Is superficial radial nerve affected in patients with hand osteoarthritis?

INTRODUCTION: Patients with superficial radial neuropathy (SRN) have pain and abnormal sensation on the hand similar to hand osteoarthritis (HOA). PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the presence of SRN in patients with HOA and to determine the factors associated with electrophysiological parameters of the radial nerve. STUDY DESIGN: This is a case-control study. METHODS: A total of 138 patients were included in this study. Only the dominant hand of each patient was evaluated. Patients were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (without SRN) or Group 2 (with SRN) by

A rare localization of neurothekeomas of radial nerve: A case report.

Neurothekeoma is a very rare benign connective tissue tumour that presumably derived from nerve sheath cells. We described the case of a rare localization of neurothekeoma in the upper limb with a strange presentation. A 49 years-old woman presented to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Division of the Umberto I Hospital referring an intensive pain associated to paresthesias at the left forearm lasting from six months. The patient had a history of epicondylitis confirmed with an elbow RMN showing an increased thickness of the tendon insertions on the epicondiloidea region of the elbow. R

[Treatment-related damage to the radial nerve in paediatric traumatology].

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic damage of the N. ulnaris is a known complication of treatment of supracondylar humeral fractures in children. But damage to the N. radialis can also occur in the treatment of many typical fractures of the upper extremity during growth. There are no differentiated investigations on their incidence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This paper presents a prospective case collection and describes the personal experience with the occurrence and treatment of iatrogenic damage to the radial nerve during growth. RESULTS: In all 9 out of 20 cases occurred in the primary care setting, a fu

Splint satisfaction in the treatment of traumatic radial nerve injuries.

Between the years 1986-2001, 135 patients who have had traumatic radial nerve injury, were supplied with dynamic wrist-hand orthoses (WHOs). The aim of this study is to examine the applied splints, considering aspects such as apperance, practicality of use, function, comfort and endurance. The author's assessments show that the biggest problem was due to the unaesthetic appearance of the finger extensor spring of the splints. For this reason, modification of these finger extensor outriggers has been attempted. Also, aspects of the splints such as the problems faced and regeneration of the nerv

Regeneration of the radial nerve in a dog influenced by electrical stimulation.

The effect of biphasic electric fields on nerve regeneration that follows injury to the left radial nerve of a dog was examined using electromyography (EMG). The left and right radial nerves were crushed with a serrated hemostat and the stimulating electrodes were positioned proximally and distally relative to the site of the injury. The left nerves received rectangular, biphasic current pulses (30μA, 0.5Hz) through the lesion for two months. The right radial nerves were treated as controls and regenerated without electrical stimulation. EMG activity was recorded intramuscularly from left and

Simultaneous Use of the Anterior Interosseous Nerve as Both a Target and Donor Nerve in Radial to Median Nerve Transfers.

Nerve transfers play a crucial role in the management of nerve injuries. I present a case where a young weightlifter had a devastating high median nerve injury resulting in absent thumb flexor pollicis longus function and absent flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and flexor digitorum profundus function of the index finger. An extensor carpi radialis brevis branch of the radial nerve was transferred to the anterior interosseous nerve (AIN), and the distal AIN was then mobilized and reflected from distal to proximal to supply a second nerve transfer to an FDS-index branch of the median nerve.

Anconeus Muscle Transfer to Correct or Prevent Wrist Radial Deviation in Radial and Posterior Interosseous Nerve Injuries.

