Artificial Intelligence Techniques in Cardiac Neuromodulation: Mechanisms, Applications, and Pathways to Clinical Translation.

Cardiac neuromodulation includes various methods, such as vagus nerve stimulation, baroreflex activation therapy, renal denervation, and stellate ganglion intervention, and targets the autonomic imbalance contributing to the pathophysiology of many cardiovascular diseases. Despite promising mechanistic evidence, several landmark trials, including INOVATE-HF, NECTAR-HF, and SYMPLICITY HTN-3, did not meet their primary clinical outcomes, with substantial numbers of non-responders observed across therapies. Variation in patient response is attributed to several unresolved issues, including insuff

Disentangled representations for causal cognition.

Complex adaptive agents consistently achieve their goals by solving problems that seem to require an understanding of causal information, information pertaining to the causal relationships that exist among elements of combined agent-environment systems. Causal cognition studies and describes the main characteristics of causal learning and reasoning in human and non-human animals, offering a conceptual framework to discuss cognitive performances based on the level of apparent causal understanding of a task. Despite the use of formal intervention-based models of causality, including causal Bayes

A reinforcement learning and sequential sampling model constrained by gaze data.

Reinforcement learning models can be combined with sequential sampling models to fit choice-RT data. The combined models, known as RL-SSMs, explain a wide range of choice-RT patterns in repeated decision tasks. The present study shows how constraining an RL-SSM with eye gaze data can further enhance its predictive ability. Our model allows learned option values and relative gaze to jointly influence the accumulation of evidence prior to choice. We evaluate the model on data from two eye-tracking experiments (total N = 133) and test several variants of the model that assume different mechanisms

Reward Prediction Errors Drive Reinforcement Learning and Recognition Memory: Gender Differences in Methamphetamine Abusers.

OBJECTIVES: Methamphetamine (MA) abusers have impaired executive functioning with gender differences, which may be related to the reward prediction errors (RPEs) that drive reinforcement learning and recognition memory, as RPE signaling is impaired in MA abusers. We examined whether the driving effects of RPE on reinforcement learning and recognition memory are impaired in MA abusers and how they differ between women and men. METHODS: Eighty-two MA abusers (43 men, 39 women) from Zhejiang Compulsory Isolation Drug Rehabilitation Center and 86 non-users (45 men, 41 women) from Wenzhou medical

The Human Cerebellum Encodes Temporally Sensitive Reinforcement Learning Signals.

In addition to supervised motor learning, the cerebellum also supports nonmotor forms of learning, including reinforcement learning (RL). Recent studies in animal models have identified core RL signals related to reward processing, reward prediction, and prediction errors in specific regions in the cerebellar cortex. However, the constraints on these signals remain poorly understood, particularly in humans. Here, we investigated cerebellar RL signals in a computationally driven fMRI study. Human participants performed an RL task without low-level sensorimotor contingencies (N = 32; N female =

Evolutionary multi-agent reinforcement learning for crisis-aware demographic policy optimization.

Demographic systems face unprecedented challenges from simultaneous crises. Conventional statistical demography techniques and agent-based models often struggle to capture nonlinear inter-regional interactions during periods of severe socio-economic disruption. To address this, we propose MADDPG-EVO-DGM, a hybrid algorithm that integrates multi-agent deep reinforcement learning with evolutionary optimisation and meta-learning principles to model regional demographic processes under multiple crisis scenarios. Each region is treated as an autonomous agent learning to steer demographic policy lev

Small-object-sensitive deep reinforcement learning for fully automatic 3D vessel segmentation in medical images.

Pre-extracted lumen information of 3D vessel in medical images can effectively assist doctors in intraoperative navigation and postoperative evaluation, which has important clinical value. The main challenge faced by fully automatic 3D vessel segmentation comes from the imbalanced proportion of the vessels in medical image, which may lead to lost target. In this paper, a fully automatic 3D vessel segmentation method based on small-object-sensitive deep reinforcement learning, is presented. The region of target is firstly detected by the bounding box of a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) netwo

Adaptive social distancing under variant-specific transmission dynamics in a spatial SEIIR model with reinforcement learning.

