Neural drive to the diaphragm muscle (DIAm) for breathing is generated in the medulla and descends primarily ipsilaterally to phrenic motor neurons (PhMNs) in the cervical spinal cord. Neuromotor control of the DIAm during breathing involves motor unit (MU) recruitment, sustained activity, and derecruitment, which may be differentially altered on ipsilateral and contralateral sides after C2 spinal hemisection (C2SH). In awake rats, bilateral DIAm electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded via chronically implanted electrodes during eupnea in nine Sprague-Dawley rats before and 14 days (day

Sex-related differences have been documented for intrinsic motoneuron excitability and firing rates in young adults, with females exhibiting higher excitability than males; however, it is unknown whether these parameters are affected by sex earlier in development. We compared the sex-related differences in firing behavior of single tibialis anterior (TA) motor units decomposed from high-density surface electromyography (EMG) in young (7-17 yr) and older (18-28 yr) developmental males and females during triangular dorsiflexion contractions at 10, 20, and 30% of their maximal voluntary contracti

Like all skeletal muscles, the diaphragm muscle accomplishes a range of motor behaviors by recruiting different motor unit types in an orderly fashion. Recruitment of phrenic motor neurons (PhMNs) is generally assumed to be based primarily on the intrinsic properties of PhMNs with an equal distribution of descending excitatory inputs to all PhMNs. However, differences in presynaptic excitatory input across PhMNs of varying sizes could also contribute to the orderly recruitment pattern. In the spinal cord of Sprague-Dawley rats, we retrogradely labeled PhMNs using cholera toxin B (CTB) and vali

OBJECTIVE: Modern prosthetic limbs have made strident gains in recent years, incorporating terminal electromechanical devices that are capable of mimicking the human hand. However, access to these advanced control capabilities has been prevented by fundamental limitations of amplitude-based myoelectric neural interfaces, which have remained virtually unchanged for over four decades. Consequently, nearly 23% of adults and 32% of children with major traumatic or congenital upper-limb loss abandon regular use of their myoelectric prosthesis. To address this healthcare need, we have developed a no

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of averaging multiple MUNIX trials on the follow-up of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
METHODS: We determined the percent relative change (%RC) of MUNIX, in healthy subjects and patients with ALS, by subtracting the MUNIX value in the second visit from the first. Both the mean of a set of three MUNIX (mean-MUNIX) and the first MUNIX sample (single-MUNIX) were evaluated. Then, we studied the sensitivity to detect relative changes over time and the statistical dispersion of the %RC from these two parameters.
RESULTS: We found that the mean-MUN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of chronic cervical spinal cord compression upon remote motor unit function in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).
METHODS: Fifty-three CSM patients and 47 healthy subjects were included. Bilateral motor unit number estimations (MUNEs) were recorded from both abductor digiti minimi and abductor pollicis brevis, and bilateral flexor carpi radialis (FCR) H-reflexes were examined in all subjects along with the nine-hole peg test (NHPT). The main outcome measures included the number of motor units, the average single motor unit potential (SMUP) are

Spasticity in chronic hemiparetic stroke patients has primarily been treated pharmacologically. However, there is increasing evidence that physical rehabilitation can help manage hyper-excitability of reflexes (hyperreflexia), which is a primary contributor to spasticity. In the present study, one chronic hemiparetic stroke patient operantly conditioned the soleus H-reflex while training on a balance board for two weeks. The results showed a minimal decrease in the Hmax-Mmax ratio for both the affected and unaffected limb, indicating that the H-reflex was not significantly altered with trainin

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ageing on the rate of force generation of motor units, and the mechanical efficiency of contraction produced by a doublet discharge. The study was carried out on isolated motor units of rat medial gastrocnemius muscle of young (5-10 mo) and two groups of old (24-25 and 28-30 mo) Wistar rats. Motor units were classified into the fast fatigable (FF), fast resistant (FR) and slow (S) ones. The force output and rate of force development were determined for non-doublet unfused tetanic contractions evoked by a series of a constant-rate trains

A 21-year-old man was left with complete paraplegia and lower extremity sensory loss after a gunshot wound to the 4th lumbar vertebral body. Within three weeks of the injury he noted slight recovery of proximal left leg movements. With further motor recovery and rehabilitation, he was discharged ambulatory at nine months postinjury. The patient described late motor recovery developing 13 to 16 years after injury, particularly in right knee extensors and bilateral ankle plantar flexors, simultaneous with an aggressive home exercise program. Serial manual muscle tests revealed increased strength

A person with sensorineural hearing loss accompanied by recruitment has difficulty in understanding amplified speech, especially when speech is in the presence o competition. Two groups of subjects with sensorineural hearing loss with recruitment were tested at +6 and at O dB signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio at preferred levels for unprocessed speech and for speech processed through a two-band compression/equalization of circuit. In addition, unprocessed key word identification scores were compared to those from use of a hearing aid and of a one-band compression/equalization circuit. Processing a t

This study was carried out to examine recruitment of loudness measured by the classical and the modified, self-recording alternate binaural loudness balance tests in 20 normal subjects and in 14 patients with various kinds of ear pathology. In spite of individual variability, the modified method, when used as described in this study, does provide an indication of the presence or absence of loudness recruitment.

