Mpox in a Couple Living with HIV: Relapse or Reinfection?

Mpox is caused by a zoonotic orthopoxvirus capable of infecting several animal species, including humans. The analysis of cases in the current outbreak showed that, differently from what happens in the classical disease, mpox has mostly affected men who have sex with men (MSM) and bisexuals, including a high proportion of people living with HIV/AIDS. The role of the immune system in fighting mpox has been discussed in literature and experts believe that immunity conferred by natural infection may be lifelong, advocating against the possibility of reinfection by monkeypox virus. This report pre

Reinfection in patients with COVID-19: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: With the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, some COVID-19 patients have become reinfected with the virus. Viral gene sequencing has found that some of these patients were reinfected by the different and others by same strains. This has raised concerns about the effectiveness of immunity after infection and the reliability of vaccines. To this end, we conducted a systematic review to assess the characteristics of patients with reinfection and possible causes. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across eight databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library,

Decreasing Chlamydial Reinfections in a Female Urban Population.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia is the most reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI). The rates of chlamydia rose by 19% between 2011 and 2018. The STI National Strategic Plan (2021-2025), encourages coordinated solutions to address STIs and reduce disparities in disadvantaged populations. METHODS: We implemented institutional policy changes, clinical decision support, including a Best Practice Advisory, and defaulted SmartSet with provider and patient education for women's health clinics at a large county health system. The advisory prompted providers to follow best practices when treat

Resistance to reinfection in mice as a vaccine model for giardiasis.

Infection with Giardia is the most commonly diagnosed parasitic cause of diarrhea in the developed world, yet no vaccine exists for human use and a commercially available veterinary vaccine is of limited utility. We have used the adult C57BL/6 mouse model of infection with Giardia duodenalis to better understand immunity to secondary infections with this parasite. Mice were primed by infection with either the GS or WB strains of Giardia and treated with metronidazole on day 7-12 to eliminate the primary infections. Challenge infections on day 21 or day 60 after the primary infections resulted

Electrocardiographic characterization in Trypanosoma cruzi reinfected mice.

Chagas' disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, affects approximately 20 million people. There are 3 stages in the disease: acute, intermediate and chronic, the diversity and severity of the symptoms range from a mild electrocardiographic alteration to sudden death. We have previously demonstrated that when reinfections were carried out in the acute phase they produce greater cardiac damage. The aim of the present work was to investigate whether T. cruzi reinfected mice present electrocardiographic abnormalities that could be characteristic and only achieved after reinfections. Of the mice reinf

Development of resistance to reinfection by Clonorchis sinensis in rats.

We investigated the induction of resistance to Clonorchis sinensis infection by prior infection in rat and hamster models. Animals were challenged with C. sinensis metacercariae, then treated with praziquantel and reinfected. Worm recovery rate in reinfected animals was used to estimate resistance to reinfection. The determined resistance rates to reinfection in rats and hamsters were 97.7% and 10.3%, respectively. In rats, cure from the primary infection of C. sinensis increased resistant to reinfection, and the greater the worm burden and the longer the duration of primary infection, the hig

Susceptibility to homologous reinfection with Fasciola gigantica in goats.

Goats previously infected with 100 viable Fasciola gigantica metacercariae and treated with rafoxanide (Ranide, 7.5 mg/kg) at week 4 were not protected against subsequent homologous challenge with 250 metacercariae administered two weeks later. Reinfection resulted in more severe hepatic lesions and a higher percentage of flukes recovered as compared with primarily infected controls. However, the size of flukes originating from the second (challenge) infection was considerably reduced. The plasma enzyme activity of aspartate amino-transferase (AST), glutamate dehydrogenase (GD) and sorbitol de

Rubella-specific IgM in reinfection and risk to the fetus.

A case of reinfection with the wild rubella virus in the 8th gestational week is reported. The patient had preexisting hemagglutination inhibition antibodies of low titer following immunization with rubella vaccine. Reinfection was accompanied by clinical symptoms and the presence of rubella-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) of high titer. Following termination of pregnancy no rubella virus could be isolated from the fetal tissues and the fetal blood contained no specific IgM antibodies. These results should encourage the use of cordocentesis before decision on interruption of pregnancy.

Resistance of capuchin monkeys to reinfection with Schistosoma haematobium.

Capuchin monkeys were resistant to reinfection with Schistosoma haematobium one year after exposure to 500 cercariae, but worms in these monkeys continued to produce normal numbers of eggs. Monkeys were apparently completely refractory to reinfection when challenged 2-5 years after an initial exposure of 1000 to 2000 cercariae.

Fasciola hepatica: site of resistance to reinfection in cattle.

The effective site of resistance to reinfection of cattle with Fasciola hepatica was examined by recovery of challenge flukes from either the liver or body cavity. Calves infected 18 or 26 weeks previously with F. hepatica showed levels of resistance to reinfection of 56 and 94%, respectively, as assessed by recovery of flukes from the liver 15-16 weeks after challenge. Plasma glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.3; GLDH) enzyme activity estimations revealed only a marginal increase in these latter resistant calves compared with previously naive controls, indicating minimal liver damage as a resu

THE FATE OF TUBERCLE BACILLI IN THE ORGANS OF REINFECTED RABBITS.

In agreement with previous work (6) it was found that in normal rabbits after a primary inoculation of 0.01 mg. of human tubercle bacilli the organism shows a preliminary growth, which commences at once in all the organs, and reaches its height in the second week in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow; thereafter destruction begins, and is practically complete by the sixth week in the liver and bone marrow and less complete in the spleen. In the lung and kidney the largest number are isolated in the fourth week and thereafter there is a tendency to destruction, but to destruction far less compl

Dynamics of an SEIRV endemic model: effects of reinfection.

The threshold interpretation of R0 can fail to describe elimination in epidemic models with imperfect vaccination and reinfection. We study an SEIRV model in which vaccinated individuals remain partially susceptible and recovered individuals may be reinfected. The main novelty is an explicit threshold account of how reinfection can sustain endemic equilibria even when the vaccinated-population reproduction number satisfies R0<1. We derive the disease-free equilibrium, R0, and a sufficient condition for convergence to the disease-free state, showing why local disease-free stability and global e

Reinfection as a central constraint on tuberculosis vaccine development.

Tuberculosis (TB) vaccine development is hindered by the absence of validated correlates of protection, the low proportion of infected individuals who progress to disease, and the pervasive impact of reinfection in endemic settings. Although several candidates have advanced clinically, only M72/AS01E has demonstrated prevention of disease in adults. These limitations underscore the need to reassess both vaccine objectives and preclinical evaluation strategies. Epidemiological, immunological, and experimental evidence indicates that natural Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection can provide subst

Pulmonary Reinfection by Nocardia in an Immunocompetent Patient with Bronchiectasis.

Pulmonary reinfection by Nocardia has been rarely reported. We describe a case of pulmonary reinfection by Nocardia in an immunocompetent patient. An 82-year-old immunocompetent woman with bronchiectasis presented with exacerbation of cough. She had a history of pulmonary nocardiosis three years earlier. At that time, Nocardia species were cultured from the sputum and identified as N. cyriacigeorgica with 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. In the present episode, cultures of sputum and bronchial washing specimens grew N. beijingensis, which was identified with 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing
