Photon energy readings in OSL dosimeter filters: an application to retrospective dose estimation for nuclear medicine workers.

This work investigates the applicability of using data from personal monitoring dosimeters to assess photon energies to which medical workers were exposed. Such determinations would be important for retrospective assessments of organ doses to be used in occupational radiation epidemiology studies, particularly in the absence of work history or other information regarding the energy of the radiation source. Monthly personal dose equivalents and filter ratios under two different metallic filters contained in the Luxel+® dosimeter were collected from Landauer, Inc. from 19 nuclear medicine (NM) t

Development and Evaluation of a Body-Worn Dosimeter for Continuous and Impulsive Noise.

Noise exposure is encountered nearly everyday in both recreational and occupational settings, and can lead to a number of health concerns including hearing-loss, tinnitus, social-isolation and possibly dementia. Although guidelines exist to protect workers from noise, it remains a challenge to accurately quantify the noise exposure experienced by an individual due to the complexity and non-stationarity of noise sources. This is especially true for impulsive noise sources, such as weapons fire and industrial impact noise which are difficult to quantify due to technical challenges relating to se

A disposable OSL dosimeter for in vivo measurement of rectum dose during brachytherapy.

PURPOSE: We aimed to develop a disposable rectum dosimeter and to demonstrate its ability to measure exposure dose to the rectum during brachytherapy for cervical cancer treatment using high-dose rate 192 Ir. Our rectum dosimeter measures the dose with an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sheet which was furled to a catheter. The catheter we used is 6 mm in diameter; therefore, it is much less invasive than other rectum dosimeters. The rectum dosimeter developed in this study has the characteristics of being inexpensive and disposable. It is also an easy-to-use detector that can be indiv

Quantification of Radiation Exposure in Canadian Orthopaedic Surgery Residents.

INTRODUCTION: Natural radiation exposure in the general population averages 3 milliSieverts (mSv) annually; however, radiation exposure in orthopaedic residents is not well defined. Despite protective measures, evidence of radiation-related diseases in orthopaedic surgeons is increasing. The purpose of this study was to quantify radiation exposure in orthopaedic residents and to determine the variability of exposure among post graduate year (PGY) of residency. METHODS: Monthly radiation exposure was measured prospectively over a 12-month period in orthopaedic surgery residents from a single p

Operators' radiation exposure reduction during cardiac catheterization using a removable shield.

Cardiac catheterization through radial access is associated with significant ionizing radiation exposure for the operator. We aimed at evaluating whether a removable shield placed upon the patient could impact favorably on annual radiation exposure for the operator. We designed a pre-post study comparing radiation exposure in a total of five operators under standard protection procedures (first period) and after applying a removable shield (second period). Each period included all the procedures performed in 1 year. Radiation exposure was measured through three dosimeters on each operator. A t

Elevated Radiation Exposure Associated With Above Surface Flat Detector Mini C-Arm Use.

Background: This study aims to test the hypothesis that: (1) radiation exposure is increased with the intended use of Flat Surface Image Intensifier (FSII) units above the operative surface compared with the traditional below-table configuration; (2) this differential increases in a dose-dependent manner; and (3) radiation exposure varies with body part and proximity to the radiation source. Methods: A surgeon mannequin was seated at a radiolucent hand table, positioned for volar distal radius plating. Thermoluminescent dosimeters measured exposure to the eyes, thyroid, chest, hand, and groin,

The 15-Country Collaborative Study of Cancer Risk among Radiation Workers in the Nuclear Industry: study of errors in dosimetry.

To provide direct estimates of cancer risk after low-dose protracted exposure to ionizing radiation, a large-scale epidemiological study of nuclear industry workers was conducted in 15 countries. As part of this study, identification and quantification of errors in historical recorded doses was conducted based on a review of dosimetric practices and technologies in participating facilities. The main sources of errors on doses from "high-energy" photons (100-3000 keV) were identified as the response of dosimeters in workplace exposure conditions and historical calibration practices. Errors rela

Comparison of cytogenetic tests for monitoring overexposures from ionizing radiation.

The frequencies of chromosome aberrations induced by ionizing radiations were studied for use in assessment of doses in radiation accidents. The dose-effect relationships of formations of dicentric and acentric aberrations are compared with that of micronuclei detected in cultured human lymphocytes. The data suggest the applicability of micronucleus test as "biological dosimeter" with a similar sensitivity like the widely used dicentric analysis.

