Adult attachment as a predictor of posttraumatic stress and dissociation.

This study examined whether K. Bartholomew's (1990) self-report dimensions of adult attachment (secure, dismissing, preoccupied, and fearful) mediate or moderate links from victimization/abuse to posttraumatic stress and dissociation. Participants were 199 college women with and without a history of childhood physical abuse, childhood sexual victimization, and adolescent/adult sexual victimization. Path analysis revealed no significant mediation effects for attachment; however, hierarchical multiple linear regression indicated that dismissing attachment moderated the link between victimization

Mentalizing language development in a longitudinal attachment sample: implications for alexithymia.

BACKGROUND: The construct of alexithymia implies a deficit in symbolization for emotional, somatic, and mental states. However, the etiologic factors for alexithymia have not yet been fully elucidated. The present study investigated the use of mentalizing language, i.e. the utterance of internal states, from a developmental perspective according to attachment organization and disorganization. METHODS: A longitudinal design across 4 time points was applied to a volunteer sample of 42 children. At 12 months, children were tested with the strange situation procedure, the standard measure of atta

Prognosis in paranoid disorders and mortality in reactive psychoses.

The present paper shows that the short-term prognosis of patients with paranoid disorders hospitalized nowadays is poor for the majority. The best prognosis is attached to patients with affective or other not specified psychotic disorders. Socio-vocational variables at the time of first admission contain more predictive value than clinical variables. The term reactive psychosis as a term with good prognosis is questioned and the findings of a mortality study are presented in support of this view when concerned with hospital populations.

Attachment insecurity modulates neural responses to psychological distress in OCD and healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Insecure attachment style has been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Psychological stress is known to aggravate OCD symptoms and activate the attachment system. Here, we investigated reactivity of attachment-related neurocircuitry under psychological distress in OCD patients. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with OCD and twenty-three healthy controls underwent fMRI scanning after psychological stress induction and a control condition in a cross-over design. Neural responses were measured during presentation of negative emotional faces. Attachment insecurity was meas

Coping style as a mediator between attachment and mental and physical health in patients suffering from morbid obesity.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of mental health problems and limitations in physical functioning is high in patients suffering from morbid obesity. The purpose of the current study was to examine the mediating role of coping style in the relationship between attachment representations and mental health and physical functioning in a morbidly obese population. METHOD: A total of 299 morbidly obese patients who were referred to the Slotervaart bariatric surgery unit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, completed self-report questionnaires assessing adult attachment style (Experiences in Close Relationship-Re

The differential diagnosis of impaired reciprocal social interaction in children: a review of disorders.

Impairment in reciprocal social interaction in children that is less severe than autism can be difficult to diagnose due to the variety of developmental pathways that may lead to this problem. Seven childhood disorders are reviewed that include impaired reciprocal interaction: multisystem developmental disorder, nonverbal learning disability syndrome, semantic-pragmatic disorder, attachment disorders (including a developmental theory of limbic system damage), multiplex developmental disorder, schizoid personality disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. Clarifica

In search of an adult attachment stress provocation to measure effect on the oxytocin system: a pilot validation study.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin is a promising biomarker for psychiatric conditions arising from early relational trauma, childhood maltreatment, and attachment dysregulation, including posttraumatic stress and dissociative disorders. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory pilot study examined plasma oxytocin as a biomarker for alterations in the attachment system. DESIGN: We used a single group, repeated-measures design with 15 women. The protocol used a film clip previously validated as a provocation to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. RESULTS: The repeated-measures ANOVA showed differences in oxytocin

Object attachment and emotions in hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Object attachment is a core feature of hoarding disorder (HD), but it also occurs in people without HD. It is therefore critical to clarify differences between normal and abnormal object attachment. Although previous studies show that HD is associated with high emotional reactivity, no study to date has examined the nature and intensity of discrete emotions in people with and without HD in relation to object attachment. METHOD: Individuals with HD (n = 93) and matched controls (n = 93) were recruited via MTurk. They identified and described a possession of low monetary va

A longitudinal study examining emotional, behavioural and attachment disorder symptoms of care-experienced young children: the role of early adversity and age at entry to care.

Care-experienced children are known to have histories of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Exposure to adversity is a well known risk factor for negative outcomes across the lifespan. However, very little is known about the adversity histories of young children in care, and how this may affect their emotional, behavioural, and attachment disorder outcomes over time. Data from 378 young children in foster care, aged 0-5 years old, as part of the Best Services Trial (BeST?) were used. Adversity experiences were identified and coded by reviewers from social care records. Age at entry to care

Social cognitive deficits and biases in maltreated adolescents in U.K. out-of-home care: Relation to disinhibited attachment disorder and psychopathology.

Children entering out-of-home (OoH) care have often experienced multiple forms of maltreatment and are at risk of psychiatric disorder and poor long-term outcome. Recent evidence shows high rates of disinhibited attachment disorder (DAD) among maltreated adolescents in U.K. OoH care (Kay & Green, 2013). This study aimed to further understand the mechanisms of outcome in this group through investigation of social cognitive functioning. Patterns of theory of mind (ToM) and social information processing were assessed alongside DAD behavior and psychopathology in 63 adolescents in U.K. OoH care (m

Can inattention/overactivity be an institutional deprivation syndrome?

