Radiation retinopathy after orbital irradiation for Graves' ophthalmopathy.

Recent reports indicate that orbital irradiation for Graves' ophthalmopathy is sometimes beneficial, particularly for dysthyroid optic neuropathy, and is not associated with serious complications. We are aware, however, of four patients who were found to have radiation retinopathy after orbital irradiation for Grave's ophthalmopathy. All four patients have decreased central acuity, and three of the four are legally blind in one or both eyes. Computer reconstruction of the dosimetry, based on computed tomography and beam profiles, shows that errors in dosage calculations and radiotherapy techni

Novel reject and effective dose analysis in digital radiography-a Finnish imaging department study.

Reject rate analysis focuses traditionally on frequency rather than radiation impact, thus limiting its alignment with radiation protection goals. This study examined reject rates by body part in digital radiography at a Finnish imaging department and introduced an evaluation of their relative contribution to patients' additional radiation exposure by calculating a median effective dose-weighted reject rate. The resulting metric may serve as a practical tool to support optimization of radiation burden. The pelvic region and lumbar spine rejected radiographs contributed the highest additional r

Real-time phase-dependent occupational radiation exposure analysis in full-endoscopic spine surgery.

Full-endoscopic spine surgery performed under local anesthesia offers clinical advantages, particularly for elderly patients. However, its reliance on fluoroscopy raises concerns about occupational radiation exposure. Although several studies have evaluated cumulative radiation dose, real-time data identifying specific high-risk phases of surgery remain limited. This study aimed to clarify phase-dependent scatter radiation patterns and identify targets for effective protection. We analyzed real-time personal dose equivalent, Hp(10), measured over the protective apron (over-apron Hp(10)) in 28

Radiation environment on TGO Mars orbit during solar particle events in January-October 2024. Corresponding solar eruptions and GOES proton fluxes data.

The dosimeter Liulin-MO for measuring the radiation environment on board the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) is a module in the Fine Resolution Epithermal Neutron Detector (FREND). A number of solar energetic particle (SEP) events were observed in Mars orbit from July 2021 to 2024 during the increasing phase and close to the maximum of the 25th solar cycle activity. The results from the SEPs measurements obtained in 2021-2023 by Liulin-MO have been previously reported. Here we present the Liulin-MO results from the observation of the radiation parameters of the SEP events during January- Octob

Cumulative dose: A simple infographic for referrers and patients.

Communicating radiation risks effectively is critical in imaging examinations, especially for ensuring the benefit-risk justification among radiologists, medical physicists, referrers, radiation technologists, and patients. Imaging modalities such as CT, fluoroscopic guided interventions, and PET/CT pose challenges due to high cumulative radiation exposure in patients who require recurrent imaging. In recent years there has been a strong emphasis on assessing the cumulative effective doses (CED) in patients who undergo recurrent imaging for disease surveillance. In addition, while referral gui

Rapid Radiation Dose Estimation Techniques for Initial Patient Triage.

Emergency responders and health physicists need to make quick decisions on initial analyses and observations when responding to a radiological or nuclear emergency. Health physicists use complicated mathematical equations and dose calculation algorithms to create precise and detailed dose reconstructions, but this is dependent upon the release of information regarding the exposure or contamination scenario. The Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site employs and teaches certain "rules of thumb" dose estimation techniques for both internal and external exposures, which may help in e

Trends in the use of radiation protection and radiation exposure of European endourologists: a prospective trial from the EULIS-YAU Endourology Group.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the radiation exposure for the urology staff during endourology, our aim was to evaluate the trends of radiation protection in the operation room by endourologists from European centers and to estimate their annual radiation. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter study involving experienced endourologists from different European centers to evaluate whether the protection and threshold doses recommended by the International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP) were being followed. A 36-question survey was completed on the use of fluoroscopy and radiation protection. Ann

Radiation measurements in the International Space Station, Columbus module, in 2020-2022 with the LIDAL detector.

The Light Ion Detector for ALTEA (LIDAL) is a new instrument designed to measure flux, energy spectra and Time of Flight of ions in a space habitat. It was installed in the International Space Station (Columbus) on January 19, 2020 and it is still operating. This paper presents the results of LIDAL measurements in the first 17 months of operation (01/2020-05/2022). Particle flux, dose rate, Time of Flight and spectra are presented and studied in the three ISS orthogonal directions and in the different geomagnetic regions (high latitude, low latitude, and South Atlantic Anomaly, SAA). The resul

Results from the Radiation Assessment Detector on the International Space Station, Part 2: The fast neutron detector.