Epidemic control is inherently dynamic because viral transmissibility and human behavior co-evolve and vary across spatial scales. Consequently, identical intervention strategies can yield divergent outcomes depending on regional connectivity, temporal changes in transmission, and the relative costs of control. Many existing analytical and policy frameworks, however, assume fixed transmission rates or rely on static thresholds, limiting their ability to guide effective interventions in heterogeneous and evolving epidemic landscapes. We present a mathematical framework that couples a time-varyi

A reinforcement learning algorithm to optimize resource utilization in combat casualty care.

Fluid resuscitation immediately following a hemorrhagic injury improves clinical outcome. However, future military conflicts are expected to result in mass-casualty incidents with limited availability of fluid-resuscitation resources. Here, we developed and assessed the performance of a reinforcement learning AI method that optimized clinical outcome and fluid allocation under constrained resources. We generated a large cohort of synthetic trauma casualties using a validated cardio-respiratory computational model, simulating vital-sign time-series data for realistic battlefield scenarios invol

Single-threshold-guided adaptive cancer therapy with partial-cycle treatment: A mechanistic and reinforcement learning analysis.

Adaptive cancer therapy seeks to modulate aggressive treatment to preserve drug-sensitive tumor cells that suppress resistant populations, but existing strategies often rely on frequent treatment decisions enabled by intensive surveillance, limiting clinical feasibility. Here, we propose a clinically motivated alternative that shortens the treatment window within a fixed and relatively long surveillance cycle, thereby avoiding the need for frequent monitoring. Based on this idea, we develop a mechanistic modeling framework for single-threshold-guided adaptive therapy with partial surveillance-

Reinforcement learning for chemotherapy scheduling in a stochastic tumor evolution model.

We present a Q-learning framework for optimizing chemotherapy dosing schedules in a stochastic finite-cell model of tumor evolution under drug-induced selection. The tumor consists of three competing subpopulations: a chemosensitive lineage, S, and two single-drug-resistant lineages, R_{1} and R_{2}, each resistant to one of two cytotoxic agents, C_{1} and C_{2}. Drug administration is formulated as a discrete action space in a finite-state Markov process, where the state is defined by the composition (S,R_{1},R_{2}) constrained by a fixed population size N. Tumor volume evolves according to a

A twin delayed deep deterministic-based control method for a full vehicle semi-active suspension system.

To improve the convergence issues of deep reinforcement learning in the control of vehicle semi-active suspension, and enhance the control effectiveness of the vehicle's semi-active suspension, a Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic-based control framework tailored for the high-dimensional nonlinear dynamics of the vehicle semi-active suspension model is proposed. Rather than merely applying standard deep reinforcement learning, this study introduces a domain-specific state-action mapping mechanism and a multi-objective reward function to physically constrain the neural network outputs and coordina

VLD-Net: Localization and Detection of the Vertebrae From X-Ray Images by Reinforcement Learning With Adaptive Exploration Mechanism and Spine Anatomy Information.

Accurate and efficient vertebrae localization and detection in X-ray images are essential for diagnosing and treating spinal diseases. However, most existing methods struggle with the complexity of spine X-ray images, yielding inaccurate results due to insufficient utilization of spinal anatomy information and neglect of individual vertebra characteristics. In this paper, we propose an innovative Vertebrae Localization and Detection Network (VLD-Net) to accurately assist physicians in diagnosing spine-related diseases from X-ray images. Our VLD-Net, for the first time, defines vertebrae locali

Predictors of return rate discrimination in slot machine play.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which accurate estimates of payback percentages and volatility combined with prior learning, enabled players to successfully discriminate between multi-line/multi-credit slot machines that provided differing rates of reinforcement. The aim was to determine if the capacity to discriminate structural characteristics of gaming machines influenced player choices in selecting 'favourite' slot machines. Slot machine gambling history, gambling beliefs and knowledge, impulsivity, illusions of control, and problem solving style were assessed in
