Fact or Fiction-Accelerometry Versus Self-Report in Adherence to Pediatric Concussion Protocols: Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury, is a growing public health concern, affecting approximately 1.2% of the population annually. Among children aged 1-17 years, concussion had the highest weighted prevalence compared to other injury types, highlighting the importance of addressing this issue among the youth population. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess adherence to Return to Activity (RTA) protocols among youth with concussion and to determine if better adherence affected time to recovery and the rate of reinjury. METHODS: Children and youth (N=139) aged 5-18 years wi

Sonography and MRI of latissimus dorsi strain injury in four elite athletes.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the MR and sonographic findings in latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle strain in athletes, and to review the most common injuries described in the literature, most of which are humeral avulsions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four injuries and two reinjuries of the myotendinous junction of the LD were followed from the day of injury until the return to play. Sonography (US) and MR imaging were performed in each case to confirm the diagnosis and to monitor the healing process. RESULTS: All cases had acute and isolated pain in the back of the shoulder wh

Hamstring injuries.

Hamstring injuries are a frequent injury in athletes. Proximal injuries are common, ranging from strain to complete tear. Strains are managed nonoperatively, with rest followed by progressive stretching and strengthening. Reinjury is a concern. High grade complete tears are better managed surgically, with reattachment to the injured tendon or ischial tuberosity. Distal hamstring injury is usually associated with other knee injuries, and isolated injury is rare.

Rehabilitation of the ankle.

The ankle is the most frequently injured major joint, and ankle sprain is the most frequent sports injury. If the injured ankle is managed correctly from the beginning, pain and swelling and the resultant disability will be kept to a minimum. Early return to participation predisposes the athlete to reinjury. Not only must strength and flexibility be restored, but the athlete must also be pain free and have regained his or her proprioceptive abilities.

Rehabilitation strategies for lateral ankle sprain do not reflect established mechanisms of re-injury: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: 1) determine the primary impairment addressed by each exercise included in exercise-based rehabilitation programs for patients with an acute ankle sprain; 2) Determine whether prescribed exercises incorporate complex tasks associated with ankle sprain injury mechanisms? METHODS: We searched databases CINAHL, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials, PEDro, Google Scholar for RCT's including patients with acute ankle sprains, managed through exercise-based rehabilitation. Risk of bias was assessed by the Risk of Bias 2 tool. Exercises were analysed based

Repeated injury promotes tracheobronchial tissue stem cell attrition.

Chronic lung disease has been attributed to stem cell aging and/or exhaustion. We investigated these mechanisms using mouse and human tracheobronchial tissue-specific stem cells (TSC). In mouse, chromatin labeling and flow cytometry demonstrated that naphthalene (NA) injury activated a subset of TSC. These activated TSC continued to proliferate after the epithelium was repaired and a clone study demonstrated that ~96% of activated TSC underwent terminal differentiation. Despite TSC attrition, epithelial repair after a second NA injury was normal. The second injury accelerated proliferation of

Ankle sprain and podoscopic footprint pattern in female volleyball players.

Ankle sprain (AS) is the most common sports injury that can be complicated by chronic joint instability. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between foot types and the ankle sprain events suffered during the sport career in female volleyball players. In this retrospective study, we randomly selected 98 female volleyball players competing in several divisions. Data were obtained from self-administered questionnaires in which the athlete noted data about volleyball practice, whether they had had ankle sprains and the number of these events. Plantar footprint was photographed by

Can Chronic Ankle Instability Be Prevented? Rethinking Management of Lateral Ankle Sprains.

OBJECTIVE: To pose the question, "Can chronic ankle instability be prevented?" The evaluation and treatment of chronic ankle instability is a significant challenge in athletic health care. The condition affects large numbers of athletes and is associated with reinjury and impaired performance. The management of acute injuries varies widely but in athletic training has traditionally focused on initial symptom management and rapid return to activity. A review of practice strategies and philosophies suggests that a more detailed evaluation of all joints affected by the injury, correction of hypom

An arthroscopic technique for anterior stabilization of the shoulder with a bioabsorbable tack.

Arthroscopically assisted repair of the anterior aspect of the labrum with use of a bioabsorbable tack was performed in fifty-two consecutive patients who had chronic anterior instability of the shoulder. The average age of the patients was twenty-eight years (range, sixteen to fifty years). The etiology of the instability was a traumatic injury in forty-nine patients; twenty-six of those injuries were sustained during participation in a contact sport. Fifty shoulders had a Bankart lesion. The patients were evaluated at an average of forty-two months (range, twenty-four to sixty months) after

Injuries in recreational adult fitness activities.

Volunteers (986) from fitness clubs and studios were recruited and followed for a 3-month period to document the injury consequences of adult recreational fitness participation. Participants were telephoned each week and their activities as well as any injuries that occurred were recorded. Of the 525 injuries and complaints reported during 60,629 hours of activity, 475 occurred as a result of sports participation for an overall rate of 7.83 per 1000 hours of participation. Seventy-six percent of these episodes caused the patient to alter or miss 1 or more activities, while 9.5% involved a phys

What Psychological Factors Affect Return to Sports After Shoulder Stabilization Surgery? A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Despite excellent functional outcomes after shoulder stabilization surgery, a substantial number of patients fail to return to sports (RTS) at the preinjury level. The psychological factors affecting RTS postsurgery have been underexplored. This scoping review aimed to identify and analyze potential psychological factors influencing the decision to RTS after shoulder stabilization surgery. DATA SOURCES: We reviewed the EBSCOhost/SPORTDiscus, PubMed/Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases for studies on patients with anterior glenohumeral instability who underwent st

Brachial artery thrombosis secondary to fixation screw pullout: Case report.

The vascular supply of the shoulder and forearm are principal derivates of the ipsilateral subclavian artery. The trajectory of this arterial supply predisposes it to concomitant injuries in the shoulder and clavicular fractures proximally and elbow dislocation distally. Distal bicep tendon tears often occur most commonly in middle-aged men due to trauma to the elbow, typically in weight-bearing situations [1]. To our knowledge, this is the first case of distal biceps tendon tear repair resulting in distal brachial artery injury from displaced hardware due to postoperative re-injury. We presen

Case report: Delayed subclavian vein injury secondary to clavicular malunion.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the clavicle are extremely common, representing 2.6-12% of all fractures and 35-44% of all shoulder girdle injuries; 69-82% of these fractures occur in the middle third of the clavicle. Vascular injuries relating to clavicle fracture are usually due to extreme force applied to the clavicle in an acute setting. No other reports of delayed subclavian vein laceration were found on literature search. OBJECTIVES: We present this case to increase awareness among emergency physicians of the potential delayed presentation of this rare condition. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old ma

Editorial Commentary: Confidence in the Knee After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: What Does It Really Mean?

Confidence is an important part of psychological recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, but what it means to have confidence in the knee may differ between athletes. Persistent lack of knee confidence is associated with poorer outcomes but may reflect a range of concerns, including reinjury, knee function, and sporting performance. Understanding what is driving a lack of knee confidence may help us identify how best to address it during rehabilitation.
