We described the case of a young man with morbid obesity who underwent bariatric surgery who experiences different complications. After the discharge the patient starts to complain about nausea, dizziness, and visual impairment. After a first access to an emergency department, with a diagnosis of labyrinthopathy, the patient gets worse. He then has been hospitalized and a wernicke's encephalopathy was diagnosed. During the hospitalization other comploication of low thiamine appeared such as wet beriberi. The clinical picture was also complicated with the refeeding syndrome. Wernicke's encephal

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is characterized by electrolyte and metabolic disturbances that may occur following the initiation of nutritional support. Given the potential for these disturbances to contribute to clinically important complications, there is substantial interest in ensuring timely recognition of RFS and identifying patients at increased risk. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to systematically evaluate the incidence and risk factors of RFS in critically ill patients to support risk stratification and optimize nutritional management.
METHODS: This stu

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the influencing factors and nursing strategies for enteral nutrition patients complicated with refeeding syndrome (RS) in the ICU.
METHODS: A total of 173 enteral nutrition patients in the ICU admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into a control group (without RS, n = 128) and an observation group (with RS, n = 45) based on whether they developed RS. The general data such as gender, age, and body mass index (BMI) of patients were compared. The enteral nutrition-related indexes of two groups such as

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is defined by the presence of acute electrolyte disturbances, including hypophosphatemia. Underlying disease(s), malnutrition and hospitalisation are known risk factors for RFS. It can occur in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to determine the frequency of hypophosphatemia and the relationship between hypophosphatemia, disease severity and nutritional status in hospitalized patients with IBD.
METHODS: This study was performed prospectively in hospitalized adult patients for the treatment of IBD in a tertiary-care hospital.

Medical stabilization, nutrition rehabilitation, and weight restoration, while minimizing risk for the potentially fatal complication of refeeding syndrome, are the primary goals for the treatment of hospitalized individuals with anorexia nervosa and other restrictive-type eating disorders. The purpose of this review was to examine the literature exploring the prophylactic supplementation of phosphate, magnesium, and potassium, in addition to routine thiamin and multivitamin supplementation, for the prevention of refeeding syndrome in adolescents and adults with anorexia nervosa. Through evalu

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The key to preventing refeeding syndrome (RS) is identifying and appropriately managing patients at risk. We evaluated our clinical management of RS risk in patients starting total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
METHODS: Patients commencing TPN at University College London Hospital between January and July 2015 were prospectively followed-up for 7-days. Eighty patients were risk assessed for RS and categorized into risk groups. High and low risk RS groups were compared focussing on the onset of biochemical features of RS (hypophosphatemia, hypokalaemia and hypomagnesemia) and

BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is a life-threatening metabolic derangement occurring when nutrition is reintroduced after prolonged starvation. Limited data exist regarding RFS prevalence, risk factors, and outcome, particularly in critically ill patients.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in a medical intensive care unit from June 2018 to August 2020. RFS diagnostic criteria from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) were used. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Although refeeding syndrome (RFS) has been recognized as a potentially fatal metabolic complication, the definition of RFS has remained unclear. Recently, European researchers suggested an evidence-based and consensus-supported algorithm that consisted of a new RFS risk classification and treatment strategies for medical inpatients. The classification was based on the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) criteria for patients at risk of developing RFS. In this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency of each applied new risk group and the associat

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Early screening and identification of high-risk factors for refeeding syndrome (RFS) and targeted nursing measures are important to ensure the safety of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). This study aimed to develop and validate a reliable and effective nomogram for identifying adults with critical illness at high risk for RFS.
METHODS: This study was conducted in the ICU of a general hospital, enrolling 400 adults with critical illness between July 2023 and March 2024. Predictive factors were selected through univariate analysis and least absolute shrinkag

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a rare, life-threatening condition in which thiamine deficiency causes dysfunction of the Kreb's cycle, accumulation of lactic acid in the brain tissues, and irreversible cognitive impairment. Prompt treatment with IV thiamine can reverse the process. The classic Wernicke's triad of ataxia, memory issues, and ocular abnormalities is not often present. Caine's criteria, which requires two of the following: dietary deficiencies, ocular abnormalities, altered cognition or mental status, and cerebellar dysfunction, is highly sensitive and specific for Wernicke's d

During refeeding syndrome-a well-known and dreaded complication of weight-restauration in anorexia nervosa-a shift of electrolytes and fluid can occur in malnourished patients and might therefore lead to-potentially fatal-cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological symptoms. Causes of this are metabolic and hormonal changes during re-establishment of a carbohydrate-rich diet. This syndrome is most commonly associated with hypophosphatemia, which can however be accompanied by other chemical laboratory abnormalities. Standardized guidelines for the prevention and management of the refeeding syn

BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is conventionally related to initiation of feeding after prolonged semi-starvation. RFS has been observed following acute abdominal surgery and the most frequent manifestations were edema and hypotension. There was no description of weight loss prior to hospitalization and possible adaptation.
HYPOTHESIS: A positive sodium balance is associated with increased incidence of a refeeding-like syndrome (RLS) in hospitalized adults following acute abdominal surgery.
METHOD: This was a prospective cohort study in consecutive patients undergoing acute abdominal s

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a severe form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy that may result in dehydration, malnutrition, and electrolyte imbalance. Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE), caused by thiamine deficiency, and refeeding syndrome (RFS), a metabolic complication of nutritional rehabilitation, are rare but serious sequelae of prolonged starvation in HG. We present the case of a multiparous woman in her 30s with severe HG and missed miscarriage at approximately 16 weeks, who developed refractory hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, and evolving neurological symptoms following medical manageme

BACKGROUND Refeeding syndrome (RFS) and starvation-associated injuries are significant complications in malnourished patients. Severe weight loss after obesity surgery is frequently associated with malnutrition, consequently increasing the likelihood of RFS and starvation-related injuries as postoperative complications. RFS and starvation-induced injury in a single patient has rarely been reported. In this paper, we present, for the first time, a case of hepatic injury attributed to both refeeding syndrome and starvation-induced hepatic injury in a malnourished woman following bariatric surger

BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome is the gravest possible medical complication in malnourished patients undergoing refeeding in the hospital. We previously reported that males with malnutrition secondary to eating disorders required more calories and had longer hospital stays than females; however, sex differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk remain unknown. The objective of this study was to assess differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk among male and female adolescents and young adults with eating disorders hospitalized for

This study was undertaken to determine whether refeeding through the native small intestine or through a small bowel transplant would reverse hepatic steatosis induced by total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and of what influence a coexisting short-gut syndrome is. Three short-gut syndromes of different severity were established in Lewis rats (short-gut I, mild; short-gut II, moderate; short-gut III, severe). TPN was administered for 10 days and the animals were refed for 20 days. A liver biopsy after the TPN period confirmed a mild to moderate fatty infiltration of the liver in all groups. After
