Modelling the risk factors for accidents in recreational divers: results from a cross-sectional evaluation in Belgium.

INTRODUCTION: Characterisation of the recreational diving community could help to identify scuba divers at risk for accidents. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional evaluation in a federation for recreational scuba divers in Belgium (Duiken.Vlaanderen). Using binary logistic regression, factors predictive for accidents leading to hospitalisation were identified. RESULTS: Of the 710 members, 210 (29.6%) participated in the survey, representing 140,133 dives. Age was > 50 years in 55% and the median (interquartile range [IQR]) number of dives was 380 (IQR 140-935). Cardiac (9.5%), orthopaedi

Internet-based interventions for youth dealing with gambling problems.

A substantial proportion of adolescents and young adults gamble and rates of problem gambling amongst youth are significantly higher than found in adult populations. Despite this, few youth seek treatment suggesting that traditional services are failing to help this vulnerable population. Youth are progressively active online and use the Internet for social networking, recreation, and increasingly, to seek help for health and mental health issues where they would not be comfortable seeking traditional forms of professional help. In recognition of this, Internet-based therapy and guided interve

Replicating motivational and cognitive-motivational typologies of doping attitudes among recreational fitness athletes: implications for harm reduction and risk communication.

BACKGROUND: The non-medical use of image- and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) in recreational fitness represents an important public health and harm-reduction challenge. While prevalence estimates provide useful benchmarks, they often obscure the motivational and cognitive-motivational heterogeneity underlying substance-use decisions and prevention needs in gym populations. OBJECTIVE: This study re-examined a previously published typology and evaluated its reproducibility of doping attitudes and prevention needs among German recreational fitness athletes using selected constructs from the

Understanding kidney morphogenesis to guide renal tissue regeneration.

The treatment of renal failure has seen little change in the past 70 years. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are treated with renal replacement therapy, including dialysis or organ transplantation. The growing imbalance between the availability of donor organs and prevalence of ESRD is pushing an increasing number of patients to undergo dialysis. Although the prospect of new treatment options for patients through regenerative medicine has long been suggested, advances in the generation of human kidney cell types through the directed differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells o

Improving Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Therapy: Community Perspectives from Individuals Who Use Recreationally and for Mental Health Purposes.

There is still inconsistency in psychedelic research across the United States. There are gaps in our understanding of the psychedelic community's perception of topics including reasons for use and set/setting. The goal is to utilize these findings to produce better quantitative research, to ask the right questions of the right communities. This qualitative study organized focus groups from people who use psychedelics for: 1) recreational/spiritual and 2) mental health reasons. We conducted 10 focus groups with 29 people. The data were analyzed using Grounded Theory. A primary coder (JJ) induct

Inappropriate use of foreign materials in temporomandibular joint ankylosis surgery: report of two cases.

Gap and interpositional arthroplasties are the most commonly used methods in the treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis. Complete resection of ankylotic segments, fibrotic band release and creating gap between the condyle and the glenoid fossa have great importance. Two patients were admitted to our clinic with complaints of difficulty in opening mouth and joint pain. In physical examination, maximum mouth opening values were recorded as 7 mm in one patient and 9 mm in another. An operation was planned due the presence of radiological grade 4 bilateral bony ankylosis. During the operat

Changes in older adults' impairment, activity, participation and wellbeing as measured by the AusTOMs following participation in a Transition Care Program.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining a continuum of care is vital to ensure adequate health among older adults, particularly during periods of care transitions, when they are vulnerable and at risk of poor health outcomes. The Transition Care Program in Australia is designed to support older adults following the conclusion of a hospital episode. Using the Australian Therapy Outcome Measures for Occupational Therapy (AusTOMs-OT), this study aimed to understand how the Transition Care Program impacts an older adult's occupational performance during care transitions. METHODS: Data were collected as a part

Impact of Kellgren-Lawrence grade on clinical outcomes following adipose-derived stem cell therapy for knee osteoarthritis: A propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) causes pain and disability, and autologous adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) therapy has emerged as a regenerative treatment option. This retrospective cohort study compared short-term outcomes of intra-articular ASC injections between patients with moderate (Kellgren-Lawrence [KL] 2/3) and severe (KL 4) OA. Among 242 treated patients, 98 in each group were analyzed after propensity score matching for age, sex, and body mass index. Pain (VAS) and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) subscales were evaluated at baseline and 1, 3, and 6 months. Both groups s

Challenges in Autologous Breast Reconstruction: A Review of Recommendations.

Breast reconstruction is an integral part of breast cancer treatment and offers significant psychosocial benefits for patients undergoing mastectomy as a part of their treatment plan. Autologous breast reconstruction (ABR) utilizes a patient's own tissue to reconstruct the mastectomy defect, obviating the need for the implantation of a foreign object. As the field of plastic surgery progresses, ABR has become an excellent option for the recreation of a native breast mount. With that said, there are patient populations who present unique challenges when optimizing an aesthetic ABR result. We ai

Periodontal regeneration in gingival recession defects.

