Update on oral vaccination of foxes and raccoon dogs against rabies.

An assessment of a report issued by the European Commission in 2002 is presented about the oral vaccination of foxes against rabies, as well as additional topics such as the rabies aetiology and its occurrence in Europe, the target species for oral vaccination, i.e. foxes and raccoon dogs, the oral vaccines available and their thermostability, rabies surveillance and monitoring, and the recent international guidelines for rabies surveillance are discussed. Foxes are the only known reservoir for rabies in Europe, and raccoon dogs are important transmitters, while other carnivores play a less im

Pulmonary trematodosis (Pharyngostomoides sp.) in a juvenile raccoon (Procyon lotor).

A lethargic, wild, juvenile raccoon died and was subsequently presented for necropsy. The lungs had widely disseminated, finely granular, yellow-tan foci with moderate pulmonary, as well as, thoracic lymphadenopathy. Histopathology revealed numerous cross-sections of larval trematodes morphologically consistent with diplostomid mesocercariae and metacercariae as well as moderate alveolointerstitial pneumonia with a mixed population of eosinophils, macrophages, lymphocytes, and plasma cells. The presence of larval trematodes within lymphatics in multiple organs indicates a route of fluke migrat

Rabies in northeastern Europe--the threat from invasive raccoon dogs.

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the main terrestrial wildlife rabies vector in Europe. However, recently the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides)--an invasive species originating from East Asia--has become increasingly important as secondary host, especially in the Baltic States. This imposes problems on neighboring rabies-free countries (such as Finland), where the density of each of the two vector species on its own might be too low to sustain a long-term rabies epizootic, but the community of vectors could be large enough to support a rabies epizootic. In this modeling study, we analyzed r

Comparison of suburban vaccine distribution strategies to control raccoon rabies.

Helicopters and hand baiting are commonly used to distribute vaccine-laden baits to help control raccoon (Procyon lotor) rabies in suburban landscapes, but these techniques may be labor intensive, costly, or unavailable in some areas. We tested conventional baiting strategies against polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) bait stations in Erie County (New York, USA) during July and August 2003-05. Hand, helicopter, and bait station treatments were randomly assigned to six 25-km(2) suburban study sites. To estimate the proportion of raccoons that ingested baits, tooth and blood samples from 954 raccoons were

Safety and efficacy of the oral rabies vaccine SAG2 in raccoon dogs.

Oral vaccination programmes in several rabies-infected countries from Northern and Eastern Europe should not be restricted to foxes but should target raccoon dogs as well. The safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of Rabigen SAG2 bait was evaluated in raccoon dogs. Safety of SAG2 was demonstrated after direct instillation (n = 5) or ingestion of a bait (n = 5) using a quantity of virus at least 10 times superior to the field dose. All animals seroconverted and remained healthy. Raccoon dogs were vaccinated by SAG2 bait ingestion and unvaccinated raccoon dogs were kept as controls. More than 6 mo

Molecular characterization of a Babesia species identified in a North American raccoon.

Piroplasmosis was first described in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in 1926, and the official description of a small piroplasm as Babesia lotori was done in 1981. Babesia microti-like gene sequences have been characterized in raccoons in both North American and Japan. It is well documented that the microscopic appearance of piroplasms does not always accurately predict the genotype and phylogenetic classification. Discrepancies using phenotype to predict genotype have been reported most frequently when evaluating small piroplasms. We amplified and sequenced the full-length 18S rRNA gene from a small

Clinical features of experimental trichinellosis in the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides).

Three groups of six raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) were provided for the experiment: the first group was infected with pig-origin Trichinella spiralis, the second with raccoon dog-origin Trichinella nativa, and the third served as controls. Infection dose for both parasite species was 1000 larvae/kg of body weight, which led to intense final infection. Clinical signs, haematology and serum biochemistry with repeated blood samples were monitored up to 12 weeks post-infection. The most significant findings were a short-term eosinophilia in peripheral blood from the end of the first week

Radiologic-pathologic findings in raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) encephalitis.

A 13-month-old boy developed eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, retinitis, and a protracted encephalopathy with severe residual deficits. The initial MR examination revealed diffuse periventricular white matter disease, and follow-up images showed atrophy. Brain biopsy, serology, and epidemiologic studies lead to the diagnosis of Baylisascaris procyonis infection, a parasitic disease contracted through exposure to soil contaminated by the eggs of a common raccoon intestinal roundworm. The pathologic, epidemiologic, and imaging features of this disease are herein reviewed.

Metals and metallothionein in the liver of raccoons: utility for environmental assessment and monitoring.