We report the results of the first six years of measurements of so-called fast neutrons on the International Space Station (ISS) with the Radiation Assessment Detector (ISS-RAD), spanning the period from February 2016 to February 2022. ISS-RAD combines two sensor heads, one nearly identical to the single sensor head in the Mars Science Laboratory RAD (MSL-RAD). The latter is described in a companion article to this one. The novel sensor is the FND, or fast neutron detector, designed to measure neutrons with energies in the range from 200 keV to about 8 MeV. ISS-RAD was deployed in February 201

Role of individual dosimetry for affected residents in postaccident recovery: the Fukushima experience.

The accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on 11 March 2011 released radioactive material into the atmosphere, and contaminated land in Fukushima and several neighbouring prefectures. During rehabilitation, it is important to accurately understand and determine individual external doses to allow individuals to make informed decisions about whether or not to return to the affected areas. Personal dosimeters (D-Shuttle), used together with a global positioning system and geographic information system device, can provide realistic individual external doses and associated individual ext

Staying Safe from Radiation Exposure in Cath Lab: A Review.

A successful cardiac catheterization Laboratory radiation safety program must manage patient and staff safety by reducing exposure to ionizing radiation to a level that is as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). The first step in radiation safety is to avoid unnecessary use of ionizing radiation by justification of exposure, one of the basic principles of radiation protection. All individuals involved in fluoroscopic imaging procedures should familiarize themselves to the measures to protect themselves from exposure to unsafe doses of ionizing radiation.

[Measures for reducing exposure to scattered radiation in urologic roentgen diagnosis].

A simple device to reduce the urologic examiner's exposure to radiation is presented. The doses the examiner and his assistant staff are exposed to performing various methods of urologic radiodiagnosis were measured and the following exposure to radiation determined with and without radioprotective device. The measurements demonstrate, that already by simple measures considerable reduction of the exposure to radiation can be obtained for examiner and assistant personnel. The frequently neglected importance of scattered radiation resulting from urologic radiography is discussed.

Compensation filtration in paediatric double contrast barium enema examinations.

A prospective study of double contrast barium enema examinations performed on 42 children aged 2.5-19 years (mean age 12.3 years) showed that compensation filtration improved the radiographic quality in 32 (76%) of the examinations; it also reduced radiation dosage in all patients. In no examination was the use of a filter deleterious. Compensation filtration is recommended for all paediatric double contrast barium enema examinations to improve radiographic quality and reduce radiation dosage.

Optimized radiological alert thresholds based on device dosimetric information and peak skin dose in vascular fluoroscopically guided intervention.

OBJECTIVES: The National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) report no. 168 recommended that during fluoroscopically guided interventions (FGIs), each patient should be monitored when one of the following thresholds is reached: an air kerma > 5 Gy, a kerma area product (KAP) > 500 Gy.cm2, a fluoroscopy time > 60 min, or a peak skin dose (PSD) > 3 Gy. Whereas PSD is the most accurate metric regarding the prevention of radiological risks, it remains the most difficult parameter to assess. We aimed to evaluate the relevance of the other, more accessible metrics and propose new optimized thresh

Eye sequelae following external irradiation.

The early reactions of the eye to radiation are conjunctivitis and, with higher doses, corneal damage. The inflammatory reactions are transient and remit within a few weeks after the end of radiotherapy. Doses above 60 Gy can produce corneal ulcerations with the risk of perforation and loss of the eye. The most frequent late reaction of the eye is cataract of the lens. The tolerance dose (about 5 Gy) is extremely low and the latent period varies from 6 months to 3 years. The lens in children has a much lower tolerance. The increasing potential for optical support and ophthalmic surgery over re

Effects of ionizing radiation on the blood brain barrier permeability to pharmacologically active substances.

Ionizing radiation can impair the integrity of the blood brain barrier (BBB). Data on early and late damage after brain irradiation are usually reported separately, yet a gradual transition between these two types has become evident. Signs appearing within 3 weeks after irradiation are considered to be early manifestations. The mechanism of radiation-effected integrity impairment of the BBB is discussed in relation to changes in morphological structures forming the BBB, the endothelium of intracerebral vessels, and in the surrounding astrocytes. Alterations in the function of the BBB are manif
