PTSD, depression, and migration-related experiences among Syrian refugees living in camp vs urban settings.

Despite the increased heterogeneity of living conditions of refugees in recent years, there is a lack of robust epidemiological data about the relationship between refugees' mental health and their living contexts. The current study aims to compare frequencies of pre-migration traumatic events and post-migration difficulties between refugees living in camps and those living in cities; and to identify the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and factors associated with them. A field survey was conducted among 1,470 refugees living in camps and urban settings of Turke

Lessons to learn from the analysis of routine health data from Moria Refugee Camp on Lesvos, Greece.

BACKGROUND: Refugees in humanitarian settings commonly experience many health needs and barriers to access healthcare; health data from these settings are infrequently reported, preventing effective healthcare provision. This report describes health needs of refugees in Moria Camp on Lesvos, Greece-Europe's largest refugee camp. METHODS: A set of routinely collected service data of 18 131 consultations of 11 938 patients, attending a primary care clinic in the camp over 6 months in 2019-20, was analysed retrospectively, focusing on chronic health conditions. RESULTS: The most frequent chroni

Knowledge, attitude and practice of hygiene and sanitation in a Burundian refugee camp: implications for control of a Salmonella typhi outbreak.

INTRODUCTION: A Salmonella typhi outbreak was reported in a Burundian refugee camp in Rwanda in October 2015. Transmission persisted despite increased hygiene promotion activities and hand-washing facilities instituted to prevent and control the outbreak. A knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) study was carried out to assess the effectiveness of ongoing typhoid fever preventive interventions. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Mahama Refugee Camp of Kirehe District, Rwanda from January to February 2016. Data were obtained through administration of a structured KAP questionna

Exploring risk factors and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns associated with bacteriuria among Syrian refugees in makeshift camps.

BACKGROUND: The health and well-being of refugees are critically compromised by harsh living conditions, which foster the emergence of infectious diseases and the misuse of antimicrobial agents. This multi-centre, cross-sectional, community-based study investigated the prevalence of urine carriage of bacteria and the associated antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolates among Syrian refugees living in makeshift camps in Lebanon, an East Mediterranean country. METHODS: We used multi-variable logistic regression models to identify the risk factors associated with bacteriuria in this vuln

Evaluation of the implementation of the EWARS Mobile epidemiological surveillance tool in Sudanese refugee camps in Eastern Chad: a retrospective and population-based surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: The escalation of the conflict in Sudan has created a major humanitarian challenge for neighboring countries, especially in the Eastern regions of Chad. This humanitarian setting's health needs are unique in that they are more vulnerable to both outbreak-prone disease and a lack of essential services. To address these challenges, the World Health Organization has supported implementing the Early Warning Alert and Response System (EWARS) Mobile. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of the EWARS Mobile epidemiological surveillance tool in Sudanese children's refu

Menstrual pain self-medication relates to poor mental health outcomes from Al-Zaatri refugees' camp.

Dysmenorrhea, the most common gynecological pain syndrome reported in women, is understudied in refugee communities. In addition, the association between dysmenorrhea self-medication and mental health symptoms in this population is poorly understood. We aimed to examine whether the use of dysmenorrhea analgesic self-medications and other clinical factors are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and insomnia severity in female war refugees residing in Zaatari Camp. This study followed a cross-sectional design and was performed on a cohort of women with pred

"Of course, you get depression in this situation": Explanatory Models (EMs) among Afghan refugees in camps in Northern Greece.

BACKGROUND: Afghan refugees and asylum seekers constitute one of the largest groups that live in camp settings in Greece. While they experience psychological distress, they are facing significant barriers in accessing appropriate mental health care. Explanatory Models (EMs) provide a context-sensitive framework for understanding the differences between health professionals, refugees and NGOs that operate on the field. This study aims at further understanding how Afghan refugees perceive and explain depression and largely psychological distress, and how this influences their choices for coping

Tungiasis: a highly neglected disease among neglected diseases. Case series from Nduta refugee camp (Tanzania).

