Predicting response to early reading intervention from verbal IQ, reading-related language abilities, attention ratings, and verbal IQ-word reading discrepancy: failure to validate discrepancy method.

Additional analyses of a previously published study addressed three questions about growth in word reading during early reading intervention: (1) How well do Verbal IQ, reading-related language abilities (phonological, rapid naming, and orthographic), and attention ratings predict reading growth? (2) How well do language deficits predict reading growth? and (3) How well does Verbal IQ-word reading discrepancy predict reading growth? Univariate analyses showed that Verbal IQ, phonological skills, orthographic skills, rapid automatized naming (RAN), and attention ratings predicted the response t

Approach to learning disability.

Learning disabilities (LD) is one of the important causes of poor academic performance in school going children. Learning disabilities are developmental disorders that usually manifest during the period of normal education. These disabilities create a significant gap between the true potential and day to day performance of an individual. Dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia denote the problem related to reading, writing and mathematics. Perinatal problems are certain neurological conditions, known to be associated with LD; however, genetic predisposition seems to be the most probable etiologic

Early intervention for preschoolers with developmental delays: the case for increased child collaboration.

In this article are analyzed the four following premises that explain why early intervention programs for preschool children with mental retardation (and other disabilities) have tended to adopt a teacher-directed "cultural transmission" or remedial model of education, whereas preschool programs for children without disabilities have generally preferred a more child-directed "developmental" model. (1) The purpose of early intervention is to accelerate and remediate, rather than support, cognitive growth. (2) Learning and accountability are maximized by specific instructional objectives written

Increasing the naming speed of poor readers: representations formed across repetitions.

In three experiments we examined the effect of repetition practice on the acquisition, retention, and generalization of children's skill in rapidly naming visually presented words. Experiment 1 showed that naming times decrease rapidly with practice. Retention of this newly acquired skill in rapid naming was a function of the degree of learning during training. "Overlearning" was necessary to prevent forgetting of the skill. Experiment 2 indicated that the rate at which the naming gains were acquired, and the amount of forgetting, was unrelated to the specific orthographic to phonological corr

Academic outcomes for students with learning disabilities in consultation and resource programs.

In this study, pretest and posttest achievement test data were collected for 67 children with learning disabilities assigned to one of four conditions: one period of resource room instruction per day; two periods of resource room instruction per day; consultative services combined with in-class instruction; and consultative services to classroom teachers. Analysis of pretest achievement measures indicated that students assigned to two periods of resource room per day differed significantly from the other groups and results from this group were analyzed separately. Students in the remaining thr

Improving First Time Board Pass Rates: A Successful Model for Physical Therapy Programs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Success on the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) is crucial for physical therapist (PT) students and their programs. Despite recognizing the importance of NPTE preparation, many programs struggle with pass rates and lack effective remediation strategies. METHOD MODEL DESCRIPTION AND EVALUATION: This article describes the iterative process of a DPT program in the Midwest aimed at improving student pass rates on the NPTE and remediating students of not passing the NPTE the first time. Interventions included the following: changing the program's culture, develo

Assessment and conceptual remediation of basic calculation skills in elementary school students.

The specific domain model for math disabilities postulates a core number deficit which presents a prime target for remedial interventions. This longitudinal study identified two groups of Grade 3 students based on their basic calculation abilities: students with persistent difficulties through Grade 4 (PD group) and students whose performance improved into the average range (IP group). Baseline data revealed a distinct cognitive profile for students in the PD group featuring predominant deficits in symbolic number processing. A conceptual intervention based on explicit teaching of basic arithm

Who is repeating anatomy? Trends in an undergraduate anatomy course.

Anatomy courses frequently serve as prerequisites or requirements for health sciences programs. Due to the challenging nature of anatomy, each semester there are students remediating the course (enrolled in the course for a second time), attempting to earn a grade competitive for admissions into a program of study. In this retrospective study, remediation rates and trends in an undergraduate anatomy course with over 400 students enrolled each semester at a large Midwestern university were identified. Demographic data was collected from spring 2004 to spring 2010, including students' age, ethni

Making sense of it: a brief programme to improve reading comprehension in adolescents with language impairments in main stream school.

