A 4D radar and LiDAR fusion framework for weather-robust 3D object detection.

As a foundational technology in autonomous driving, 3D object detection plays a critical role by enabling vehicles to perceive their surroundings. However, LiDAR suffers from severe point cloud degradation in adverse weather, while 4D Radar, though more robust, introduces low-resolution and noisy measurements. Fusing LiDAR and 4D Radar is expected to enhance robustness, yet existing methods lack the ability to dynamically adapt to weather-induced sensor degradation and remain vulnerable to radar noise. To address these issues, we propose DDMDGF, a novel LiDAR-4D Radar fusion framework for weat

Rapid detection and quantification of sweet potato storage roots using ground penetrating radar.

Sweet potato is a nutritionally valuable crop that contributes to food security, owing to its storage roots rich in starch, sugars, and antioxidants, while requiring minimal cultivation inputs. Estimating its yield based on visible above-ground traits remains challenging due to weak and inconsistent correlations between shoot biomass and storage root development. Therefore, direct assessment of underground biomass is essential. In this study, we demonstrate the field application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) for non-destructive detection and yield estimation of sweet potato. GPR is a geoph

The Use of Radar-Guided Localization to Identify Metastatic Melanoma After Neoadjuvant Immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Radar-guided localization (RGL) is a nonradioactive, wireless technique used to localize target lesions for resection via a percutaneously placed intra-tumoral reflector and a handheld probe intraoperatively. RGL plays a critical role in the setting of nonpalpable lesions. This study describes RGL for patients undergoing neoadjuvant immunotherapy (NEO) for metastatic melanoma. METHODS: A retrospective review included stage III-IV melanoma patients who underwent NEO followed by metastasectomy with RGL. RESULTS: Twenty-three patients were identified. Median age was 65 years; ten we

Respi-Radar: a tool to monitor respiratory infections, Belgium, winter season 2023/24.

Following the experience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Belgian Risk Assessment Group (RAG) developed the Respi-Radar in the summer of 2023 to assess the epidemiological situation of respiratory infections and inform public health preparedness and response in Belgium. The Respi-Radar consists of four risk levels (green, yellow, orange and red), which indicate the extent of viral circulation and/or pressure on the healthcare system. Based on these risk levels, authorities can apply adequate measures depending on the epidemiological trends. The Respi-Radar uses six indicators from the

Enhanced range doppler mapping algorithm for passive GNSS based radar aerial target detection.

Using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signal as signal source and applying the principle of radar for object detection is a non-contact and emerging object detection technology. However, due to the problems that weak signal and low resolution, the application of such technology in object detection is very limited. On the basis of the detection of moving targets in the air, this paper puts forward a SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) improvement scheme of RDM (range doppler map). In this paper, bi-static GNSS radar model is employed. The RDM of air target is obtained on the basis of direct a

A deep learning approach for non-invasive Alzheimer's monitoring using microwave radar data.

Over 50 million people globally suffer from Alzheimer's disease (AD), emphasizing the need for efficient, early diagnostic tools. Traditional methods like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans are expensive, bulky, and slow. Microwave-based techniques offer a cost-effective, non-invasive, and portable solution, diverging from conventional neuroimaging practices. This article introduces a deep learning approach for monitoring AD , using realistic numerical brain phantoms to simulate scattered signals via the CST Studio Suite. The obtained data is preprocessed using

Detection of Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Events Using Millimeter-wave Radar and Pulse Oximeter.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS) is a sleep-related breathing disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The gold standard for OSAHS diagnosis, polysomnography (PSG), faces challenges in popularization due to its high cost and complexity. Recently, radar has shown potential in detecting sleep apnea-hypopnea events (SAE) with the advantages of low cost and non-contact monitoring. However, existing studies, especially those using deep learning, employ segment-based classification approach for SAE detection, making the task of event quantity estimatio

Non-contact diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea using impulse-radio ultra-wideband radar.