PURPOSE: Wrist radial deviation is a possible complication of tendon transfer for restoration of wrist extension in cases of radial nerve paralysis. In posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) injury, this is because of the imbalance caused by the intact extensor carpi radialis longus and paralysis of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU). This deformity may also occur following transfer of the pronator teres (PT) to the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) for radial nerve palsy. To address wrist radial deviation, we propose transferring the anconeus muscle, extended by the intermuscular septum between

Radial nerve palsy in the newborn combined with congenital radial head dislocation: Case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Radial nerve palsy in the newborn and congenital radial head dislocation (CRHD) are both rare disorders, and early diagnosis is challenging. We reported a case of an infant with concurrent presence of these 2 diseases and provide a comprehensive review of the relevant literature. The purpose of the study is to share diagnostic and treatment experiences and provide potentially valuable insights. PATIENT CONCERNS: A newborn has both radial nerve palsy and CRHD, characterized by limited wrist and fingers extension but normal flexion, normal shoulder and elbow movement on the affected

[Mononeuropathy of dorsal interosseous nerve: compression by return radial arteries].

UNLABELLED: Among many causes of compression neuropathies involving the radial nerve, compression of the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) by the returning radial arteries is rare. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical instrumental characteristics of cases of mononeuropathy caused by compression of the return radial arteries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two observations with neuropathy of the deep branch of the radial nerve, manifested by weakness in the corresponding muscles, inconsistent pain syndrome with previous stereotypic (recurring) physical activity are presented. RESULTS: According to th

Elicited Finger and Wrist Extension Through Transcutaneous Radial Nerve Stimulation.

Individuals with neurological disorders, such as stroke or spinal cord injury, often have weakness and/or spasticity in their hand and wrist muscles, which can lead to impaired ability to extend their fingers and wrists. Functional electrical stimulation can help to restore these motor functions. However, the conventional stimulation method can lead to fast muscle fatigue and limited movements due to a non-physiological recruitment of motor units and a limited recruitment of deep muscles. In this paper, we investigated the feasibility of eliciting various hand opening and wrist extension movem

Surgical management and outcome of iatrogenic radial nerve injection injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Iatrogenic injury to the radial nerve can occur following intramuscular or intravenous injections of the upper extremity. In this study, we review the injury mechanism, operative techniques, and outcomes of patients evaluated for radial nerve injection injuries. METHODS: Data from 33 patients evaluated by the senior authors (DGK and DHK) from 1970-2011 with radial nerve injection injuries were reviewed retrospectively. All patients had injury of the nerve during injection. All corrective operations involved the use of direct intraoperative nerve action potential (NAP) recordings an

The "double wrist flexor" tendon transfer for radial nerve palsy.

In isolated high radial nerve palsy, it is traditionally taught that one should not use both wrist flexors for tendon transfers. Over the last 17 years, the author has encountered 4 unusual cases of high radial nerve palsy with concurrent direct injury to the pronator teres, flexor digitorum superficialis, and the palmaris longus in the proximal forearm. In these cases, the author used both wrist flexors, namely, the flexor carpi radialis to restore wrist extension and the flexor carpi ulnaris to restore finger/thumb extension as well as thumb radial abduction. Despite the major loss of wrist

Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the radial nerve: case report.

OBJECTIVE: Primary lymphomas of peripheral nerves are extremely rare, with the bulk of the literature being case reports. The nerve most commonly affected is the sciatic nerve, with 9 cases reported. To date, there are no reports in the English literature of isolated involvement of the radial nerve by a primary lymphoma. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman with a history of osteoporosis, irritable bowel disease, asthma, and Graves' disease presented with a 6-month history of paresthesia in her left superficial sensory radial nerve territory, weakness of thumb extension, and localized p

Unusual compression neuropathies of the forearm, part I: radial nerve.

Peripheral compression neuropathies are familiar to the hand surgeon. Although compression neuropathies of the forearm are far less common than those of the wrist (namely, carpal tunnel syndrome), for the patient suffering from one of these neuropathies, a missed diagnosis has far-reaching consequences. In this 2-part review (I: Radial Nerve; II: Median Nerve), several compression neuropathies of the forearm are examined. We will first discuss compression neuropathies affecting the radial nerve: (1) posterior interosseous nerve syndrome, (2) radial tunnel syndrome, and (3) superficial radial n