Tungiasis is a highly prevalent yet neglected disease of populations affected by extreme poverty. It causes great discomfort and pain, leads to social stigmatization and, when left untreated, can cause serious complications. Although natural repellents have been shown to be effective, too little is being done in terms of systematic prevention and treatment. In addition, self-treatment (usually extraction of fleas with non-sterile sharp instruments) comports high risks of infection, notably with viral hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus. In this article, we report seven severe cases of t

Comparing alternative cholera vaccination strategies in Maela refugee camp: using a transmission model in public health practice.

BACKGROUND: Cholera is a major public health concern in displaced-person camps, which often contend with overcrowding and scarcity of resources. Maela, the largest and longest-standing refugee camp in Thailand, located along the Thai-Burmese border, experienced four cholera outbreaks between 2005 and 2010. In 2013, a cholera vaccine campaign was implemented in the camp. To assist in the evaluation of the campaign and planning for subsequent campaigns, we developed a mathematical model of cholera in Maela. METHODS: We formulated a Susceptible-Infectious-Water-Recovered-based transmission model

Post-traumatic stress disorder, psychiatric comorbidities and associated factors among refugees in Nakivale camp in southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict in Africa has led to displacement of over 24.2 million people, more than 1.4 million of whom are living in Uganda. Studies show that refugees living in Ugandan refugee settlements are at increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder. However data on the prevalence of other mental health problems among refugees including depression, anxiety and substance use disorder among refugees in Uganda is lacking. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder, its main psychiatric comorbidities and perceived psychosocial needs among refugees in Na

Evidence-based chlorination targets for household water safety in humanitarian settings: Recommendations from a multi-site study in refugee camps in South Sudan, Jordan, and Rwanda.

The current Sphere guideline for water chlorination in humanitarian emergencies fails to reliably ensure household water safety in refugee camps. We investigated post-distribution chlorine decay and household water safety in refugee camps in South Sudan, Jordan, and Rwanda between 2013-2015 with the goal of demonstrating an approach for generating site-specific and evidence-based chlorination targets that better ensure household water safety than the status quo Sphere guideline. In each of four field studies we conducted, we observed how water quality changed between distribution and point of

'I am my own doctor': Coping, creativity and entering do-it-yourself antibiotic regimes in a refugee camp in Lebanon.

As everyday life in Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon is heavily constrained by structural factors such as poverty, discrimination and limited access to quality healthcare, camp residents find ways to survive - to cope. Through six months of ethnographic fieldwork with participant observation and qualitative interviews in the informal pharmaceutical sector in Shatila, I observed how camp residents use everyday coping tactics to access and use antibiotics; they climb the antibiotic hierarchy, become their own doctors, try different antibiotics through trial and error, and access healthcare and an

Epidemiology of surgery in a protracted humanitarian setting: a 20-year retrospective study of Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, Kigoma, Western Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: There are 80 million forcibly displaced persons worldwide, 26.3 million of whom are refugees. Many refugees live in camps and have complex health needs, including a high burden of non-communicable disease. It is estimated that 3 million procedures are needed for refugees worldwide, yet very few studies exist on surgery in refugee camps, particularly protracted refugee settings. This study utilizes a 20-year dataset, the longest dataset of surgery in a refugee setting to be published to date, to assess surgical output in a setting of protracted displacement. METHODS: A retrospectiv

Impact of Food Rations and Supplements on Micronutrient Status by Trimester of Pregnancy: Cross-Sectional Studies in the Maela Refugee Camp in Thailand.

Micronutrient fortified flour (MFF), supplementary food rations and micronutrient (MN) supplements may prevent deficiencies among pregnant women. Objectives of cross-sectional surveys in 2004 (n = 533) and 2006 (n = 515) were to assess the impact of new food rations (flour, oil) and supplements on MN status by trimester of pregnancy in the Maela refugee camp. Hemoglobin, iron status, zinc, retinol, β-carotene and tryptophan decreased, while α-/γ-tocopherol and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) increased from first to third trimester. In 2006, mean zinc and α-tocopherol for each trimester was s