Elevated rates of attention deficit and overactivity have been noted previously in samples of institution-reared children. This study examined the hypothesis that inattention/overactivity(I/O) might constitute a specific deprivation syndrome. One hundred and sixty five children adopted at varying ages (e.g., 0-42 months of age) into the UK following severe early deprivation were compared with 52 within-UK adoptees who did not suffer deprivation. The children were rated by teachers and parents on levels of I/O, conduct difficulties, and emotional difficulties using the Revised Rutter Scales. Da

Emotional dysregulation and attachment dimensions in female patients with bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine whether there is a difference in the dimensions of attachment and difference in emotional regulation between the group of female patients suffering from bulimia nervosa (BN) and the control group. We also wanted to examine whether emotional regulation has a mediating role in the relationship between dimensions of attachment and severity of BN symptoms. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 100 female participants from 15 to 25 years of age (M=20.40, SD=3.26). The clinical group consisted of 50 patients suffering from BN, and the c

Little orphan Anastasia. The analysis of an adopted Russian girl.

It is becoming commonplace for analysts to hear about or encounter in their clinical work adopted children from Korea, China, Eastern Europe, or Russia. There is wide variation in the orphanage experience from one area to another and also in the manner in which the transitional phase from orphanage to adoptive parents is carried out. Not surprisingly, the experience of being an orphan carries with it lifelong implications and repercussions, particularly in the area of self/object relations. Some of the problems of being an orphan are obvious at the time of adoption. Others unfold only in the c

Behavioural precursors of attachment representations in middle childhood and links with child social adaptation.

Concordance between age-6 attachment behaviour and age-8 doll play attachment representations during the school-age period, and associations between these measures and child social adaptation at school were examined. One hundred and twenty-nine 6-year-olds and their mothers participated in a separation/reunion protocol. Two years later, 104 children completed a doll play narrative task. Teachers evaluated child behaviour problems and prosocial behaviour at both ages. Results showed a significant four-way concordance between age-6 attachment behaviour and age-8 doll play classifications. Each o

Gambling and Attachment: The Mediating Role of Alexithymia in Adolescents and Young Adults.

Attachment and alexithymia play a central role in the appearance and persistence of pathological gambling and related comorbid addictive behaviours among adolescents and young adults. The aim of the present study was to explore the differences between problem gamblers and non-problem gamblers in gambling severity, spending, video gaming, alcohol and drugs use, attachment, and alexithymia, as well as the interaction among these variables. The study sample included 560 participants non-problem gamblers (mean age = 15.49 years) and 54 problem gamblers (mean age = 16.43 years). Gambling disorder (

Attachment states of mind and inferred childhood experiences in maltreated and comparison adolescents from low-income families.

This paper reports the first large-sample investigation of the maltreatment-related correlates of low-income adolescents' narratives about their childhood experiences with primary caregivers, as assessed with a modified version of the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and based on official reports of abuse and neglect (maltreated n = 214, nonmaltreated n = 140; M age = 16.7 years). Drawing on factor-analytic and taxometric evidence indicating that AAI narratives vary along two state of mind (i.e., dismissing and preoccupied) and two inferred childhood experience (i.e., maternal and paternal) di

The Child Attachment Interview: a psychometric study of reliability and discriminant validity.

While well-established attachment measures have been developed for infancy, early childhood, and adulthood, a "measurement gap" has been identified in middle childhood, where behavioral or representational measures are not yet sufficiently robust. This article documents the development of a new measure--the Child Attachment Interview (CAI)--which seeks to bridge this gap. The CAI is a semistructured interview, in which children are invited to describe their relationships with their primary caregivers. The coding system is informed by the Adult Attachment Interview and the Strange Situation Pro

[Unresolved attachment and remembered childhood trauma in patients undergoing psychosomatic inpatient treatment].

OBJECTIVE: Clinical populations are characterised by a high level of childhood trauma and unresolved attachment status ("U"). Unresolved attachment status indicates the inability to integrate attachment-related dangers. Little is known about the interaction of traumatic childhood experiences and an unresolved attachment status. METHOD: We administered the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP) to 45 newly admitted psychosomatic inpatients. Childhood trauma (CTQ) and distress were assessed by self-report questionnaires, and cognitive-emotional development was evaluated with the Level

Genetic, environmental and gender influences on attachment disorder behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Despite current interest in attachment disorder, there is concern about its discrimination from other disorders and an unproven assumption of an environmental aetiology. AIMS: To test whether behaviours suggestive of attachment disorder are distinct from other childhood behavioural and emotional problems and are solely environmentally determined. METHOD: In a community sample of 13,472 twins, we carried out factor analysis of questionnaire items encompassing behaviours indicative of attachment disorder, conduct problems, hyperactivity and emotional difficulties. We used behaviour
