the thought processes of individuals who receive and deliver health care is essential for driving innovation and improving care delivery. Qualitative research explores how and why people act, revealing the decision-making processes within specific contexts. Despite its potential, qualitative research has been underrepresented in medical literature, and many journals may undervalue such submissions. The purpose of this review was to map the characteristics of qualitative education research related to respiratory care practice across peer-reviewed and grey literature in both clinic

Advancing Food Is Medicine Research: An EPIS-Informed Qualitative Study of Stakeholder Views.

IntroductionDiet quality in the United States remains poor and contributes to chronic disease. Food is medicine (FIM) interventions integrate healthy foods into health care to manage or treat diet-related illness. Although evidence supports the nutrition-health link, less is known about how to implement FIM programs effectively in real-world settings or how to design FIM research across complex delivery systems. Guided by the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment (EPIS) framework, this qualitative study examines early implementation experiences from the American Heart Assoc

Burden from Study Questionnaire on Patient Fatigue in Qualitative Congestive Heart Failure Research.

Mixed methods research forms the backbone of translational research methodologies. Qualitative research and subjective data lead to hypothesis generation and ideas that are then proven via quantitative methodologies and gathering objective data. In this vein, clinical trials that generate subjective data may have limitations, when they are not followed through with quantitative data, in terms of their ability to be considered gold standard evidence and inform guidelines and clinical management. However, since many research methods utilise qualitative tools, an initial factor is that such tools

The cognitive processes employed by undergraduate nursing OSCE assessors: A qualitative research study.

OBJECTIVES: The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is an assessment format commonly used to assess undergraduate nursing students. However, in spite of its prominence, relatively little research has been conducted into how OSCE assessors form judgements about student performances, and whether divergent processes of judgement formation have the potential to negatively impact the inter-rater reliability (IRR) of awarded scores. This qualitative study aimed to uncover the cognitive processes which assessors employ when assessing OSCE performances. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: In
