Distribution and natural infection status of synantrophic triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, reveals new epidemiological scenarios for chagas disease in the Highlands of Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Updating the distribution and natural infection status of triatomine bugs is critical for planning, prioritizing, and implementing strategies to control Chagas disease (CD), especially after vector reduction programs. After carrying out a control program, the Department of Boyaca contains the highest number of Colombian municipalities certified by PAHO to be free of intradomiciliary transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi by Rhodnius prolixus. The present work describes the spatial distribution, natural infection (NI), and molecular characterization of T. cruzi in synanthropic triatomi

Long-term efficacy of fluralaner (Exzolt®) in Gallus gallus domesticus against epidemiologically relevant triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae): a potential complementary strategy for Chagas disease control.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease control relies primarily on vector control using pyrethroid insecticide sprays with residual action in domestic and peridomestic environments. However, the necessity for repeated applications and the development of pyrethroid resistance in some countries have undermined this strategy. Alternative control tools are needed, and host-targeted systemic insecticides offer an alternative approach by creating toxic blood meals for hematophagous vectors. In peridomestic settings, chickens are major blood meal sources for triatomines. This study evaluated the insecticidal act

First record of Triatoma vitticeps (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) colonising a brick house in an urban area of a devastated Atlantic Forest fragment in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Triatoma vitticeps (Stål, 1859), a primarily sylvatic vector of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909), has been reported invading dwellings and peridomiciliary ecotopes in several regions of Brazil. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Here, we report for the first time, the colonisation of a brick house by T. vitticeps in the municipality of São José do Vale do Rio Preto, Rio de Janeiro State. FINDINGS: Inside the house, indicators of colonisation were recorded, including 15 eggs, 11 nymphs, two exuviae, and 19 adult specimens. T. cruzi infection was detected in 13 specimens and the blood meal so

Insects found in birds' nests from Argentina. Pseudoseisura lophotes Reichenbach, 1853 and Anumbius annumbi (Vieillot, 1817) (Aves: Furnariidae), hosts of Triatoma platensis Neiva, 1913 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

The insect fauna of the nests of Pseudoseisura lophotes (Reichenbach, 1853) (Aves: Furnariidae) from Argentina was investigated. A total of 110 species (68 identified to species, 22 identified to genus, 20 identified to family) in 40 families of 10 orders of insects was found in these nests. Triatoma platensis Neiva, 1913 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) was found again in nests of P. lophotes, corroborating after 73 years the first observations made by Mazza in 1936. The occurrence of the insects in nests of P. lophotes is compared with the previously known insect fauna in nests of A. annumbi, Furnari

The process of lipid storage in insect oocytes: The involvement of β-chain of ATP synthase in lipophorin-mediated lipid transfer in the chagas' disease vector Panstrongylus megistus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Lipophorin is the main lipoprotein in the hemolymph of insects. During vitellogenesis, lipophorin delivers its hydrophobic cargo to developing oocytes by its binding to non-endocytic receptors at the plasma membrane of the cells. In some species however, lipophorin may also be internalized to some extent, thus maximizing the storage of lipid resources in growing oocytes. The ectopic β chain of ATP synthase (β-ATPase) was recently described as a putative non-endocytic lipophorin receptor in the anterior midgut of the hematophagous insect Panstrongylus megistus. In the present work, females of t

Effect of patch size on the occupancy and spatial co-occurrence patterns of Trypanosoma cruzi (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae), Didelphis virginiana (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae), and Triatoma dimidiata (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in human-modified environments.

Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas, a parasite with a life cycle involving hematophagous triatomines and vertebrate mammals as hosts. The parasite's metapopulation is nested within its biological habitat patches, or hosts. In anthropogenic landscapes, the hierarchical arrangement of territorial units (locality, block, property) complicates the identification of an appropriate geographic patch size to assess parasite and host persistence. In this study, we evaluated local spatial co-occurrence patterns among Triatoma dimidiata (sensu lato) (Latreille), Didelphis virginiana All

Infection susceptibility and vector competence of Rhodnius robustus Larrousse, 1927 and R. pictipes Stal, 1872 (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae) for strains of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909) (Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae) I, II and IV.

BACKGROUND: Rhodnius robustus and Rhodnius pictipes are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease (CD), that are found in the Brazilian Amazon region. Susceptibility to infection and vector competence depend on the parasite-vector relationship. Our objective was to evaluate the interaction between T. cruzi and these two triatomine vectors in pure and mixed experimental infections of T. cruzi strains from the same or different geographic regions. METHODS: Fifth-instar nymphs of R. robustus and R. pictipes were fed on mice infected with four T. cruzi strains, namely ge

Harvesting Venom Toxins from Assassin Bugs and Other Heteropteran Insects.

Heteropteran insects such as assassin bugs (Reduviidae) and giant water bugs (Belostomatidae) descended from a common predaceous and venomous ancestor, and the majority of extant heteropterans retain this trophic strategy. Some heteropterans have transitioned to feeding on vertebrate blood (such as the kissing bugs, Triatominae; and bed bugs, Cimicidae) while others have reverted to feeding on plants (most Pentatomomorpha). However, with the exception of saliva used by kissing bugs to facilitate blood-feeding, little is known about heteropteran venoms compared to the venoms of spiders, scorpio

Acute Chagas Disease Presenting as Preseptal Cellulitis.

Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasite transmitted by hematophagous triatomine insects (subfamily Triatominae) belonging to the Reduviidae family, order Hemiptera. Infection occurs through contact with the feces of the infected vector at the site of its bite or on intact mucosa. [Pediatr Ann. 2023;52(10):e394-e397.].

Gross morphology and histology of head and salivary apparatus of the predatory bug, Rhynocoris marginatus.

Rhynocoris marginatus Fabricius (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is an important biological control agent against more than 25 insect pests in India. For a better understanding of the feeding adaptation of this bug, the gross morphology and histology of its head and salivary apparatus were studied using both a light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The head is more or less elongate, mobile, and immersed into the eyes. R. marginatus has a three-segmented curved rostrum; the middle segment is longer than the other two segments. The terminal rostral segment bears spines and trichobothria exter

Assassin bugs enhance prey capture with a sticky resin.

Tool-use in animals is a complex and rare phenomenon, particularly in insects. Tool-use in assassin bugs has been suggested as several species apply adhesive plant resins to their body, which has been hypothesized to function in enhancing prey capture. Here, we staged predatory interactions of resin-deprived and resin-equipped assassin bugs (Gorareduvius sp.) and discovered that applying resin as a tool conveys a clear predatory advantage to the assassin bugs. Gorareduvius sp. can thus be considered a tool-user, and since this behaviour was present in all individuals, including newly hatched n

Kissing bugs (Triatoma) and the skin.

Kissing bugs (Family Reduviidae) can be the source of nocturnal dermatologic wounds in the mid to southern latitudes in the United States. The insects are obligate blood feeders and though the bites may be asymptomatic, a variety of dermatologic eruptions or death from anaphylaxis can result. The various dermatologic forms of the bite can be mistaken for herpes zoster, erythema multiforme and the ubiquitous catch-all diagnoses of "spider-bite."

Sylvatic focus of Chagas' disease in Oaxaca, Mexico.

During three field trips to the community of 'La Humedad', municipality of Santiago Jamiltepec, Oaxaca (a State in the southern part of the Mexican Republic), live specimens of Triatoma mazzottii Usinger (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) were found infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. The insects were captured in only one of the dwellings inspected in the locality, and in four small caves where bats and other mammals live. These findings suggest the need for further studies on the existence of a sylvatic cycle of Chagas' disease in Mexico, which has not yet been established.

Unusual case of choking due to assassin bug ( Cydnocoris gilvus).

Choking is a form of asphyxia which is caused by an obstruction within the air passages. Here, we report a case of obstruction of the upper respiratory tract due to assassin bug ( Cydnocoris gilvus) where allegations of medical negligence were made by relatives of the deceased. Autopsy findings demonstrated that an insect was present inside the larynx, lodged at the epiglottis. Multiple haemorrhagic patches were present at the base of the tongue, larynx, epiglottis, vocal cords and tracheal bifurcation. As Reduviidae can be successfully used as a biological pest-control agents, they should be

Protocol for in vivo tracking of lipoproteins in developing oocytes of multiple species of Chagas disease vectors using fluorescent probes.

In insects, the circulating lipoproteins vitellogenin and lipophorin function as yolk protein precursors during oogenesis. Here, we present a protocol for tracing vitellogenin and lipophorin pathways during egg development in three species of Chagas disease vectors (Triatominae, Hemiptera: Reduviidae). We describe steps for purifying and fluorescent labeling of lipoproteins, their injection into vitellogenic females, and analysis using confocal microscopy. This approach enables the fate of lipoprotein particles and their lipid cargo in ovarian tissues to be tracked at the subcellular level. Fo

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Protein: Searching for Insecticidal Toxins in Venom of the Red Tiger Assassin Bug (Havinthus rufovarius).

Assassin bugs are venomous insects that prey on other arthropods. Their venom has lethal, paralytic, and liquifying effects when injected into prey, but the toxins responsible for these effects are unknown. To identify bioactive assassin bug toxins, venom was harvested from the red tiger assassin bug (Havinthus rufovarius), an Australian species whose venom has not previously been characterised. The venom was fractionated using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, and four fractions were found to cause paralysis and death when injected into sheep blowflies (Lucilia cuprina).

Impact of alkaloids in food consumption, metabolism and survival in a blood-sucking insect.

The sense of taste provides information about the "good" or "bad" quality of a food source, which may be potentially nutritious or toxic. Most alkaloids taste bitter to humans, and because bitter taste is synonymous of noxious food, they are generally rejected. This response may be due to an innate low palatability or due to a malaise that occurs after food ingestion, which could even lead to death. We investigated in the kissing bug Rhodnius prolixus, whether alkaloids such as quinine, caffeine and theophylline, are merely distasteful, or if anti-appetitive responses are caused by a post-inge

Population differentiation of the Chagas disease vector Triatoma maculata (Erichson, 1848) from Colombia and Venezuela.

The emerging vector of Chagas disease, Triatoma maculata (Hemiptera, Reduviidae), is one of the most widely distributed Triatoma species in northern South America. Despite its increasing relevance as a vector, no consistent picture of the magnitude of genetic and phenetic diversity has yet been developed. Here, several populations of T. maculata from eleven Colombia and Venezuela localities were analyzed based on the morphometry of wings and the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (ND4) gene sequences. Our results showed clear morphometric and genetic differences among Colombian and Ven
