Interpersonal attributional biases in hallucinatory-prone individuals.

Research in the area of auditory hallucinations has found that the occurrence of a hallucinatory experience is mediated, in part, by a bias towards making an external attribution for private events and experiences. The current study examined whether external attributional biases in hallucinators extend to their interpretation of social-cognitive interpersonal events. University students scoring high and low on the Launay-Slade Hallucination Scale (LSHS) were compared on self-report measures of locus-of-control (LOC) orientation, psychosis proneness and on the Phares [Journal of Abnormal and So

Social defeat stress switches the neural system mediating benzodiazepine conditioned motivation.

Benzodiazepines have been demonstrated to have a high abuse liability in persons suffering from anxiety but have demonstrated mixed abuse liability findings in preclinical models. We hypothesized that by modeling anxiety in a male C57BL/6 mouse model it would be possible to reveal a preference for benzodiazepines within this subpopulation through negative reinforcement. Using the Tube Test of Social Dominance and the Resident/Intruder Paradigm we investigated whether animals identified as dominant or submissive/defeated would differentially display a preference for midazolam (a short acting be

Contingency management for monosubstance use disorders: Systematic review and assessment of predicted versus obtained effects.

Contingency management (CM) is notably successful as a substance use disorder treatment and is most effective when targeting monosubstance use. Evidence suggests the effects of CM exceed predictions based on the value of the incentives delivered for monosubstance abstinence. In this systematic review, we examine common variations of CM interventions applied to a single substance to determine what factors may contribute to the larger effect. Our results show that CM produced moderate to large effect sizes when single drugs were targeted, with stable effects over time. We also found that interve

Interpersonal motivations in adolescent rumination.

In the decades since Nolen-Hoeksema's (1991) original work on response styles, research on rumination has flourished within psychological science. This literature often emphasizes the association of impaired problem-solving with rumination. Spikes in the prevalence of rumination coincide with the entry into adolescence, as youth become increasingly sensitive to social feedback and interpersonal relationships. This article introduces the idea that rumination represents a socially reinforced process in adolescent girls, who are particularly likely to engage in rumination and to find interpersona

A component analysis of evocative and reinforcing variables influencing challenging behavior.

It is well established that both isolated and synthesized reinforcement contingencies can influence the occurrence of challenging behavior, but currently no method exists for simultaneously evaluating these different causal variables. To achieve this, we conducted a component functional analysis (FA) to examine the evocative effects of sequentially introduced establishing operations and the reinforcement effects of sequentially delivered consequences. Outcomes were compared with a multielement FA that included assessments of isolated functions and, if indicated, synthesized functions. Results

The possible function of positive reinforcement in home-bound agoraphobia: a case study.

We conducted an uncontrolled case study (ABA design) based upon the hypothesis that the behavior of a home-bound agoraphobic is at least partially maintained by positive reinforcement in the home and that a disruption of access to home-based reinforcement would lead to an increased frequency of out-of-the-home behavior. Data concerning the types and amounts of behavior engaged in by the subject within the confines of her home and yard were gathered during a 30-day base line period. In addition, potential reinforcers in the home were identified by a survey schedule and by self-report of time al

A Behavioral Economic Measure of Sensitivity to Social Rewards in Children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder.

It has been suggested that deviations from typical patterns of social behavior in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may stem from a failure to experience social interactions as sufficiently rewarding (Chevallier et al., 2012). This study evaluated a behavioral economic measure of sensitivity to social rewards in 30 autistic children, 19 nonautistic children with developmental disabilities, and 19 neurotypical children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old. Participants worked for 30 s of access to social interactions with a novel adult or a leisure item in separate sessions. Eac

Impact of provoked stress on model-free and model-based reinforcement learning in individuals with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: From both clinical and theoretical perspectives, understanding the functionality of evaluative reinforcement learning mechanisms (Model-Free, MF, and Model-Based, MB) under provoked stress, particularly in Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), is crucial yet underexplored. This study aims to evaluate whether individuals with AUD who do not seek treatment show a greater tendency towards retrospective behaviors (MF) rather than prospective and deliberative simulations (MB) compared to controls. Additionally, it examines the impact of induced social stress on these decision-making processes. M

Reduced effects of social feedback on learning in Turner syndrome.

Turner syndrome is a genetic condition caused by a complete or partial loss of one of the X chromosomes. Previous studies indicate that Turner syndrome is associated with challenges in social skills, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. A possible mechanism is a reduced social influence on learning. The current study examined the impact of social and non-social feedback on learning in women with Turner syndrome (n = 35) and a sex- and age-matched control group (n = 37). Participants were instructed to earn points by repeatedly choosing between two stimuli with unequal proba

Countering the forgetting of novel health information with 'social boosting'.

