Longitudinal assessment of an AI-based software for interproximal caries detection in bitewing radiographs.

OBJECTIVE: AI-based technologies are increasingly integrated into dental diagnostics, showing promising performance in supporting radiographic interpretation and pathology detection. However, few studies have studied the evolution of these tools over time. Thus, understanding their longitudinal development is crucial to ensure clinical reliability and use. METHODS: This longitudinal observational study reassessed the dataset evaluated in 2021 and reanalyzed it in 2025 using the latest version of an AI-Based software. A total of 300 digital bitewing radiographs were examined, with clinical val

Near-infrared imaging in orthodontic intraoral scanners for early interproximal caries detection.

INTRODUCTION: Intraoral scanners commonly used in orthodontic offices now offer near-infrared imaging (NIRI) technology, advertised as a screening tool to identify interproximal caries. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of NIRI detection of interproximal carious lesions in a common intraoral scanner (iTero Element 5D; Align Technology, San Jose, Calif) with and without bitewing radiograph complement, compared with a microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) reference standard. METHODS: Extracted human posterior teeth (premolars and molars) were selected for early (noncavitat

Mesiodens in the primary dentition stage: a radiographic study.

Five hundred and forty-three Chinese patients in the primary dentition stage were evaluated for mesiodens with maxillary, anterior occlusal films. Compared with other studies, a higher prevalence was found, using different age-groups and diagnostic methods. The distributions of mesiodens by sex, location, and direction were also studied. Because mesiodens could interfere with normal development of the occlusion, especially in the early mixed dentition stage, early diagnosis, using appropriate radiographs during the primary dentition stage, could lead to more comprehensive treatment planning.

A variant of the Ekman-Westborg and Julin trait.

Ekman-Westborg and Julin is a trait that shows multiple macrodontia and multituberculism affecting only the teeth with no other anomalies (E-WJ). The aim of this report is to present a case which appears to manifest all the clinical signs of the E-WJ trait including odontoma formation. A 18-year-old girl with gingival inflammation particularly in the maxillary insicor area was referred to the authors' department. Panoramic, periapical and cephalometric radiographs were examined and complex odontoma associated with unerupted maxillary permanent lateral incisors was revealed. Intraoral examinati

AI-Dentify: deep learning for proximal caries detection on bitewing x-ray - HUNT4 Oral Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries diagnosis requires the manual inspection of diagnostic bitewing images of the patient, followed by a visual inspection and probing of the identified dental pieces with potential lesions. Yet the use of artificial intelligence, and in particular deep-learning, has the potential to aid in the diagnosis by providing a quick and informative analysis of the bitewing images. METHODS: A dataset of 13,887 bitewings from the HUNT4 Oral Health Study were annotated individually by six different experts, and used to train three different object detection deep-learning architectu

Sickle cell disease and pulpal necrosis: a review of the literature for the primary care dentist.

A case of difficult diagnosis of a patient with sickle cell disease and tooth pain fuelled a literature review by a primary care general dental practitioner. A literature search was conducted to review the relationship between sickle cell disease and pulpal necrosis. The results indicated statistically significant associations of sickle cell disease and tooth pain without any carious or traumatic pathology. It is important for the primary care dentist to be aware of the relationship between sickle cell disease and pulpal necrosis to prevent misdiagnosis and consequently mistreatment.

Determine the accuracy of CBCT reconstructed panoramic images in periodontal assessment.

OBJECTIVES: Periodontal probing and intraoral radiography are conventional methods for periodontal assessment. Evaluating periodontium using CBCT-reconstructed multiplanar or cross-sectional views is labor-intensive and time-consuming. The objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of CBCT-simulated panoramic projections for periodontal assessment and determine whether a more efficient evaluation method can be developed. METHODS: CBCTs taken at East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine from 2014-2023 were screened. The inclusion criteria were: (1) diagnostic-quality CBCT sca

Accuracy in diagnosing caries in young permanent molars using interproximal radiographic imaging and validation by artificial intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Caries lesions, in their early stages, can be challenging to identify clinically, as they often do not cause symptoms or are in areas that are difficult to access. Caries diagnosis involves high subjectivity and can lack consistency among professionals with different backgrounds and levels of experience. Discrepancies may occur between examiners or even with the same examiner at other times. With technological advancements, increasingly efficient methods for diagnosing dental caries are available, and new techniques and tools are under study. This study aims to evaluate the accurac

Radiation shielding in dental radiography.

The protective effect in the thyroid region from different types of radiation shielding at intraoral radiography has been studied as well as the reduction of the absorbed dose to the sternal and the gonadal regions. The shielding tested were the different types of leaded aprons, of which three had an attached leaded collar and the other two were used in combination with separate soft leaded collars. Furthermore one of the soft leaded collars and an unflexible horizontal leaded shield were tested separately. Two dental x-ray machines of 60 and 65 kVp with rectangular and circular tube collimato

Radiographic bone loss in a Scottish non-smoking type 1 diabetes mellitus population: A bitewing radiographic study.

BACKGROUND: The dental complications of uncontrolled diabetes include reduced salivary flow rate, candidiasis and periodontal manifestations. A recent meta-analysis concluded that diabetes patients have a significantly higher severity, but not extent, of destructive periodontal disease than non-diabetics. The authors reported that most type-1 diabetes studies using dental radiographic data have not controlled for confounding factors such as smoking. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare radiographic alveolar bone loss between type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and non-diabetes (NDM) partici

Multiple idiopathic cervical resorption: a diagnostic dilemma.

Multiple idiopathic cervical resorption is an uncommon condition, the etiology of which remains unknown. The case of a 36-year-old woman with idiopathic resorption in the cervical areas of multiple teeth is presented. Her medical history was noncontributory, but her dental history was valuable in reaching a diagnosis. Hematologic and endocrinal investigations were unremarkable, but a computed tomography scan revealed relevant information. The progression of the lesion and involvement of multiple teeth without any pattern or chronology are challenges faced when diagnosing and treating this cond

Occupational and patients effective radiation doses in dental imaging.

Ionizing radiation exposure from medical applications is increasing annually worldwide. It was estimated that 325 million dental procedures were performed in the United States. Radiation exposure from dental radiography consists of intraoral, panoramic, and 3D imaging cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. Recent studies reported an association between dental imaging procedures and increased cancer probability of brain and thyroid. Previous studies showed that some dental imaging practices exposed patients and staff to unnecessary radiation doses due to incorrect image acquisition and i