This is an electromyographic study of the activity in flexor and extensor muscles of the big toe in 22 patients with a Babinski sign and 49 controls, after mechanical or electrical stimulation of the sole. The results indicate: (1) the Babinski sign is mediated by the extensor hallucis longus (EHL), and not by the extensor hallucis brevis; (2) electrical stimuli may fail to activate the EHL in these patients, and conversely may evoke EHL reflexes in control subjects; (3) in skin reflexes, electrical and mechanical stimuli are not freely interchangeable.

Solving the EMG probability density function inverse problem is a novel approach to extract motor unit information from single-channel EMG recordings. The method operates on EMG signals recorded during an isometric ramp contraction covering the entire muscle force range. The EMG is segmented into small portions, and each segment is characterized using the first two non-central sample moments. An iterative approach is employed to successively identify newly recruited motor units in each segment. At each step, an optimization algorithm estimates the set of motor unit potential (MUP) amplitudes t

OBJECTIVE: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterised by progressive degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons and their motor units (MUs). MU loss is compensated by collateral sprouting and reinnervation of muscle fibres. There is limited information about the properties of these surviving MUs as these processes take place. High-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) decomposition enables non-invasive analysis of individual MU firing behaviour during maximal voluntary contractions and assess their changes with ALS progression.
METHODS: Thirty-nine individuals with ALS (24 m

BACKGROUND: Individuals who have experienced spinal cord injury (SCI) may exhibit various muscle-related neurophysiological adaptations, including alterations in motor unit (MU) size and firing behavior. However, due to the technical challenges of in vivo measurement, our understanding of the alterations in the electrophysiological parameters of these MUs remains limited. This study proposed an integrated approach using high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) decomposition and motor neuron (MN) modelling to estimate the intrinsic properties of MUs in vivo and investigated alterations of these p

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Cycling is a repetitive activity using coordinated muscle recruitment patterns to apply force to the pedals. With more muscles available for activation than required, some patterns produce high power, whereas some are more efficient. The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between muscle coordination and factors affecting muscle coordination to explain changes in overall mechanical efficiency (ηO).
METHODS: Surface EMG, kinematics, and pedal forces were measured at 25%, 40%, 55%, 60%, 75%, and 90% V˙O(2max). Principal component analysis was used to establ

Several shoulder dysfunctions are generally characterized as Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (SIS). Specifically, glenohumeral instability (GI) has been viewed as a primary cause of SIS in young individuals, mainly in overhead athletics. Past studies have associated GI with modifications in latency, recruitment order and/or EMG activity. However, it is not clear if pain and/or joint instability can account for these observed changes. The aim of this investigation was to analyze the effect of glenohumeral instability on the latencies and recruitment order of the superficial muscles of the glenohu

Twenty-six-day-old male zebra finches received (1) unilateral section of their tracheosyringeal nerve, (2) bilateral lesions of the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (LMAN), and (3) both operations. All birds were kept with an adult, singing male as a tutor until day 65. Tracheo-syringeal nerve-cut birds were able to imitate this model, but LMAN-lesioned birds were not. Bromodeoxyuridine, a marker of cell division, was injected intramuscularly during post-hatching days 61-65 and all birds were killed at 91 days of age. The number of bromodeoxyuridine+ neurons in the hig

We studied the discharge rates and recruitment characteristics of single motor units in paretic and contralateral arm muscles of 6 hemiparetic subjects. Motor unit activity in biceps brachii was recorded at different elbow torques, and the activity related both to the mean level of surface electromyographic activity, and to the degree of weakness. In 3 of the 6 subjects, there were significant reductions in mean discharge rate of motor units in the paretic muscle. All 6 subjects showed compression of the range of motoneuron recruitment forces, and a failure to increase motor unit discharge rat

Surface electromyographic "EMG" activity in biceps brachii (agonist muscle) and triceps brachii (antagonist muscle) as well as the discharge behaviour of motor units "MUs" (needle recording) in biceps brachii muscle were recorded during slow (0.33 Hz) and fast (0.66 Hz) voluntary elbow flexion movements (auditory matching task) in fifty patients with spastic hemiplegia. In the spastic limbs, a long lasting, small amplitude tonic co-contraction of antagonist muscles was seen during slow flexions (SF) in 29 cases. This effect was strongest during the fast elbow flexion movements (FF). In 33 pati