The relationship between metallothionein levels and concentrations of several metals and radionuclides was examined in liver tissues of raccoons (Procyon lotor, n = 47) from the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site in South Carolina to determine the applicability of metallothioneins as an initial screening device for exposure assessment in free-living mammals and environmental monitoring. Using a fluorescent marker and a cell sorter to measure metallothionein, a significant positive correlation was found across animals between levels of metallothioneins and concentrations of selenium (Pe

Listeriosis in a raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) associated with canine distemper.

A wild raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) that manifested severe illness and died was examined. Necropsy revealed severe emaciation, systemic icterus and petechial hemorrhages on the mucous membranes. Histopathologically, necroses were seen in the liver and brain stem associated with meningitis. Eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed in the spleen and intestinal mucosa, and eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies were seen in transitional epithelium in the bladder. Listeria monocytogenes 4b was isolated from the liver, spleen, kidneys and lungs, and the pathogen wa

Somatosensory receptive field properties of corpus callosum fibres in the raccoon.

Anatomical studies in a number of species have shown that most areas of the somatosensory cortex are callosally interconnected. This is also true for the raccoon, at least for those parts representing proximal and axial body regions. Electrophysiologically, studies carried out in cats and monkeys have demonstrated that all sensory sub-modalities cross in the callosum. Moreover, cells representing the paws and fingers, though occupying a large portion of areas SI and SII, seem to send proportionately fewer axons through the callosum than axial structures. No comparable study has been carried ou

Quantitative morphology of the panda brain in comparison with the brains of the raccoon and the bear.

The quantitative development of brain and brain components with respect to body-size is discussed comparatively for the Chinese Giant Panda, the Canadian Raccoon and the American Black Bear. The panda ranks highest in encephalization as well as in relative volumes of neocortex, cerebellum and six other parts. The raccoon exhibits the strongest development of olfactory elements. The bear stays below the other species, showing but a single index that is superior to the corresponding index in one of them only. These results must be considered within the context of recent debates on the systematic

The raccoon ascarid. A probable cause of human ocular larva migrans.

The ability of raccoon roundworm larvae, Baylisascaris procyonis, to produce ocular larva migrans (OLM) was studied in various experimental animals. In addition, the clinical and pathologic lesions were compared to those in suspected cases of human ocular baylisascariasis, in patients with diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN). Ocular larva migrans was produced in squirrel monkeys, cynomolgus monkeys, mice, hamsters, grey squirrels, and woodchucks orally infected with B. procyonis eggs. The clinical and histologic lesions were primarily those of retinitis, retinal hemorrhages, reti

Raccoon babesiosis in Connecticut, USA: Babesia lotori sp. n.

A species of Babesia which infects raccoons, Procyon lotor, is described and named Babesia lotori. Twelve of 14 raccoons captured from five counties in Connecticut developed parasitemia after splenectomy. Preoperative levels were subpatent or less than 1%. Parasitemia peaked anywhere from less than 5% to 36.6% in splenectomized raccoons, and all but one survived and possessed low infection rates (less than or equal to 3%) at the end of the experiment. An indirect fluorescent antibody test is described and shown to be useful in detecting antibodies to B. lotori. Seropositive raccoons were obtai

Testicular development, sexual maturation, and seasonal variation in spermatogenesis of Raccoons in Wakayama Prefecture.

This study investigated the timing of puberty and seasonal changes in spermatogenesis in raccoons (n=156) from Wakayama Prefecture. In the 0-year class, testis size, weight, and seminiferous tubule diameter increased in winter, although only a few raccoons were sexually mature. Most raccoons in the 1-year class attained sexual maturity by autumn-winter of their second year. In the ≥2-year class, testicular activity regressed during summer. Spermatogenesis scores were used to assess age-dependent spermatogenic development. Logistic regression indicated that testes with epididymides ≥19.1 mm in

Toxoplasma gondii in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in Germany: a serosurvey based on meat juice.

Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence was determined in meat juice samples of 820 free-living raccoons from Germany. The animals were collected between December 2017 and April 2021. Using a commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the overall seroprevalence was found to be 48.5%. Statistical analysis revealed significant seroprevalence differences between seasons, sex, and weight of analysed raccoons. The prevalence in late winter/spring (57.7%) was significantly higher than in autumn (38.4%) (p < 0.0003). Male raccoons (50.5%) were more often seropositive than females (41.0%) (p = 0.0

Antibodies to West Nile virus in raccoons and other wild peridomestic mammals in Iowa.

Surveillance for evidence of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in small- and medium-sized wild mammals was conducted in Iowa, USA, from May 2005 to June 2007. Sera were collected from 325 mammals belonging to nine species and tested for antibodies to WNV and other flaviviruses by epitope-blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All sera that had antibodies to flaviviruses by blocking ELISA were further examined by plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). Thirteen mammals were seropositive for WNV by PRNT, including 10 raccoons (Procyon lotor). The seroprevalence for WNV in raccoon