BACKGROUND: Children with language impairment show academic outcomes that are consistently poorer than those of their typically developing peers. A contributor to this is difficulty with reading comprehension. Although these difficulties are reported to continue well into adolescence, this population is generally underserved with regard to therapy. The efficacy of interventions for reading comprehension is well established in the research literature, but whether the same effects are achievable within a reasonable time reflecting available resources in real-life circumstances is less clear. Multiple-component remediation for developmental reading disabilities: IQ, socioeconomic status, and race as factors in remedial outcome.

Results from a controlled evaluation of remedial reading interventions are reported: 279 young disabled readers were randomly assigned to a program according to a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design (IQ, socioeconomic status [SES], and race). The effectiveness of two multiple-component intervention programs for children with reading disabilities (PHAB + RAVE-O; PHAB + WIST) was evaluated against alternate (CSS, MATH) and phonological control programs. Interventions were taught an hour daily for 70 days on a 1:4 ratio at three different sites. Multiple-component programs showed significant improvements

The influence of color on transient system activity: implications for dyslexia research.

Metacontrast and apparent motion experiments designed to utilize transient system resources were adopted to investigate the proposal that transient system activity is differentially influenced by different colored stimuli. The results generally showed no effect of color on transient system activity in either adults or children. However, the predicted pattern of results was demonstrated when contrast rather than color was manipulated in a final metacontrast experiment. We discuss the tenuousness of the proposal that color differentially influences transient activity, exploring its physiological

Achievement in reading, verbal language, listening comprehension and locus of control of adult illiterates in a volunteer tutorial project.

This study examined the effectiveness of specific psychoeducational tutoring methods on achievement in reading, verbal language, listening comprehension, and locus of control. Subjects were 76 youths and adults reading below fifth grade who volunteered to participate in an adult tutorial project. After the assessment of entry level achievement, subjects were tutored for 34 hr. by trained volunteers. Comparison of pretest and posttest scores with a control group that received no tutoring indicated that subjects made significant improvement in both general reading and discrete reading subskills.

Improvements in spelling after QEEG-based neurofeedback in dyslexia: a randomized controlled treatment study.

Phonological theories of dyslexia assume a specific deficit in representation, storage and recall of phonemes. Various brain imaging techniques, including qEEG, point to the importance of a range of areas, predominantly the left hemispheric temporal areas. This study attempted to reduce reading and spelling deficits in children who are dyslexic by means of neurofeedback training based on neurophysiological differences between the participants and gender and age matched controls. Nineteen children were randomized into an experimental group receiving qEEG based neurofeedback (n = 10) and a contr

Neuropsychological stability and prognosis of subgroups of children with learning disabilities.

A sample of 74 Finnish children with mild learning disabilities (LD) and 57 controls was followed from the third grade (Study 1) to the sixth grade (Study 2). In the initial study, the sample had been grouped into five valid subgroups (Normal, General Language, Visuo-Motor, General Deficiency, Naming) utilizing a cluster analysis. In both studies a battery of 12 neuropsychological, reading, and writing tests was administered, and teacher ratings were obtained. The results indicated that the general neuropsychological profiles of the subgroups were maintained, but some changes, consistent with

Preventing the Development of Dyslexia: A Reply to Mather.

Because reading/writing is a fundamental tool for children's development, the main failure in its learning-developmental dyslexia-gives rise to many attempts to remediate. A recent remedy proposed by Mather (2022), published in Perceptual and Motor Skills [129(3), p. 468], is impressive through its radical nature and the extent of its consequences. It consists of delaying the teaching of writing to the age of 7-8 years, whereas, at present, most children in Western or comparable cultures learn to write even before compulsory school (generally at age six). In this article, I present a set of ar

SoC-TEQ: A teaching-embedded framework to quantify skin of color exposure and quality in dermatology residency training.

What is the educational challenge? Efforts to improve skin-of-color (SoC) education in dermatology have increased, yet standardized methods to evaluate how this content is taught in routine didactic and clinical settings remain limited. What is the proposed solution? We propose the SoC-TEQ Framework (Skin of Color - Teaching Exposure & Quality), a resident-led, low-cost, and reproducible model to support the evaluation and improvement of SoC education in dermatology residency training. The framework draws on the Kirkpatrick model and principles of situated learning. It assesses three domains: T
