Sex-specific predictors of criminal recidivism in a representative sample of incarcerated youth.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to identify sex-specific psychopathologic predictors of criminal recidivism among a representative sample of incarcerated youths. METHOD: In this prospective longitudinal study, the Mini-International Psychiatric Interview for children and adolescents was used to assess psychopathology in juveniles entering an Austrian pretrial detention facility between March 2003 and January 2005. From the beginning of the study until January 2006, data on criminal history were obtained from the Integrierte Vollzugsverwaltung, a database containing criminal informat

The effect of a jail methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) program on inmate recidivism.

AIMS: To evaluate the effects of a jail-based continuation of methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) on subsequent inmate recidivism risks. DESIGN: Prospective, longitudinal, observational study. SETTING: A large, Southwestern United States jail that continues MMT for heroin-addicted inmates on MMT at the time of booking. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 589 inmates booked between 22 November 2005 (the start date for the MMT program) and 31 October 2006. MEASUREMENTS: The outcome measure was time from release to subsequent re-booking in the jail. Predictors included binary dosing with methadone in th

Mental illness as an independent risk factor for unintentional injury and injury recidivism.

BACKGROUND: Twelve percent of Americans are diagnosed and treated for mental illness annually. The relationship between mental illness and intentional injuries such as assault and suicide has previously been described. However, unintentional injury among mentally ill adults has not been characterized. The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between mental illness diagnosis and unintentional injury. We hypothesized that diagnosed mental illness is an independent risk factor for unintentional injury and it increases the risk of recidivism. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort s

The effectiveness of sexual offender treatment for juveniles as measured by recidivism: a meta-analysis.

Published and unpublished data from nine studies on juvenile sexual offender treatment effectiveness were summarized by meta-analysis (N=2986, 2604 known male). Recidivism rates for sexual, non-sexual violent, non-sexual non-violent crimes, and unspecified non-sexual were as follows: 12.53%, 24.73%, 28.51%, and 20.40%, respectively, based on an average 59-month follow-up period. Four included studies contained a control group (n=2288) and five studies included a comparison treatment group (n=698). An average weighted effect size of 0.43 (CI=0.33-0.55) was obtained, indicating a statistically s

Female criminality and the prediction of recidivism. A prospective six-year follow-up.

A prospective, six-year follow-up investigation of 66 convicted female felons indicated that psychiatric, social, and familial factors defined and measured at the time of the index study affected the rate of criminal recidivism. Wide individual variation in the course of female criminality was observed. Prolonged supervision on parole or probation appeared to have therapeutic benefit. The most powerful predictors of recidivism were the diagnoses of drug dependence and antisocial personality, and a history of homosexuality. Familial criminality and maternal hysteria were also associated with an

Sexual Recidivism Norms by CPORT Score: Developing Absolute and Relative Rate Estimates.

The present study provides normative data for the Child Pornography Offender Risk Tool (CPORT) by aggregating individual-level data from six routine samples (N = 956) across Canada, Europe, and the United Kingdom. All cases were men adjudicated for child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM) offenses. Meta-analyses revealed stable predictive accuracy for the CPORT across studies (AUCs = .728 and .713, respectively, for any sexual recidivism and for CSAEM-specific recidivism). Estimated recidivism rates increased with CPORT scores, ranging from 3% to 41% for any sexual reoffending and

Trauma Recidivism Following Implementation of a Hospital-Linked Community-Based Violence Program.

INTRODUCTION: Aim4Peace (A4P) is a hospital-linked community-based violence prevention program that aims to reduce violent crime. Trauma recidivism was studied before and after program implementation at an urban trauma center. METHODS: A4P was implemented in 2008. Patients with penetrating injuries from intentional violence were retrospectively identified at an urban Level 1 trauma center. Preintervention patient records from 2006 to 2007 were reviewed, along with postintervention records from 2016 to 2017 and 2021 to 2023. Three-year and 8-y recidivism was compared in the preintervention and

[Recidivism of Discharged Forensic Patient (§ 63 StGB) Differentiated According to Diagnosis Groups].

The aim of the study is the descriptive evaluation of the recidivism trajectories of 321 discharged patients sentenced to forensic treatment acc. to art 63 of the German penal code. The data were taken from the Essen prospective long-term study. Reoffending was aggregated in periods of three years. In the course of the average 16.5-year follow-up period ("time-at-risk"), about one third reoffended (35.2 %). Differentiated by main diagnoses, discharged patients with personality disorders in particular had high overall recidivism rates (57.8 %). For patients discharged for reasons of proportiona

Recidivism and mortality after in-jail buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine is an effective medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) when offered in community-based settings, but evidence is limited for incarcerated populations, particularly in relation to recidivism. In Massachusetts, Franklin County jail (FCSO) was among the first to provide buprenorphine; adjacent Hampshire County jail (HCHC) offered it more recently. These jails present a natural experiment to determine whether outcomes are different between individuals who did and did not have the opportunity to receive buprenorphine in jail. METHODS: We examined outcomes of all incarc

Long Term Recidivism Rates Among Individuals at High Risk to Sexually Reoffend.