Surgical treatment of gingival recession defects aims at obtaining soft tissue coverage of exposed root surfaces and/or augmentation of gingival tissue dimensions. A variety of protocols have been developed to manage these clinical problems. Since one goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of the lost attachment apparatus of the tooth, full restoration of defect should be accomplished following mucogingival procedures. This implies regeneration of all periodontal structures, including formation of new cementum with inserting connective tissue fibers, alveolar bone regeneration and rec

[Oxygen-conserving delivery system].

Three methods for improving oxygen delivery efficiency--transtracheal oxygen therapy (TTO), reservoir cannula, and demand-pulse oxygen delivery--are currently available. We discuss our experiences of TTO and its characteristics compared with the other two methods. Since 1988, we have tried to apply TTO to the candidates for home oxygen therapy (HOT) fulfilling the following criteria: 1) good activity and enthusiasm to daily life, 2) high oxygen flow rate with nasal cannula, 3) complicating nasal disorders such as chronic sinusitis, or 4) suffering complications from nasal cannula therapy. Overuse injuries of the lower extremity.

Overuse injuries are a common and important cause of morbidity in elite and recreational athletes. They are increasingly recognized in the sedentary population. This article reviews the major classes of overuse injuries of the lower extremity. The underlying pathologic condition is correlated with the imaging appearances, and the often variable relationship between the imaging appearances and patients' symptoms are reviewed. Attempts at imaged-based grading systems and the ability of imaging to predict patients' prognosis are considered. Image-guided injection therapy for tendinopathy is an im

Having served as Associate Editor of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors (PAB) with three distinguished editors, Dr. Nancy Petry, Dr. Stephen Maisto, and Dr. Howard Shaffer, the author learned from the very best how to work with authors and reviewers to publish cutting-edge papers that will have a strong and sustained impact on the field. The author is grateful for their mentoring and the opportunity to apply what she has learned as Interim Editor of PAB, albeit under the untimely circumstances of Dr. Petry's death from cancer in July 2018. The author is to continue Dr. Petry's vision of PAB as

Millepora species (Fire Coral) Sting: A Case Report and Review of Recommended Management.

Fire corals (Millepora spp) are the second most common reef-forming organisms and are frequently found in tropical and subtropical waters. Fire corals are not true corals but rather hydrozoans more closely related to jellyfish and sea nettles. Rigidly affixed to the reef and with a branching structure, each fire coral is a colony of numerous individual hydrozoans forming a collective symbiotic organism. It is common for divers to accidentally make contact with fire corals. Fire coral contact is characterized by the immediate onset of burning pain caused by venom discharge from numerous tiny ne

Psychiatric syndromes in pediatric oncology patients.

While all these problems have been seen in pediatric cancer patients, and some may occur more frequently than in the general population, it is worth reemphasizing that the majority of patients and families are psychiatrically intact. They are generally highly resilient and resourceful in coping with this potentially devastating illness. A vigorous program of support groups, recreational therapy, and academics can enhance the patients' and families' ability to function. For those few who develop psychiatric disorders, effective therapeutic intervention is very important in their recovery from b

Lysergic acid amide-induced posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome with status epilepticus.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is known to occur in association with several substances. However, lysergic acid amide (LSA) is not among the previously reported causes of PRES. METHODS: We report on a patient with PRES presenting as convulsive status epilepticus associated with hypertensive encephalopathy after LSA ingestion. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed and catecholamine metabolites assayed. RESULTS: The patient achieved a full recovery after aggressive antihypertensive therapy and intravenous anticonvulsivant therapy. The clinical history, blo

[Anticonvulsive Therapy after the First Unprovoked Seizure – Pros and Cons].

A first seizure is a critical life time event with severe consequences. A very thorough work-up is needed to find out the cause of the seizure and to number the risk of recurrence. Reasons for an anticonvulsive therapy are a pathologic EEG, a pathologic neurologic examination, the proof of a structural lesion, focal seizure onset or seizure onset while sleeping or classification as an epilepsy syndrome with high recurrence risk like juvenile myoclonic epilepsy or juvenile absence epilepsy. Psychological and social aspects like the patients or relatives fear of a further seizure, the risk of in

Novel approaches to obesity prevention: effects of game enjoyment and game type on energy expenditure in active video games.

BACKGROUND: Some active video games have been found to promote physical activity adherence because of enjoyment. However, many active games are exercise themed, which may interfere with the distracting properties that make game-based exercise more enjoyable than traditional exercise. This study compared exercise-themed and game-themed active games to investigate differences in energy expenditure and enjoyment. METHOD: Young adults (N = 100, 50 female, 55 overweight, aged 18-35 years) played two of four Wii Fit games (one aerobic game and one balance game per person) for 10 min each. Of the tw
