From October 19 through October 24, 2003, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology held its 45th Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The meeting was devoted to the presentation of advances in the management of malignant diseases with radiation modalities. The meeting brought together investigators, clinicians, policy makers and professionals interested in the science and impact of radiation on cancerous disease. This report examines the advances in combined modality approaches (i.e., the use of radiation therapy and chemotherapy) for the treatment of malignant disease. T

Pineal tumor management in pediatric patients must be based on close co-operation between oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, neurologists, ophthalmologists, and endocrinologists. Radiation therapy (RT) remains critical in most situations and should be assessed as soon as the diagnosis is made, in order to optimize the radiation technique. This paper will focus on RT modalities, indications, as well as modalities in main pediatric pineal tumors (germ cell tumors and pineal parenchyma tumors). RT modalities are presently being debated and new RT techniques (intensity-modulated RT, pro

BACKGROUND: American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) guidelines recommend only office visits and mammograms as the primary modalities for patient surveillance after treatment for breast carcinoma. This study aimed to quantify differences in posttreatment surveillance among medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgeons.
METHODS: We e-mailed a survey to the 3,245 ASCO members who identified themselves as having breast cancer as a major focus of their practices. Questions assessed the frequency of use of 12 specific surveillance modalities for 5 posttreatment years.
RESULTS: Of 1

Total skin electron radiation has proven efficacy in treating MF. It is a complex technique that requires a dedicated radiation team, involving physicists, radiotherapists, and radiation oncologists. A center must treat a sufficiently high volume of patients to justify the development of TSE, with appropriate organization, time, and expense. The radiation team should be an integral part of a multidisciplinary clinical group, including medical oncologists, dermatologists, pathologists, and nurses. In these contexts, TSE has appropriately been developed in a limited number of centers. Cooperatio

The UK's National Health Service faces an acute cancer workforce deficit across all specialities. The Royal College of Radiologists reports a 17% shortfall in consultant clinical oncologists today, which is projected to reach 26% by 2030. At the same time, cancer incidence is rising, with over half a million new diagnoses in the UK expected annually by 2040, many of whom will need radiotherapy at some point in their care. The UK's dual-trained clinical oncology model, requiring competence in both radiotherapy and systemic therapy, sets it apart from many other countries. Given the increasing c

PURPOSE: Tobacco and alcohol use influence cancer risk as well as treatment outcomes, specifically for esophageal and gastric cancer patients. Therefore, it is an important topic to discuss during consultations. This study aims to uncover medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists' communication about substance use, i.e., tobacco and alcohol use, in simulated consultations about curative and palliative esophagogastric cancer treatment.
METHODS: Secondary analyses were performed on n = 40 standardized patient assessments (SPAs) collected in three Dutch clinical studies. Simulated patients wi

PURPOSE: Chemoradiation remains a challenge in women living with HIV (WLWH) and cervical cancer primarily because of concerns regarding immune status. With limited literature available to help guide the management of these patients, clinical practices among oncologists are variable across India. Hence, we conducted a survey among radiation oncologists in India to assess the patterns of current practices of treating cervical cancer with chemoradiation in WLWH.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire consisting of 12 questions related to the treatment of cervical cancer in WLWH was distributed t

Brachytherapy (BT), the use of a locally placed or implanted radioactive source for treatment of an adjacent tumor, is an important component in the treatment of patients with both early- and advanced-stage cervical cancer and is increasingly part of the standard treatment protocol. When it is feasible, many radiation oncologists choose to include a magnetic resonance (MR) imaging examination for planning BT treatment (ie, an MR imaging examination after placement of the applicator but before radiation dosing). MR imaging provides excellent soft-tissue contrast and allows radiation oncologists

PURPOSE: The focal radiation therapy (RT) boost technique was shown in a phase III randomized controlled trial (RCT) to improve prostate cancer outcomes without increasing toxicity. This technique relies on the accurate delineation of prostate tumors on MRI. A recent prospective study evaluated radiation oncologists' accuracy when asked to delineate prostate tumors on MRI and demonstrated high variability in tumor contours. We sought to evaluate the impact of contour variability and inaccuracy on predicted clinical outcomes. We hypothesized that radiation oncologists' contour inaccuracies woul