Preventive detention provisions in the US and Canada assume we can identify, in advance, individuals at high risk for sexual recidivism. To test this assumption, 377 adult males with a history of sexual offending were followed for 20 years using Canadian national criminal history records and Internet searches. Using previously collected information, a high risk/high need (HRHN) subgroup was identified based on an unusually high levels of criminogenic needs (n = 190, average age of 38 years; 83% White, 13% Indigenous, 4% other). A well above average subgroup of 99 individuals was then identifie

A scalable empathic supervision intervention to mitigate recidivism from probation and parole.

Incarceration is a pervasive issue in the United States that is enormously costly to families, communities, and society at large. The path from prison back to prison may depend on the relationship a person has with their probation or parole officer (PPO). If the relationship lacks appropriate care and trust, violations and recidivism (return to jail or prison) may be more likely to occur. Here, we test whether an "empathic supervision" intervention with PPOs-that aims to reduce collective blame against and promote empathy for the perspectives of adults on probation or parole (APPs)-can reduce

Persons With Severe Mental Illnesses and Sex Offenses: Recidivism After Prison Release.

Individuals who have committed sex offenses (ISOs) with severe mental illnesses are a complex population to serve and more research is needed to guide practice and policy, especially around community supervision, enrollment in Medicaid, housing, employment, criminal justice contacts, and reincarceration after prison reentry. To further the literature in this area, we used logistic regression to model recidivism and admissions to violator or prison facilities among 127 ISOs with severe mental illnesses and 2,935 people with severe mental illnesses who were incarcerated in prison for other crime

Estimating factors of individual and regional characteristics affecting the drink driving recidivism.

Traffic violations, particularly drink driving, are a menace to the drivers themselves, and to other road users. Drink driving crashes often cause death or serious injury to the driver. Understanding the recidivism effect factor of drink driving is essential for designing effective countermeasures. This study is based on register-based data from the National Police Agency, Ministry of the Interior of Taiwan and monthly administrative area information from 2012 to 2015 for the entire population. Hence, this study not only focuses on the effect factor and violation differences between recidivist

The Relationships Between Victim Age, Gender, and Relationship Polymorphism and Sexual Recidivism.

Victim choice polymorphism refers to victim inconsistency in a series of offenses by the same perpetrator, such as in the domains of victim age, victim gender, and victim-offender relationship. Past studies have found that victim age polymorphic offenders have higher rates of sexual recidivism than offenders against adults only and offenders against children only. Few studies, however, have examined gender and relationship polymorphism, or accounted for the impact of the number of past victims. The present study analyzed the relationship between polymorphism and sexual recidivism, while contro

The self-regulation model of sexual offending: intermediate outcomes and posttreatment recidivism.

The self-regulation model (SRM) is a nine-phase, four-pathway offense process model designed specifically for sexual offenders that is now being applied to the treatment of this group in many settings and jurisdictions. In the present prospective study, we evaluated the validity and utility of the SRM in a sample of 275 adult male sexual offenders treated within the Correctional Service of Canada. Results indicated that participation in treatment resulted in moderate to large sized improvements from pretreatment to posttreatment on a dynamic risk assessment measure and several self-reported tr

Prediction of recidivism in extrafamilial child molesters based on court-related assessments.

One hundred ninety-two convicted extrafamilial child molesters were followed for an average of 7.8 years after their conviction. The percentage of men who had committed a sexual, a violent, or any criminal offense by the 12th year was 15.1, 20.3, and 41.6, respectively. The sexual recidivists, compared with the nonrecidivists; demonstrated more problems with alcohol and showed greater sexual arousal to assaultive stimuli involving children than to mutually consenting stimuli with children. The violent recidivists, compared with the nonrecidivists, were more likely to have a history of violence

Psychometric and biographical correlates of drunk-driving recidivism and treatment program compliance.

The primary objective of this study was to assess the extent to which drunk-driving (DUI) recidivism and DUI treatment program compliance could be predicted from psychometric, biographical, drinking history and prior-driving-record variables. These analyses were performed on data from 7,316 DUI offenders initially collected in Sacramento County, California, from September 1977 through January 1981. For most analyses, the recidivism measure was a composite of major convictions (DUI, reckless, hit-and-run), nighttime (6 PM-6 AM) and alcohol-related accidents during the 4-year interval following

Explaining the Unexplainable: Balancing Responsibility, Expectations, and Identity in Narratives of Sexual Recidivism.

When someone is caught and punished for a sexual offense, recidivism prevention is of high priority. While a growing body of qualitative research has investigated the desistance process of those who have sexually offended, few studies have examined the narratives of individuals who have sexually recidivated in order to understand how they make sense of their reoffending. This study aims to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the recidivism process and broader life stories of 16 imprisoned men through semi-structured interviews. The results demonstrate how these men explain their recen