While full-night polysomnography is the gold standard for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea, its limitations include a high cost and first-night effects. This study developed an algorithm for the detection of respiratory events based on impulse-radio ultra-wideband radar and verified its feasibility for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. A total of 94 subjects were enrolled in this study (23 controls and 24, 14, and 33 with mild, moderate, and severe obstructive sleep apnea, respectively). Abnormal breathing detected by impulse-radio ultra-wideband radar was defined as a drop in

Quantitative gait measurement with pulse-Doppler radar for passive in-home gait assessment.

In this paper, we propose a pulse-Doppler radar system for in-home gait assessment of older adults. A methodology has been developed to extract gait parameters including walking speed and step time using Doppler radar. The gait parameters have been validated with a Vicon motion capture system in the lab with 13 participants and 158 test runs. The study revealed that for an optimal step recognition and walking speed estimation, a dual radar set up with one radar placed at foot level and the other at torso level is necessary. An excellent absolute agreement with intraclass correlation coefficien

Evaluation of a radar-based proximity warning system for off-highway dump trucks.

A radar-based proximity warning system was evaluated by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to determine if the system would be effective in detecting objects in the blind spots of an off-highway dump truck. An average of five fatalities occur each year in surface mines as a result of an equipment operator not being aware of a smaller vehicle, person or change in terrain near the equipment. Sensor technology that can detect such obstacles and that also is designed for surface mining applications is rare. Researchers worked

Radar-Based Monitoring for Non-Contact Detection of Nocturnal Hypoglycemia in Diabetes: A Review.

Radar technology has emerged as a promising tool for contactless monitoring of sleep physiology and related disorders. Nocturnal hypoglycemia is a critical safety concern in people with diabetes, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, older adults, and individuals in long-term care, where body-worn devices are often not used. To assess the feasibility of radar-based hypoglycemia detection, we conducted a scoping review of studies published between January 2007 and July 2025 that investigated radar monitoring of physiological parameters during sleep or sleep-related disorders

Classification of Mental Disorders based on the Fusion of Millimeter-wave Radar and Photoplethysmography Signals.

Mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, affect approximately 900 million people worldwide, posing severe challenges to healthcare systems and society. Accurate classification of mental disorders is crucial for effective treatment. However, current diagnostic methods primarily rely on behavioral observation and self-reported questionnaires, which are highly influenced by patient subjectivity and physician expertise. Sleep provides a stable physiological state largely unaffected by subjective emotions. Sleep-related vital signs, such as respiration and heart rate, offer valuable insigh

Evaluation of a new X-band weather radar for operational use in south Sweden.

The performance of a new type of X-band weather radar (WR) for Sweden during a pilot run is studied. Compared to the conventional C-band WRs, the X-band WR covers a smaller area but with a higher spatiotemporal resolution, making it suitable for urban hydrological applications. Rainfall estimations from different elevation angles of the radar (levels) are compared at one-minute and single-event timescales with the observations of several rain gauges at different ranges using hyetographs. In general, the estimations aligned well with observations and the best match appeared for ranges as long a

RADAR: A novel fast-screening method for reading difficulties with special focus on dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a developmental learning disorder of single word reading accuracy and/or fluency, with compelling research directed towards understanding the contributions of the visual system. While dyslexia is not an oculomotor disease, readers with dyslexia have shown different eye movements than typically developing students during text reading. Readers with dyslexia exhibit longer and more frequent fixations, shorter saccade lengths, more backward refixations than typical readers. Furthermore, readers with dyslexia are known to have difficulty in reading long words, lower skipping rate of sho

Enhancing data visualisation to capture the simulator sickness phenomenon: On the usefulness of radar charts.

The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled "The use of transdermal scopolamine to solve methodological issues raised by gender differences in susceptibility to simulator sickness" (Chaumillon et al., 2017) [1]. In an outstanding first demonstration, Kennedy et al. [2] showed that the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) is an appropriate tool to suit the purposes of characterizing motion sickness experienced in virtual environments. This questionnaire has since been used in many scientific studies. Recently, Balk et al. [3] suggested that the proposed seg
