A human case of spotted fever caused by Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest and its association to the tick Amblyomma ovale.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest has emerged in Brazil during the last 10 years, with three laboratory-confirmed human cases. While these cases were epidemiologically associated with the tick Amblyomma ovale, in none of them the tick specimens that bit the patients could be identified. RESULTS: We report a clinical case of spotted fever rickettsiosis that was acquired in an Atlantic forest area in Bahia state, northeast Brazil. The case was determined to be caused by R. parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest, based on molecular analysis of the crust removed from the tick

Wild terrestrial rainforest mammals as potential reservoirs for flaviviruses (yellow fever, dengue 2 and St Louis encephalitis viruses) in French Guiana.

A serological survey for yellow fever virus (YFV), dengue 2 virus (DENV-2), and St Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) was undertaken using a seroneutralization technique in 27 wild forest mammal species (574 individuals) in French Guiana. Evidence of yellow fever infection was observed in 10 species, with high prevalence recorded in howler monkey (18%) and agouti (20%). Antibodies against DENV-2 and SLEV were found sporadically in various species. This potential host diversity and the range of potential vectors might explain the behaviour of the viruses in epidemic outbreaks and the emergence of

Phylogenetic analyses and morphological studies reveal two new species of Biscogniauxia (Xylariales, Ascomycota) from Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, China.

The species diversity of the family Graphostromataceae is poorly understood in tropical regions. The present work concerns a survey of wood-inhabiting macrofungi from the Hainan Tropical Rainforest, which is located in south-central Hainan Province. This study introduces two new species of Biscogniauxia, viz., B. diaoluoshanensis sp. nov. and B. jianfengensis sp. nov., which are herein described based on morphological and molecular evidence. Morphologically, B. diaoluoshanensis is characterized by applanate stromata, ovoid to pyriform perithecia, and ascospores with a conspicuous straight, alm

The rice rat Euryoryzomys russatus, a competent amplifying host of Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest for the tick Amblyomma ovale.

Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest (SAR) is the etiological agent of a spotted fever group rickettsiosis in Brazil, where it is transmitted to humans by the tick Amblyomma ovale. A previous study demonstrated that R. parkeri SAR was successfully maintained in A. ovale ticks by transstadial and transovarial passages; however, because this agent induced lower reproduction rates in A. ovale, the participation of a vertebrate amplifier host, yet to be determined, was speculated. Since the rice rat Euryoryzomys russatus was demonstrated to be the most important host for immature stages o

Ant Interactions with Aroid Infructescences (Araceae) Used as Temporary Nesting Sites, Cohabiting with a Complex Endophagous Insect Community in a Neotropical Rainforest.

Ants are abundant and diverse in the tropics, nesting in different forest layers and utilizing a wide range of nesting sites, from specialized to opportunistic. To describe the floral interactions of endophagous insects in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve (Mexico), samples of Araceae infructescences were collected during an annual cycle at different altitudes. Ten species of Araceae belonging to the genera Dieffenbachia (1), Philodendron (5), Syngonium (3) and Xanthosoma (1) were investigated. A total of 334 infructescences were sampled, of which only 5.1% were found to be infested by ants. H

Comparative evaluation of Amblyomma ovale ticks infected and noninfected by Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest, the agent of an emerging rickettsiosis in Brazil.

In 2010, a novel spotted fever group rickettsiosis was reported in the Atlantic rainforest coast of Brazil. The etiological agent was identified as Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest, and the tick Amblyomma ovale was incriminated as the presumed vector. The present study evaluated under laboratory conditions four colonies of A. ovale: two started from engorged females that were naturally infected by Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest (designated as infected groups); the two others started from noninfected females (designated as control groups). All colonies were reared in paralle

Triplinones A-H: Anti-Inflammatory Arylalkenyl α,β-Unsaturated-δ-Lactones Isolated from the Leaves of Australian Rainforest Plant Cryptocarya triplinervis (Lauraceae).

Our ongoing exploration of Australian rainforest plants for the biodiscovery of anti-inflammatory agents led to the isolation and structural elucidation of eight new arylalkenyl α,β-unsaturated-δ-lactones, triplinones A-H (1-8), from the leaves of the Australian rainforest plant Cryptocarya triplinervis B. Hyland (Lauraceae). The chemical structures of these compounds were established by NMR spectroscopic data analysis, while their relative and absolute configurations were established using a combination of Mosher ester analysis utilizing both Riguera's and Kishi's methods, ECD experiments, an

Identities revealed: female of Anastrepha cruzi Lima, 1934 and Anastrepha caballeroi Norrbom, 2015 (Diptera, Tephritidae) found in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest.