Absorbed dose rate dependence for PEO-Fricke dosimeter using sodium thiocyanate as indicator.

Fricke solution, composed of ferrous ammonium sulfate in an aqueous sulfuric acid medium, is widely used as a chemical dosimeter for the quantification of radiological parameters such as exposure, kerma, and absorbed dose. The conventional Fricke dosimeter has been modified by the addition of a gelling agent to allow three-dimensional absorbed dose measurements. Additionally, the incorporation of ion indicators, as xylenol orange, improves gel stability and enables the use of optical analyzers for dosimetric calculations. In this study, the response of a Fricke gel dosimeter using polyethylene

Radiographic fallopian tube recanalization: absorbed ovarian radiation dose.

Absorbed radiation dose to the ovaries during radiographic fallopian tube recanalization was estimated in 29 patients with use of thermoluminescent dosimeters placed in the vaginal fornix. With an average fluoroscopic time of 8.5 minutes +/- 5.5 and an average of 14 +/- 5 105-mm spot radiographs obtained, the average absorbed dose to the ovaries was 8.5 mGy +/- 5.6 (0.85 rad +/- 0.56). Technical guidelines for keeping patient radiation exposure to a minimum during this new interventional procedure are suggested.

Occupational exposure to radiation among health workers: Genome integrity and predictors of exposure.

The current study aimed to investigate genomic instabilities in healthcare workers who may experience varying levels of radiation exposure through various radiological procedures. It also sought to determine if factors related to the work environment and dosimeter reading could effectively explain the observed genomic instabilities. Utilizing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay (CBMN) on peripheral blood lymphocytes, we assessed a spectrum of genomic aberrations, including nucleoplasmic bridge (NPB), nuclear budding (NBUD), micronucleus (MN) formation, and total DNA damage (TDD). Dermatologic radiotherapy and thyroid cancer. Dose measurements and risk quantification.

Thyroid doses for various dermatologic radiation techniques were measured with thermoluminescent dosimeters and ionization rate meters in an Alderson-Rando anthropomorphic phantom. The effects of changes in radiation quality and of the use or nonuse of treatment cones and thyroid shields were evaluated in detail. The results indicate that the potential risk of radiogenic thyroid cancer is very small when proper radiation protection measures are used. The probability of radiogenic thyroid cancer developing and the potential mortality risk were assessed quantitatively for each measurement. The q

Cumulative Exposure to Ionizing Radiation Among Surgeons During Intraoperative Cholangiography.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative cholangiography (IOC), even though is an important tool in biliary surgery, it is still a matter of debate when used as a routine procedure, this supported in the surgical and legal safety for the patient and the surgeon. We do not have knowledge of the real expositional risk of the surgeon to ionizing radiation (IR) during the cholangiography procedure, because many surgeons do not use protection and dosimeters, so we cannot determine occupational radiation exposure. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort study was conducted to assess the radiation exposure of a group

Biodosimetry results from space flight Mir-18.

Astronauts are classified as radiation workers due to the presence of ionizing radiation in space. For the assessment of health risks, physical dosimetry has been indispensable. However, the change of the location of dosimeters on the crew members, the variation in dose rate with location inside the spacecraft and the unknown biological effects of microgravity can introduce significant uncertainties in estimating exposure. To circumvent such uncertainty, a study on the cytogenetic effects of space radiation in human lymphocytes was proposed and conducted for Mir-18, a 115-day mission. This stu

Suspended Lead Suits and Radiation Exposure in Interventional Echocardiographers.

IMPORTANCE: Percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is frequently performed with an interventional echocardiographer (IE) in close proximity to the patient and radiation source, increasing the risk for occupational radiation exposure. Yet optimal radiation shielding methods for IEs remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether using a suspended lead suit reduces IE radiation dose compared with traditional lead apron shielding during LAAO procedures. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this blinded cross-sectional study, IE radiation exposure data were prospectively collected dur

Eye lens radiation exposure in paediatric interventional treatment of retinoblastoma.

Retinoblastoma represents 3% of cancers in children under fifteen years of age. The standard paediatric treatment for saving the affected eye is supraselective intra-arterial chemotherapy performed in interventional rooms. In order to address the radiation toxicity due to the angiography, the aim of this study was to determine the typical dose value corresponding to the procedure, estimate the paediatric patients' eye lens dose and study the relationship between dose indicators and dose to the lens. An automatic dose management software was installed in two interventional rooms to obtain the d