The prevalence of misleading information, especially with respect to health care practices, poses a threat. While studies have shown the effectiveness of various intervention techniques in mitigating the adverse effects of low-quality or false information, the effectiveness of such interventions can decay. Here, we investigate the role of the detailed social structure within which the intervened individuals live, which provides opportunities for the individuals to discuss and internalize new knowledge. We evaluated this with respect to information about maternal and child health care, delivere

Transdiagnostic Predictors of Everyday Functioning: Examining the Relationships of Depression and Reinforcement Learning.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Impairments in function (ie, the ability to independently accomplish daily tasks) have been established in psychotic disorders. Identifying factors that contribute to these deficits is essential to developing effective interventions. The current study had several goals: examine potential differential relationships across domains of neurocognition, assess whether reinforcement learning is related to function, identify if predictors of function are transdiagnostic, determine whether depression and positive symptoms contribute to function, and to explore whether the mod

Employment-based abstinence reinforcement as a maintenance intervention for the treatment of cocaine dependence: post-intervention outcomes.

AIMS: Due to the chronicity of cocaine dependence, practical and effective maintenance interventions are needed to sustain long-term abstinence. We sought to assess the effects of long-term employment-based reinforcement of cocaine abstinence after discontinuation of the intervention. DESIGN: Participants who initiated sustained opiate and cocaine abstinence during a 6-month abstinence reinforcement and training program worked as data entry operators and were randomly assigned to a group that could work independently of drug use (control, n = 24), or an abstinence-contingent employment (n = 2

Context shapes action understanding in social interactions.

In social interactions, individuals anticipate what others are about to do next, enabling smooth social interactions and coexistence in daily life. Here, we examined how kinematic and contextual cues are weighted and integrated to predict an interactor's actions during dynamic, real-time competitive interactions. We analyzed 76 participants (38 dyads) freely playing 300 games of rock-paper-scissors each while tracking their kinematics using motion capture. Although movement kinematics consistently conveyed intention-related information, successful action selection depended primarily on how thi

Doubling down on dual systems: A cerebellum-amygdala route towards action- and outcome-based social and affective behavior.

The amygdala and cerebellum are both evolutionary preserved brain structures containing cortical as well as subcortical properties. For decades, the amygdala has been considered the fear-center of the brain, but recent advances have shown that the amygdala acts as a critical hub between cortical and subcortical systems and shapes social and affective behaviors beyond fear. Likewise, the cerebellum is a dedicated control unit that fine-tunes motor behavior to fit contextual requirements. There is however increasing evidence that the cerebellum strongly influences subcortical as well as cortical

Increased and biased deliberation in social anxiety.

A goal of computational psychiatry is to ground symptoms in basic mechanisms. Theory suggests that avoidance in anxiety disorders may reflect dysregulated mental simulation, a process for evaluating candidate actions. If so, these covert processes should have observable consequences: choices reflecting increased and biased deliberation. In two online general population samples, we examined how self-report symptoms of social anxiety disorder predict choices in a socially framed reinforcement learning task, the patent race, in which the pattern of choices reflects the content of deliberation. Asymmetric prefrontal representations for leader-follower dynamics.

Across species, cooperative behaviour is often organized by distinct social roles such as leaders and followers1, yet the neural mechanisms that support these emergent role dynamics remain unclear. Here we introduce a mouse paradigm that captures leader-follower dynamics during cooperation. In this paradigm, stable social roles emerge through reciprocal interaction and predict learning speed. Disrupting the activity of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), particularly in followers, impairs cooperation and induces complementary shifts in how animals weigh self- and partner-related cues during d

Development of MPFC function mediates shifts in self-protective behavior provoked by social feedback.

How do people protect themselves in response to negative social feedback from others? How does such a self-protective system develop and affect social decisions? Here, using a novel reciprocal artwork evaluation task, we demonstrate that youths show self-protective bias based on current negative social evaluation, whereas into early adulthood, individuals show self-protective bias based on accumulated evidence of negative social evaluation. While the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) mediates self-defensive behavior based on both current and accumulated feedback, the rostromedial prefront

Sensitivity of a fentanyl-vs.-social interaction choice procedure to environmental and pharmacological manipulations.

Recent studies have shown that social interaction can serve as an alternative reinforcer to opioid self-administration under a choice context in rats. However, additional parametric studies are needed to evaluate the sensitivity of opioid-vs.-social interaction procedures relative to more established opioid-vs.-food procedures. The current study evaluated the sensitivity of a novel fentanyl-vs.-social interaction choice procedure to environmental and pharmacological manipulations previously shown to affect fentanyl-vs.-food choice. Male and female rats (responder rats; n = 6/sex) were trained

Competitive spreading dynamics under sentinel intervention in higher-order community networks.

Misinformation spreading on social networks is jointly shaped by community structure, higher-order reinforcement, and intervention. We formulate a sentinel-triggered competitive susceptible-infected-susceptible-AB model on a simplicial complex with two equal-sized communities. Sentinels respond to local misinformation exposure by temporarily becoming truth sources, coupling local detection and corrective response with higher-order reinforcement and cross-community invasion. We derive a heterogeneous mean-field description and compare its predictions with Monte Carlo simulations. The results re