Anastrepha cruzi was described in 1934, from a specimen without an abdomen. The holotype is the only known record for this species, collected in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest (location unknown). However, during fruit fly surveys with McPhail-type traps on the campus of the Federal University of Amazonas in Manaus (state of Amazonas), two females were identified as A. cruzi, based on thoracic and wing patterns. These females are described in detail here, including the aculeus tip, to clarify the identity and facilitate recognition of A. cruzi. A single female of A. caballeroi Norrbom was also

Molecular analyses reveal an abundant diversity of ticks and rickettsial agents associated with wild birds in two regions of primary Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest.

Brazilian wild birds are recognized as frequent and important hosts for immature stages of more than half of the 32 recognized species of Amblyomma ticks recorded in that country. Several species of Amblyomma harbor rickettsial agents, including members of the spotted fever group (SFG). Most studies on this topic relied primarily on morphological characterization and reported large portions of the collected ticks at the genus rather than species level. Clearly, this factor may have contributed to an underestimation of tick diversity and distribution and makes comparisons between studies diffic

Assessing the diversity of freshwater fish trematodes from Laguna Escondida, Los Tuxtlas tropical rainforest, Mexico, using morphology and 28S rDNA sequences as barcodes.

Despite a great effort made for almost 90 years, the diversity of freshwater fish trematodes in Mexico is still far from being fully known. The addition of molecular data to the description of trematode diversity in the last two decades added the potential to establish more robust species limits and a more accurate biodiversity estimation, but also led in some instances to the recognition of cryptic species complexes. Here, we used sequences of the large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal gene (28S rRNA) as barcodes, and morphological data, to assess the diversity of freshwater fish trematodes f

Spathaspora cesarfonsecae sp. nov., a xylose-fermenting yeast isolated from gut of passalid beetles and rotting wood in the Amazonian rainforest biome.

Two yeast isolates of a novel d-xylose-fermenting species were obtained from rotting wood and gut of a passalid beetle collected in the Brazilian Amazonian Rainforest biome. Sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer-5.8S region and the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene showed that the isolates represent a novel species of the genus Spathaspora, phylogenetically related to Spathaspora passalidarum. The yeast produced asci with a single malformed elongated ascospore with curved ends. The name Spathaspora cesarfonsecae sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate the novel species. The holotyp

Combined venomics, venom gland transcriptomics, bioactivities, and antivenomics of two Bothrops jararaca populations from geographic isolated regions within the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest.

Bothrops jararaca is a slender and semi-arboreal medically relevant pit viper species endemic to tropical and subtropical forests in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina (Misiones). Within its geographic range, it is often abundant and is an important cause of snakebite. Although no subspecies are currently recognized, geographic analyses have revealed the existence of two well-supported B. jararaca clades that diverged during the Pliocene ~3.8Mya and currently display a southeastern (SE) and a southern (S) Atlantic rainforest (Mata Atlântica) distribution. The spectrum, geographi

Do carbon-based defences reduce foliar damage? Habitat-related effects on tree seedling performance in a temperate rainforest of Chiloé Island, Chile.

Carbon-based secondary compounds (CBSCs), such as phenols or tannins, have been considered as one of the most important and general chemical barriers of woody plants against a diverse array of herbivores. Herbivory has been described as a critical factor affecting the growth and survival of newly established tree seedlings or juveniles then, the presence of secondary metabolites as defences against herbivores should be a primary strategy to reduce foliar damage. We examined whether light-induced changes in leaf phenolic chemistry affected insect herbivory on seedlings of two rainforest tree sp

Turnover-Dominated β-Diversity and Its Temperature and Trophic Drivers of Scarabaeoidea Assemblages Along an Elevational Gradient in a Tropical Island Rainforest in China.

Mountains serve as ideal natural laboratories for investigating biodiversity patterns along elevational gradients. This study examined α-diversity (species richness and abundance) and β-diversity (overall compositional dissimilarity and its turnover and nestedness) of Scarabaeoidea along an elevational gradient in a tropical rainforest, China. Scarabaeoidea assemblages were sampled continuously from early March to late November 2024 across 32 plots along an elevational gradient (371-1472 m a.s.l.) using ground and canopy traps. The aims were to evaluate the effects of potential drivers (temper

The more, the merrier: a new colonial species of the orb weaving spider genus Leucauge White, 1841 (Araneae: Tetragnathidae) from the Amazon rainforest.

A new Leucauge species, widespread in the Amazon rainforest, is described and illustrated. Leucauge behemoth n. sp. lives in colonies, usually positioned above turbulent waters. Both males and females have a unique color pattern, especially on the abdomen, which makes this species easily identifiable. Males are distinguished from most congeners by the long hook of the cymbium and from their closest relatives by the lack of a cymbial dorsobasal process. Females of this species differ from their congeners by the presence of a rounded ventral process in the epigynum. Leucauge argyroaffins Soares
