BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) places a profound burden on public health and individual wellbeing. Systemic inflammation may be important to the onset and maintenance of SAD, and anti-inflammatory treatments have shown promise in relieving symptoms of SAD. In the present study, we conducted secondary analyses on data from a randomized clinical trial to determine whether C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations and social anxiety symptoms decreased over the course of virtual reality exposure therapy, and whether changes in social anxiety symptoms as a function of treatment varied as a

This scoping review aimed to identify interventions utilizing virtual-reality-based exercise therapy in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Searches were conducted in four databases using descriptors related to virtual reality, exercise, and chronic musculoskeletal pain. Two reviewers screened the titles and abstracts of the studies to assess eligibility, with a third author resolving any discrepancies. Data were extracted and summarized in a narrative format by three independent raters. Clinical trials were evaluated using the PEDro scale to assess the effectiveness of virtual-reality

Mirror therapy is applied to reduce phantom pain and as a rehabilitation technique in post-stroke patients. Using Virtual Reality and head-mounted displays this therapy can be performed in virtual scenarios. However, for its efficient use in clinical settings, some hardware limitations need to be solved. A new system to perform mirror therapy in virtual scenarios for post-stroke patients is proposed. The system requires the patient a standalone virtual reality headset with hand-tracking features and for the rehabilitator an external computer or tablet device. The system provides functionalitie

BACKGROUND: In Cardiovascular Rehabilitation (CR), patient adherence to the maintenance phase is a major challenge. Virtual reality-based therapy (VRBT) promotes acute hemodynamic and autonomic repercussions similar to traditional rehabilitation and can increase patient adherence to the program. However, it is unknown whether the combination of VRBT to a traditional CR manages to maintain or even improve clinical and autonomic variables in long term.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze whether VRBT combination in a traditional CR can maintain or improve clinical and autonomic variables in cardiac patients

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a neoplasm characterized by BCR-ABL1, an oncoprotein with vital role in leukemogenesis. Its inhibition by tyrosine kinase inhibitors represents the main choice of treatment. However, therapeutic failure is worrying given the lack of pharmacological options. Pentacyclic triterpenes are phytochemicals with outstanding antitumoral properties and have also been explored as a basis for the design of potential leads. In this review, we have gathered and discuss data regarding both natural and semisynthetic pentacyclic triterpenes applied to CML cell treatment. We fo

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRE) has shown promising efficacy for the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and related comorbidities. However, most trials conducted to date were therapist-led, and little is known about the efficacy of self-guided VRE. Therefore, this randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to determine the efficacy of a self-directed VRE for SAD.
METHOD: Forty-four community-dwelling or undergraduate adults diagnosed with SAD based on the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview were randomly assigned to VRE designed to last four sessions or more

BACKGROUND: Physiotherapeutic rehabilitation is essential to improve functional mobility, muscular strength, balance and quality of life of stroke patients, but conventional techniques using repeated physical activities can soon become monotonous. The use of virtual reality (VR) in rehabilitation offers a possible alternative to the traditional methods of promoting improvements in muscle strength and balance. However, there is not yet consensus about which instruments should be used to assess the effectiveness of VR in stroke rehabilitation.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review to identi

Purpose: Measurement of simulator-related side effects (SSEs) is an integral component of competent and ethical use of virtual reality exposure (VRE), but common SSEs may overlap with symptoms of anxiety. Limited research exists about the frequency of SSEs during VRE treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and no research compares self-reported SSEs for those undergoing VRE with those participating in exposure therapy without virtual reality. This study compared the SSEs of active duty soldiers with PTSD randomly assigned to exposure therapy through traditional prolonged exposure o

Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental illness that poses significant challenges. While many pharmacological and psychosocial interventions are available, many treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients continue to suffer from persistent psychotic symptoms, notably auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH), which are highly disabling. This unmet clinical need requires new innovative treatment options. Recently, a psychological therapy using computerized technology has shown large therapeutic effects on AVH severity by enabling patients to engage in a dialogue with a computerized representatio

ImportanceAlthough augmented reality (AR) may improve functional outcomes after stroke, the added benefit of mirror therapy (MT) as a priming strategy before AR remains uncertain. A three-arm comparison of MT + AR, AR alone, and conventional therapy (CT) is needed to clarify whether MT priming provides additional benefit.ObjectiveTo examine whether AR, with or without MT priming, improves sensorimotor function, balance, quality of life, and self-efficacy after stroke.DesignSingle-blind randomized controlled trial with 3-month follow-up.SettingFive outpatient rehabilitation clinics.Participants

This convergent mixed-methods study examined extended reality (XR)-supported leisure participation among 12 long-term psychiatric inpatients completing an 8-week virtual reality and augmented reality program within occupational therapy. Flow experience and technology acceptance were assessed quantitatively alongside qualitative thematic analysis of weekly semi-structured interviews. Flow experience increased significantly (p < .05, r = .82), while technology acceptance remained stable. Perceived usefulness significantly predicted flow (R2 = .575); perceived ease of use did not. BACKGROUND: Mirror therapy (MT) and augmented reality (AR) are gaining popularity in stroke rehabilitation. MT uses mirror visual feedback to promote bilateral brain coupling and increase primary motor cortex excitability. AR offers an interactive context of practice for promoting motor and cognitive recovery. MT and AR may complement each other for hybrid interventions in stroke rehabilitation. This study investigated the benefits of MT-primed AR (MT + AR) versus AR group, relative to conventional therapy (CT) for individuals with stroke. METHOD: The study randomly assigned 45 stroke survivor

Mirror Therapy is a form of upper limb therapy in stroke, which consists on showing the mirrored symmetric movement of the unimpaired side using a mirror placed in the medial sagittal plane. The illusion of movement corresponding to the impaired extremity could facilitate neuroplasticity, and assists patients in regaining certain lost motor functions. Recent studies have shown the potential and benefit of translating this effective therapy in an immersive virtual reality (VR) environment, using head mounted display and hand tracking systems. This work investigates the feasibility to use myoele

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is a prevalent condition which is highly interrelated with social anxiety. PSA can be effectively treated with exposure therapy. Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is increasingly being explored as a novel and cost-effective mode of treatment. No previous randomized controlled trial has examined whether stand-alone 360° video VRET is an effective intervention for treating PSA and interrelated disorder relevant fears. Further, studies have not explored whether 360° video content influences VRET outcomes. Participants with high PSA (n = 51) were randomly alloca

The emotional processing theory of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) posits that avoidance is central to PTSD development and maintenance. Prolonged exposure (PE) therapy, which clinically focuses on avoidance reduction, has strong empirical support as a PTSD treatment. Virtual reality exposure (VRE) has been utilized to accelerate avoidance reduction by increasing multisensory engagement. Although some exposure therapy studies have found associations between avoidance and PTSD symptoms, others have indicated that reexperiencing or hyperarousal symptoms drive symptom trajectories.