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is rare in Japanese people, and only 30-40 patients develop the disease annually. To diagnose ES, molecular techniques that aim to detect characteristic fusion genes are commonly used in combination with conventional histological and immunohistochemical examinations. The treatment strategy for ES is characterized by multi-disciplinary collaboration between pediatric oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and orthopedic surgeons. In recent years, numerous large-scale national or international multi-institutional studies of ES have been performed. Pre- and po

Multi-modal therapies for gynecological cancers management may determine a wide range of side effects which depend on therapy-related factors and patient characteristics and comorbidities. Curative or adjuvant pelvic radiotherapy is linked with acute and late toxicity due to irradiation of organs at risk, as small and large bowel, rectum, bladder, pelvic bone, vagina and bone marrow. Successful toxicity management varies with its severity, Radiation Centre practice and experience and skills of radiation oncologists. This position paper was designed by the Italian Association of Radiation and C

The definition of 'head and neck cancer' (HNC) identifies squamous cell carcinoma arising from the pharynx, the larynx and the oral cavity. Most of them are induced by smoking and alcohol abuse, but tumours arising in the nasopharynx and in the oropharynx may be virus induced, Epstein-Barr virus and human papillomavirus, respectively. Medical oncologists are involved in HNC in locally advanced disease and in relapsed/metastatic disease not suitable for salvage radiotherapy or surgery. A close cooperation with surgeons and in particular with radiation oncologists is required in the first situat

PurposeTo estimate the supply and demand of current and future radiation therapy services by 2035 for Colombia. Methods and materialsThe present study was performed by surveying different radiation therapy services identified in Colombia through the Colombian Association of Radiation Oncology. The demand was estimated based on incident cases and published information on the use of radiation therapy by type of cancer. Future demand was estimated under the assumption that incidence rates do not change and therefore the change in the number of cases is due to the change in the age structure of the

This study aimed to examine the education and training needs of health care practitioners (HCPs) in the Philippines who encounter lung oligometastatic cancer patients. Lung oligometastatic disease is among the most common sites for cancer spread and has the most established practices for treating oligometastases. A modified version of the Hennessy-Hicks Training Needs Assessment Questionnaire was administered online to HCPs working in private and public centers in the Philippines. HCPs were recruited via purposive sampling. Twenty-seven HCPs completed the questionnaire (47% response rate). Res

Practice leaders surveyed in the 2017 ACR Human Resources Commission workforce survey reported that 25% of the radiologists or radiation oncologists they supervised had neck pain, 32% had low back pain, and 16% were dealing with a repetitive stress injury. The prevalence rates of these musculoskeletal ailments among radiologists and radiation oncologists were consistent with those reported in the literature in other populations. However, these prevalence rates may be underestimated because practice leaders, not the radiologists themselves, were surveyed, and the leaders may not be aware of all

BACKGROUND: Intermediate-risk prostate cancer (IR-PC) represents a heterogeneous group requiring nuanced treatment approaches, and recent advancements in radiotherapy (RT), androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), and prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography (PSMA-PET/CT) imaging have prompted growing interest in personalized, risk-adapted management strategies. This study by the Turkish Society for Radiation Oncology aims to examine radiation oncologists' practices in managing IR-PC, focusing on RT and imaging modalities to identify trends for personalized treatments.

PURPOSE: To determine the current patterns of practice in Japan and to investigate factors that may make clinicians reluctant to use single-fraction radiotherapy (SF-RT).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Members of the Japanese Radiation Oncology Study Group (JROSG) completed an Internet-based survey and described the radiotherapy dose fractionation they would recommend for four hypothetical cases describing patients with painful bone metastasis (BM). Case 1 described a patient with an uncomplicated painful BM in a non-weight-bearing site from non-small-cell lung cancer. Case 2 investigated whether man
